Renn recognized the man.
He was the same young man who had been standing beside Victor when Renn negotiated the cleanup job with the Whale Gang.
His position within the gang was clearly not low.
“So it really was the Whale Gang.”
The young man hurriedly denied it.
“This was my idea alone. It had nothing to do with our boss.”
Renn looked at him calmly.
“You say it had nothing to do with him, so that makes it true?”
“Even if Victor didn’t order this personally, he definitely knew about it. And even if he truly didn’t know, that would still be his failure as the leader.”
“Either way, I’m putting this debt on Victor’s head.”
Renn raised his handgun and pressed the barrel against the young man’s forehead.
“Now that I know who’s behind this, there’s no reason to keep you alive.”
“Spare me!”
Fear and regret flashed through the young man’s eyes.
But it was already too late.
Renn pulled the trigger.
“Bang!”
A bloody hole appeared between the young man’s brows.
Renn tossed his corpse into the Disassembler as well.
Soon afterward, he saw three figures rapidly approaching.
“Machi. Uvogin. Nobunaga.”
“Renn, are you okay?”
Machi asked worriedly.
“I’m fine.”
Renn shook his head.
“They fired at me to lure me out, then set an ambush here. But I’ve already dealt with all of them.”
“The mastermind was Victor.”
“He probably didn’t want to pay us.”
Renn didn’t believe for a second that the young man had acted entirely on his own and that Victor had nothing to do with it.
There had been no conflict of interest between Renn and that young man.
Meteor City was chaotic.
But no one here wasted effort doing pointless things that brought them no benefit.
Precisely because life here was so harsh, everyone acted with a purpose.
Fighting for no reason accomplished nothing except wasting time and energy.
And those were things the people at the bottom of Meteor City couldn’t afford to waste.
“Captain, what are we going to do now?”
Renn looked toward the residential district.
“If he doesn’t want to give us our money, then we’ll take it ourselves.”
“And since Victor tried to kill me, it would be unreasonable for me not to kill him in return.”
Renn stepped forward.
“We’re going to the Whale Gang.”
“We’ll collect what we’re owed and kill Victor.”
Uvogin grinned.
“So we finally get to cut loose?”
Renn glanced at him.
At heart, Uvogin was a violent man.
But as long as that violence was directed at the right targets, Renn didn’t see a problem with it.
“Captain, I’m still missing a weapon.”
Nobunaga spoke with a trace of resentment.
His sword had, after all, been disassembled by Renn.
Renn glanced at him.
“Find any sword you can and make do with it for now.”
“Once we reach the Whale Gang, you can take the best sword among the spoils.”
“I’ll deduct its value from my share.”
Nobunaga’s expression brightened.
“Really?”
“Of course.”
Renn nodded.
“Uvogin, you’re the vanguard.”
“Nobunaga, guard the rear.”
“Machi, stay in the middle and support either Uvogin or Nobunaga whenever necessary.”
“I’ll focus entirely on offense.”
With the team’s current composition, Uvogin was an Enhancer, Nobunaga was also an Enhancer, and Machi had yet to develop her own signature ability.
That meant it wouldn’t be suitable for Renn to use either the Fighter or the Slayer.
Using the Gunner would best compensate for what the team currently lacked.
“Let’s go!”
The four of them headed straight toward Victor’s location in the residential district.
Victor suddenly woke with a start.
“I wonder how their plan is going.”
“Just how strong is that Renn?”
“It would be best if I could save those three hundred thousand Jenny.”
“And even if Renn is fairly strong, those seven should still be able to retreat safely.”
“Four of them are Nen users.”
“No matter how strong Renn is, there’s no way he could pose a serious threat to all of them.” Get faster updates on g.com.
“No matter how this turns out, I come out ahead.”
“But why do I have such a bad feeling?”
Victor glanced toward the window.
Suddenly—
“Boom!”
A tremendous crash rang out.
The courtyard wall exploded inward, leaving a massive breach.
Uvogin appeared in the opening.
“Victor! Get out here and die!”
Only then did the members of the Whale Gang react.
“Enemy attack!”
Dozens of figures rushed out one after another.
Uvogin threw a punch at the nearest man.
The man was instantly sent flying backward, crashing into a group behind him and knocking them all down.
Nobunaga tightened his grip on the sword in his hand.
A figure lunged toward him.
Nobunaga swung once.
“Shhk!”
The blade swept across the man’s throat.
Blood sprayed through the air.
Renn raised his gun and pulled the trigger.
In an instant, several members of the Whale Gang fell.
Victor emerged from inside, his expression dark.
“Renn, what do you think you’re doing?”
Renn looked at Victor.
“Victor, shouldn’t I be asking you that?”
“We had barely finished agreeing on our deal before you became so impatient that you sent people to assassinate me.”
“Assassinate you? I did no such thing.”
Victor’s heart sank.
Not because Renn had mentioned the assassination.
But because Renn had survived it.
And none of Victor’s men had returned.
That could only mean one thing.
Renn was far stronger than Victor had estimated.
“Renn, this must be a misunderstanding!”
