The Department of Ability Registration was a monument to order.

Located in the upper echelons of the capital, its halls were pristine, quiet, and governed by absolute certainties.

Every Awakened human was categorized, their potential mathematically mapped from F to SS.Full novel: I Awakened the Weakest Ability, But My Evolution Has No Limits — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Analyst Thorne liked certainties.

That was why the blinking red anomaly on his terminal was making his stomach turn.

He tapped his screen, bringing up the file again.

[NAME: Morgan, Kael] [RANK: F] [ABILITY: Adaptation] [STATUS: Presumed Deceased – Unverified]

It wasn’t the F-rank that bothered Thorne.

It was the data field right beneath it.

Every ability in recorded history had a “Maximum Evolution Ceiling”—a hard, biological cap beyond which the ability could no longer grow.

Even the revered S-Ranks had ceilings.

Kael Morgan’s ceiling field wasn’t empty, nor was it an error.

It was a perfect, mathematical void.

Thorne swallowed hard, his finger hovering over the panic button.

In the history of the department, a blank ceiling meant only one thing: an unquantifiable variable.

And in a society built entirely on predictable power structures, an unquantifiable variable was synonymous with a threat to national security.

He didn’t file a standard report.

He tagged the file with a legacy emergency code—a protocol so old it was practically forgotten, designed to route any file marked ‘Unquantifiable Variable’ past the entire chain of command.

It was a career-ending move if he was wrong.

His terminal confirmed transmission.

Ten minutes later, the quiet alarm was raised.

Deep in the city’s maintenance sectors, Kael Morgan drew his first clear breath.

The air, thick with rot and stray mana, scraped his lungs, but it was the sharp scent of rust and stagnant water that held his focus.

He could feel the grit under his fingertips, the damp chill of the wall at his back.

The ache in his ribs was a distant hum, a fact he observed rather than felt.

His body was a machine he was learning to operate again, and every nerve was firing with startling clarity.

Pain Resistance had done more than numb him; it had made him present.

He wiped a smear of black blood from his cheek, looking down at the carcass at his feet.

It was a Scavenger Hound—a low-level, mutated stray that had ambushed him from the shadows of a drainage pipe.

Ten minutes ago, an F-rank orphan would have been torn to shreds.

But Kael hadn’t panicked.

When the hound’s teeth had sunk into his forearm, the system had isolated the pain, allowing Kael to coldly drive a rusted iron pipe through the beast’s skull.

Now, a faint, wispy current of grey mana drifted from the hound’s corpse, sinking into Kael’s skin.

[Target defeated.

Trace mana absorbed.] [Analyzing System Pathways…]

Three distinct, locked conceptual trees faintly materialized in his peripheral vision:

Physical Evolution: [Locked – Insufficient Mana]

Skill Evolution: [Locked – Insufficient Mana]

Concept Evolution: [Locked – Insufficient Mana]

He couldn’t access them yet, but the sensation of the mana absorbing into his cells was intoxicating.

He was growing.

Not by arbitrary societal standards, but through pure, violent survival.

A sudden mechanical hum broke his concentration.

Kael scavenged the drone’s wreckage, pulling a data chip from its casing.

He found a discarded info-terminal half-sunk in the muck nearby and jammed the chip in.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, the screen flickered to life with a single, pristine message against a corrupted background:

[Admission Granted: Kael Morgan.

Provisional Social Mobility Pilot Program.

Report to sorting grounds.

Effective immediately.]

Kael stared at the screen, a bewildered laugh escaping his lips.

He was dead to the registry and hunted by a debt-master, yet here was a golden ticket.

A system glitch, a clerical error—he didn’t care what it was.

He was in.

High above the slums, Director Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, looking out over the glittering capital.

“Is it done?” Sterling asked, not turning around.

“Yes, Director,” the aide replied nervously.

“The Academy Principal has been instructed to admit the boy under a research exemption.

They will keep him contained and observed.

But…

sir, if he truly has no ceiling—if he is the anomaly the ancient texts warned about, wouldn’t a controlled termination be cleaner than an open-ended study with no guaranteed outcome?”

Sterling finally turned, his eyes cold.

“Because if you try to execute something that has no limit on its adaptation, you might just trigger the exact evolution that destroys us all.

Keep him in a cage he thinks is a reward.”

The Director walked over to his desk, picking up the physical file for Kael Morgan.

He pressed a heavy red stamp onto the cover.

MONITOR.

PRIORITY: HIGH.
