Gu Huaijin suddenly recalled that at the scene of Lin Su-su’s car crash, he seemed to have received a call from Xia Xing.

Back then, the situation had been urgent.

He had no time to answer and hung up.Full novel: Husband and Son Chose His White Moonlight, So I’m Getting a Divorce — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

With that thought, Gu Huaijin dialled her number back.

Beep… Beep… Beep…

The phone rang for a long time with no one picking up.

It automatically cut off, and Gu Huaijin’s frown deepened.

He tried calling several more times, yet there was still no reply.

Was she deliberately snubbing him because he had rejected her call earlier that day?

Zhuang Yi once said a woman should not be spoiled too much.

It seemed he had been far too lenient with her in the past, which allowed her to keep giving him the cold shoulder again and again.

…

Inside the hospital ward, the phone on the bedside table buzzed nonstop, but Xia Xing had long fallen into deep sleep.

She only saw the missed calls when she woke up the next morning.

A mocking tug pulled at the corner of her lips.

With a cold expression, she set the phone back on the bedside.

Half an hour later, someone knocked on the ward door.

Several traffic police officers in uniform arrived to investigate the accident.

Xia Xing recounted what had happened truthfully.

“When I was turning, the other car suddenly darted out without slowing down at all.”

The officer jotted down her statement and asked, “Miss Xia, are you certain it was the other driver who hit you, rather than you hitting her?”

A subtle sense of unease crept over Xia Xing from their words.

She asked, “Why?

Does the other party deny hitting me?”

Accidents like this required liability confirmation.

The officer did not hide the truth.

“The stretch of road where it happened is remote with no surveillance cameras, so liability cannot be determined for now.

We need statements from both parties first.”

Xia Xing asked, “Is she staying in this same hospital?”

“Yes.

This is the closest hospital to the crash site.” The officer paused and continued, “Right now, that driver insists you crashed into her.

We are actively searching for witnesses and other evidence.

We will notify you once we have results.”

“Thank you for your trouble,” Xia Xing replied politely.

The traffic police left soon after.

Watching their retreating figures, Xia Xing’s eyes darkened.

She refused to believe such a coincidence could happen.

Of all people, she had crashed into Lin Su-su.

Was Lin Su-su forcing Gu Huaijin to choose between them?

…

“The traffic police said the other party refuses to admit fault and claims Miss Lin hit her instead.

That area is too remote and lacks surveillance footage.

If we wait for their investigation, it may take…”

Lin Su-su, lying in the hospital bed beside them, looked utterly terrified upon hearing this.

“That woman charged out like she’d lost her mind, with no attempt to brake.

She was either drunk or trying to kill me on purpose…”

As she spoke, she stared at her plastered hand, tears welling in her eyes.

“I had planned to hold a concert in my final days.

Now I don’t know if my hand will ever recover…”

Gu Huaijin said calmly, “I have secured a top medical team for you.

Focus on recovering.

I will handle this matter.”

Lin Su-su shook her head, her eyes glistening with tears.

“She must have pulled strings to delete the surveillance footage… leaving us with no proof at all.

I fear this will just get swept under the rug in the end.”

“Do not worry.

I won’t let you suffer any injustice.”

Lin Su-su broke into a teary smile.

She knew Gu Huaijin did not make promises lightly, and once he gave his word, he would keep it.

A few minutes later, Qin Huo stood outside another ward.

He had found out the driver who collided with Lin Su-su was staying right here.

Gu Huaijin did not need to handle such matters in person.

Qin Huo knocked and stepped inside the ward.

Gu Huaijin remained in the corridor and dialled Xia Xing’s number once more.

Just like yesterday, there was still no answer.

A strange surge of irritation rose inside Gu Huaijin.

He was about to dial again when Qin Huo walked out with a strange look on his face.

Gu Huaijin paused.

“Why are you out so soon?

Does she still refuse to admit it?”

Qin Huo shot him a cautious glance, hesitant to speak.

After a long moment, he managed to get the words out.

“Mr.

Gu… you’d better see for yourself.”

Qin Huo was an outstanding assistant; a matter like this would never stump him.

If Qin Huo asked him to go in person, it must be serious.

Gu Huaijin shot him a look and pushed open the ward door.

He froze the instant he saw the woman propped up in the hospital bed.

“Xia Xing, what are you doing here?”

Xia Xing had already learned from Qin Huo why Gu Huaijin had come.

She was not surprised at all by his arrival.

Leaning against the bed, her face was faintly pale, with scabbed wounds on her forehead.

She looked at him and said flatly, “Aren’t you asking questions you already know the answer to, Mr. You are reading on g.com, the official source.

Gu?

You should know better than me why you’ve come.”

Gu Huaijin’s gaze sharpened.

“The person who crashed into Su-su… was you?”

Xia Xing replied lightly, “Yes.”

In that instant, everything clicked for Gu Huaijin.

His dark eyes flickered like wavering candle flames.

He stared at her with complicated emotions.

“Were you still in the car when you called me yesterday?”

Xia Xing’s tone was gentle, void of any discernible feeling.

“When you pulled Miss Lin out of the wreck, my foot was trapped.

I called you, hoping you would get me out too.”

But he had hung up on her.

Even one quick glance in her direction would have let him see her.

Yet he had not.

Not a single glance.

His whole world had only been Lin Su-su, blind to everyone else.

Disappointed?

She had long abandoned all expectations of him, so disappointment was hardly the right word.

But the feeling of being abandoned at the brink of death was unspeakably awful.

She never wanted to experience it again for the rest of her life.

“I’m sorry.” Gu Huaijin’s voice was low.

“I didn’t know you were there.”

Xia Xing smiled faintly.

“Exactly.

You had no idea I was there.

You thought my call was about something trivial and unimportant.

That’s why you could hang up on me without hesitation.

Because…”

She met his eyes, speaking each word slowly and distinctly.

“I was never someone that mattered much in your heart.”

At that moment, any explanation sounded nothing but an excuse.

Gu Huaijin fell silent and said nothing.

Xia Xing closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them again, her gaze was clear, stripped of all emotion.

“Mr.

Gu, just state whatever business brings you here.”

Gu Huaijin remembered why he had come.

“Was it you… who hit Su-su?”
