The floor dissolved into a roaring hell of shattering concrete and twisted rebar.

Mari hit the deck hard. The impact slammed the oxygen right out of her lungs, sending white-hot spikes through her ribs. Overhead, the hospital was tearing itself apart—pipes ruptured, spraying scalding, blinding steam into the air while tons of fucking ceiling debris rained down around them.

She rolled instantly, her assassin instincts overriding the pain.

Left arm intact. Right arm intact. Both legs functional. Knife drawing blood from her own tight grip.

"Cassian!" she roared over the deafening screech of buckled steel.

"I'm here!"

He burst through the rolling thick of the smoke, blood pouring from a jagged gash on his forehead, his pistol locked at the ready. Beside him, Vesper dragged himself out from behind a cracked support column, coughing up dust and spitting blood.

"Next time," Vesper wheezed, wiping a streak of soot from his jaw, "I vote we don't stand next to the exploding psychopath."

"Agreed," Kaelen grunted, muscle flexing as he heaved a massive chunk of fallen slab off his legs. "Son of a bitch heavy."

Mari didn't answer. She was already at the edge of the jagged chasm where the floor had cratered. The explosion hadn't just breached the basement—it had obliterated the foundation entirely.

Below lay a vast, suffocating void. No concrete. No pipes. Just ancient, abyssal stone and gargantuan pillars vanishing into absolute blackness. Strange, jagged runes crawled over every visible surface, pulsing with a faint, sickening malice.

Mari dropped to a crouch, her fingertips brushing the stone edge. The air rushing up was bone-chilling. Sub-zero.

"This shit was here long before the hospital," she whispered, her stomach dropping into a tight coil.

Cassian leaned over the void, eyes sharp. "How far down?"

Mari kicked a chunk of concrete into the abyss. They waited. One second. Three. Five.

Nothing. No impact.

"That's no basement," Vesper muttered, thumbing back the hammer on his piece. "That's a whole lot of nope."

"No," Mari said softly. "It's a fucking dungeon."

A low, guttural vibration rattled the soles of their boots. Deep in the darkness, something massive stirred.

Kaelen raised his heavy warhammer, his jaw set. "Then we don't go down."

"Too late!" Mari snapped as a violent metallic groan shuddered through the chamber.

The floor buckled. The remaining emergency lights flickered, hissed, and detonated, plunging them into utter pitch. Then, forty feet below, a red light ignited. Then two. Then a nightmare sea of crimson pinpricks flashed open in the darkness.

Hundreds of them.

"Those aren't lights," Vesper breathed, stepping back as he leveled both barrels. "Ah, hell."

They surged. A terrifying hive of massive, clawed silhouettes scrambled up the pillars and walls—four-legged horrors, snapping jaws, tearing stone as they moved with unnatural speed. At the center of the abyss, the dark itself seemed to bend and warp around a towering, shifting mass.

Mari's instincts screamed so loud it felt like a physical blow. "Back!"

Cassian didn't hesitate. "How bad?"

"Bad enough that we don't fucking fight!"

"You?" Kaelen scoffed, stunned.

"I said we don't fight!" Mari pointed a bloody blade at the glowing walls. "Look!"

The runes weren't static. They were sliding, interlocking, grinding together as entire sections of the subterranean cavern rotated like giant gears. Stone shrieked against stone.

"It's not opening," Cassian growled, his grip tightening on his gun. "It's waking up."

From the depths, a massive circular altar rose on ancient chains. At its center, space itself tore open—a frame-less, hinge-less tear in reality spilling thick, crimson light across the floor.

A figure stepped through the tear.

Tall. Skeletal. Its body was wrapped in writhing strips of damp, ink-black cloth that clung to it like living skin. Slowly, its head snapped toward Mari. A single, sickening crimson eye unclasped in the middle of its featureless face.

The voice didn't come from a mouth. It rattled inside their skulls, booming off the stone:

CYCLE RECOGNIZED.

Mari's fingers went numb around her hilt. Cassian stepped up shoulder-to-shoulder with her. "What cycle?"

The entity's head tilted with a sickening crunch of bone.

ASSASSIN RECOGNIZED.

"That's not an answer, you creepy bastard!" Vesper shouted, raising his pistols.

The single eye slid from Mari to Vesper, then to Kaelen.

THREE BONDED GUARDIANS DETECTED... PRIMARY SUBJECT HAS ALTERED THE ORIGINAL SEQUENCE.

Mari's heart hammered against her ribs. "What happens now?"

The horror's torn cloth peeled back at the maw, revealing rows of needle-thin teeth in a grotesque grin.

THE DUNGEON COMPENSATES.

BOOM.

The floor beneath them erupted into a geyser of claws, teeth, and bone.

Kaelen moved instantly—his hammer swept around in a brutal arc that obliterated the first beast, smashing its head against the wall in a spray of black gore. Cassian fired rapidly into the swarm, double-tapping skulls, while Vesper's dual pistols barked a rhythmic, deafening melody of deadly precision.

Mari didn't waste a shot. She moved like liquid shadow. Three creatures closed in—one flanking left, two leaping high. Bait.

She dropped into a low slide beneath razor-sharp claws, flipped her knife, and drove it upward into a beast's jaw, tearing through the roof of its mouth. Black, acrid blood sprayed across her face. "Goddammit!" she spat, yanking the dying creature into the path of the second while Cassian blew the third's head off right over her shoulder.

"Left!" Cassian roared.

Mari spun, ducked a whip-like appendage, stepped inside the monster's reach, and jammed her blade straight into its rib joint. It screeched, convulsing violently. She yanked the blade free.

"Don't chase them!" she screamed over the chaos.

"Why?" Cassian yelled back, dropping an empty mag.

"They're herding us, damn it!" Mari locked eyes with a cluster of beasts retreating toward a dark passageway. "The dungeon wants us deeper!"

Vesper offered a sharp, bloodied grin. "Then let's piss it off—"

The stone beneath his boots shattered.

"Vesper!" Mari shrieked, lunging forward.

His fingers scraped the jagged edge for a fraction of a second before the floor completely caved. He plunged into the abyss.

"Fuck!" Mari threw herself toward the edge, but Cassian caught her violently around the waist, pulling her back just as the brink collapsed further.

"Let me go!" she snarled, clawing at his grip.

"That's what it wants, damn it!"

A gunshot cracked from the black below, followed instantly by Vesper's echoed voice: "A little fucking busy down here!"

Mari leaned over the edge. Twenty feet down, Vesper was hanging by one arm from a twisted metal beam, his second pistol clutched in his teeth while three crawling abominations scaled the wall directly beneath his dangling legs.

She re-sheathed her knife in a single flash and grabbed a thick cable hanging off the shattered ceiling.

Cassian caught her wrist. "Mari—"

"I am not leaving him to die!"

Kaelen stepped up, kicking a twitching corpse out of the way. "Then neither are we."

Kaelen wrapped a massive arm around Mari's waist, Cassian locked onto her other side, and together, they hurled themselves into the dark.

The cable snapped taut with a violent jerk, then snapped under their weight. "Ah, shit!"

They plummeted. Mari twisted mid-air, spotting a beast lunging from the wall toward Vesper. She let go, falling freely through space for one terrifying, weightless second. She drove her knife hilt-deep into the lunging beast's back, broke her descent on its corpse, kicked off its spine, and landed in a sharp roll right beside Vesper's beam.

Vesper spat the gun out of his mouth. "You could've waited."

"You're fucking welcome," she spat, kicking a claw away from his foot.

He grinned through the dust. "Sweetest thing you've ever said to me."

Cassian slammed down beside them, weapons hot, while Kaelen hit the stone floor like a meteor, cracking the ancient rock beneath his boots.

Above them, the ceiling grunted and sealed shut with a final, heavy thud.

Trapped.

Mari whipped around, sweeping the area. Ahead of them lay three massive archways:

The First: Drenched in fresh, dripping blood.

The Second: Encrusted in thick, whispering frost.

The Third: Completely, eerily spotless.

"Blood is combat," Cassian said, catching his breath.

"Frost is an ambush," Mari countered instantly.

Vesper pointed a bloody pistol toward the clean archway. "And that clean piece of shit?"

Mari stared into the pristine corridor. "The safest."

Kaelen's brow furrowed, his grip tightening on his hammer. "Which means it's a death trap."

Mari's lips pulled back into a cold, dangerous smile. "Exactly."

Behind them, the tear in reality flared violently. The entity stepped through once more—and behind it, a horde of dozens surged forward.

Mari ripped her blade free, wiping the black bile onto her trousers.

"Clean corridor," she ordered.

Cassian glanced at her, eyes burning through the smoke. "You sure?"

"Not a fucking chance." She kicked off the ground into a sprint. "But the dungeon just gave us three choices—so we're taking the one it desperately doesn't want us to pick!"

They ran as one into the clean dark. Behind them, the hospital above vanished forever into the abyss—and deep beneath the earth, the Spire began its terrifying ascent.
