The first thing Arjun Mehra noticed that morning was that Bruno had stolen his lunch.
Again.
“Bruno!”
Arjun stood outside the giant panda enclosure, one hand gripping the empty lunch container and the other pressed against his forehead as if trying to suppress a migraine.
The culprit sat ten meters away on a large artificial rock, holding Arjun’s homemade paneer sandwich with both paws.
The panda stared back with complete innocence before taking another exaggerated bite.
Crunch.
“That’s my lunch.”
Crunch.
“I spent thirty minutes making that.”
Crunch.
“You don’t even like paneer.”
Bruno paused, looked at the sandwich, and then took an even bigger bite.
Arjun sighed.
There were moments in life when a person needed to accept defeat with dignity.
This was one of them.
Around him, Green Paradise Zoo was slowly waking up.
The morning sun stretched over the city skyline beyond the zoo walls, painting the glass skyscrapers gold.
Children’s laughter echoed from the entrance gate as the first visitors trickled inside.
Somewhere nearby, peacocks screamed like they had just witnessed a murder.
Just another ordinary Tuesday.
Unfortunately, ordinary Tuesdays were Arjun’s least favorite kind.
At twenty-four years old, he had imagined his life would look very different.
Perhaps he would have become a wildlife photographer.
Maybe an explorer.
Maybe even a famous documentary host traveling across the world.
Instead, he was arguing with a panda over a stolen sandwich while earning just enough money to survive.
“Fine,” he muttered.
“Enjoy your victory.”
Bruno blinked.
Then, as if to establish dominance, the panda slowly turned around and sat on Arjun’s backpack.
“Seriously?”
The panda ignored him.
“Of course.”
Arjun checked his watch.
7:45 AM.
Which meant he had exactly fifteen minutes before Director Wang arrived and found out that Bruno had once again escaped the feeding schedule, stolen employee property, and occupied a restricted maintenance area.
Again.
“Okay,” Arjun said, rolling up his sleeves.
“Let’s do this the easy way.”
He grabbed a fresh bundle of bamboo from the nearby cart and held it up.
Bruno’s ears twitched.
“You want this?”
The panda’s black eyes locked onto the bamboo.
“Come on.”
Bruno hesitated.
Arjun waved the bamboo.
The panda abandoned the backpack without a second thought.
“Excellent.
You’re predictable.”
As Arjun bent down to retrieve his bag, something strange happened.
A sharp pain exploded inside his head.
His vision blurred.
The world tilted.
He stumbled backward.
“What the—”
The air around him seemed to freeze.
The sounds of the zoo disappeared.
The screaming peacocks.
The distant conversations.
Even the rustling leaves.
Everything vanished.
For one terrifying moment, there was only silence.
Then—
A mechanical voice echoed inside his mind.
[WARNING.]
Arjun froze.
“What?”
[SYSTEM CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.]
A bright blue screen suddenly materialized in front of his eyes.
No.
Not in front of him.
Inside his vision.
He blinked.
The screen remained.
HEAVENLY DEMON SUPPRESSION SYSTEM V99.8
STATUS: CRITICAL ERROR DETECTED
EMERGENCY HOST ASSIGNMENT COMPLETE
WELCOME, HOST.
Arjun stared.
Then he looked around.
Then back at the screen.
“Okay.”
He nodded slowly.
“I finally snapped.”
The screen flickered.
BEGINNING WORLD ANALYSIS…
“What?”
SCANNING ENVIRONMENT…
ANALYZING THREAT LEVEL…
ASSESSING HOST SURVIVAL PROBABILITY…
“Excuse me?”
The blue screen flashed red.
A siren suddenly blared inside his head.
WARNING!
WARNING!
WARNING!
HOST HAS BEEN DEPLOYED INTO A CLASS-Ω DEATH WORLD!
Arjun blinked.
“…What?”
WORLD IDENTIFIED:
THE NINE HEAVENS PRIMORDIAL DEMON REALM
A long silence followed.
A very long silence.
Then Arjun laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
But because the alternative was having a panic attack.
“Hahaha.”
He looked around.
There was Bruno.
There were trees.
There was a maintenance cart with one broken wheel.
And there was a pigeon trying to fight its own reflection.
“This?” he asked.
“This is the Nine Heavens whatever?”
The system did not respond.
Instead, new messages appeared.
BEGINNING THREAT SCAN.
The screen suddenly rotated.
A red targeting reticle locked onto Bruno.
The panda, who had finished eating the sandwich, stared back blankly.
The system’s warning sirens became deafening.
THREAT DETECTED!
THREAT DETECTED!
THREAT DETECTED!
Arjun nearly jumped out of his skin.
“What now?”

A piece of bamboo landed on his own face.
The panda stared at it in confusion.
Arjun slowly raised a finger.
“That’s Bruno.”

Arjun blinked.
He blinked again.
Then he looked at Bruno.
The panda had somehow managed to sit upside down and was attempting to eat a leaf.
“…You’re telling me,” Arjun said carefully, “that I have to survive an hour near the panda.”
CORRECT.
“The panda that stole my lunch.”
THE HEAVENLY BEAR EMPEROR IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
“The panda who once got stuck inside a tire.”
HOST SHOULD PREPARE FOR DEATH.
Arjun stared at the sky.
Perhaps he had died already.
That would explain a lot.
A voice suddenly called out.
“Arjun!”
He turned.
A middle-aged man wearing a manager’s uniform hurried toward him.
Director Wang.
The man looked exhausted despite it not even being eight in the morning.
“Why is Bruno outside the enclosure again?” Director Wang shouted.
Before Arjun could answer, the system screamed.
WARNING!

A red box appeared over Director Wang’s head.

Director Wang stopped in front of him.
“Are you listening to me?”
Arjun’s lips trembled.
Apparently, according to the voice in his head, he was currently trapped between a world-destroying bear demon and a hidden immortal cultivator.
“Arjun!”
“Yes, sir!”
“Why are you sweating?”
Because my hallucinations think you’re going to kill me.
“Exercise,” Arjun replied.
Director Wang stared at him.
Bruno stared at him.
The system stared at him.
Somewhere in the distance, another peacock screamed.
Then, for reasons Arjun would never understand, Director Wang sighed.
“Just clean the enclosure before the inspectors arrive.”
He turned and walked away.
The system immediately exploded with notifications.

Then everything returned to normal.
Arjun stood frozen.
Slowly, he looked down at his hands.
He could feel it.
The power.
The impossible, terrifying, completely real power.
His face turned pale.
He slowly looked toward Bruno.
Bruno waved a piece of bamboo at him.
The system spoke once more.
CONGRATULATIONS, HOST.
YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TAKEN THE FIRST STEP TOWARD SURVIVING THE NINE HEAVENS DEMON REALM.
For the first time that morning, Arjun realized he had a very serious problem.
Because either the system was insane.
Or the world was.
