The admission chip burned like a brand in Kael’s pocket.

It was his ticket out, but he wasn’t naive enough to think he could just walk through the gilded gates of the Hero Academy as he was.

Provisional status or not, the Academy was a meat grinder designed for C-ranks and above.Full novel: I Awakened the Weakest Ability, But My Evolution Has No Limits — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

As a battered F-rank, he wouldn’t survive the first day of practicals.

He needed mana.

He needed to force another evolution.

Kael pushed deeper into the quarantine zone, leaving the city’s artificial lights for the bioluminescent rot of the deep underground.

Down here, you didn’t find mutated sewer rats.

You found the real monsters, the things that had seeped through the dimensional rifts a century ago and made the city’s guts their own.

He didn’t have to search for long.

A low, vibrating growl echoed through a collapsed transit tunnel.

A Spine-Stalker detached itself from the shadows, its panther-sized form unfolding with an unnatural fluidity.

It had no skin, only whipcord muscle wrapped around a frame of jagged, calcified bone-plates.

It was all lethal anatomy, and it was looking right at him.

Kael’s knuckles whitened on the rusted rebar he’d salvaged.

It felt impossibly small.

The Stalker lunged.

It was impossibly fast.

Kael threw himself sideways, but his F-rank body couldn’t clear the attack.

The creature’s bladed tail whipped around, slicing a gash across his thigh deep enough to show bone.

He saw the wound, felt the hot blood spill down his leg, and braced for an agony that never came.

The pain was there, but it was a distant thing—a dull, manageable pressure.

His body registered the damage, but his mind was free to act.

He hit the ground hard, the impact jarring his teeth, but the fall saved him.

The monster shot past, and in that split second, Kael scrambled, shoving the rebar out with both hands.

He didn’t aim.

He just pushed.

The beast turned, pouncing, and impaled itself, its own momentum driving the rusted iron deep into the soft tissue of its underbelly.

Kael screamed, a raw sound of terror and effort, using the tunnel wall as leverage to hold the thrashing creature in place.

The Stalker thrashed wildly, its claws tearing into Kael’s shoulders, but Kael held the rebar firm, his eyes locked onto the beast’s frantic, dying gaze.

He simply refused to let go.

He let the monster bleed out around the iron.

When the creature finally went limp, Kael collapsed backward, chest heaving.

Instantly, a rich, vibrant surge of blue mana erupted from the corpse, rushing into Kael’s chest.

It was a warm, consuming rush—nothing like the weak, gray trace of the scavenger hound.

It flooded his veins, repairing the shallow claw marks on his shoulders and the gash on his thigh.

[Target Defeated: Spine-Stalker (Tier-1).] [Substantial Mana Absorbed.

Threshold Met.] [Analyzing Host Status…]

The translucent blue interface expanded, projecting three distinct, glowing pathways in the dark tunnel.

[First Evolution Choice Available.

Select your path:]

[Option A: Stronger Body (Physical Evolution)] Effect: Dramatically increases muscular density, bone tensile strength, and raw kinetic output.

[Option B: Faster Brain (Skill Evolution)] Effect: Accelerates neural pathways.

Enhances cognitive processing speed, spatial awareness, and strategic calculation.

[Option C: Enhanced Senses (Physical/Skill Hybrid)] Effect: Heightens optical, auditory, and olfactory receptors beyond human limits.

Grants minor precognitive instinct.

Kael sat in the damp rubble, the blue light washing over his bruised face.

He studied the text carefully.

Option A was the obvious choice.

In a world that worshipped raw power, taking Stronger Body would give him the immediate physical strength to answer the debt-master’s beating or Noah’s casual dismissal on their own terms.

It would make him a standard, respectable Awakened.

But Kael didn’t want to be standard.

He thought about the elites in their high-backed chairs, watching the ceremony.

He thought about the power they held—not just in their bodies, but in the system they controlled.

He couldn’t beat them at their own game; they’d had a century to perfect it.

But if he could play a different game entirely?

If he could see the fight three moves ahead while they were still winding up for the first punch?

In a world built on sheer strength, the most dangerous thing he could become was the one who had already calculated the outcome before the first fist was thrown.

“Option B,” Kael rasped, his voice echoing in the tunnel.

“Faster Brain.”

[Selection Confirmed: Faster Brain.] [Commencing Neural Evolution.]

The change wasn’t agonizing like his physical healing had been, but it was intensely disorienting.

A sharp, needle-like pressure pierced the center of his forehead.

For three seconds, his vision white-washed.

A cold, electric current cascaded through his brain, rewiring synapses, expanding his cognitive capacity, and stripping away the fog of exhaustion.

When Kael opened his eyes, the dripping from the ceiling was no longer just a sound.

It was a pattern.

He saw the bead of water form, swell, and release, and his mind mapped its trajectory before it even hit the ground.

He glanced at the dead Stalker and the corpse resolved into a diagram of anatomical flaws and structural weaknesses.

The world hadn’t slowed down; his perception had accelerated to fill the space between moments.

The system chimed, the text turning a regal gold.

[First Human Evolution Achieved.]

Kael slowly stood up.

The minor pain in his limbs was easily categorized and dismissed by his newly accelerated mind.

Adaptation, he realized with cold clarity, wasn’t just a survival mechanism.

It was a philosophy.

He pulled the Academy admission chip from his pocket.

Before, it was just a piece of technology.

Now, his mind traced the faint, almost invisible seams in its casing, mapping the internal circuitry from the subtle heat variations on its surface.

He saw not code, but patterns—and half a dozen ways those patterns could be broken.

Kael turned his back on the dark tunnels and began the long walk toward the upper city.

It was time to see what a broken system did when faced with a variable it couldn’t solve.
