The stairwell wasn’t just a vertical tomb—it was a slaughterhouse choked on its own historic rot.

Pulverized concrete, rusted rebar, and the metallic stench of long-dried blood burned in Mari’s nostrils. The dead emergency lights hung like corpses, leaving only a razor of moonlight filtering down from the rooftop to slice through the dark.

Mari hit the stairs, descending fast.

Her boots didn't hit the concrete so much as skim it. Reverse-grip on her blade, she moved with the instinct of a phantom—a predator who had perfected the exact acoustic signatures of a human throat being torn open.

He was alive.

The realization was a jagged blade twisted between her ribs. The Syndicate’s master assassin. The monster who had carved her open in the very first cycle. The man she had personally watched bleed out.

Except the bastard was breathing down there in the dark.

She hit the next landing, accelerating into a sprint, every nerve screaming for blood—

A thick hand violently snared the back of her leather collar.

Her momentum snapped her back so hard her spine cracked, her knife whipping around on pure reflex. Cassian hauled her backward into his chest, his forearm locking like an iron bar across her chest while his other hand clamped down on her wrist, trapping the blade inches from his throat.

"Slow down," he growled against her ear, his hot breath fanning the baby hairs at her nape.

Mari twisted fiercely in his hold, her chest heaving against his arm. "Let me go!"

"No." Cassian’s grip tightened, burying her back deeper into his torso, pinning her legs before she could throw herself down the drop. "You’re running on pure, unadulterated adrenaline. Your heart is hammering, your vision is narrowed, and you're staring at the stairs instead of sweeping the blind angles."

"He killed me, Cassian!" The words rasped out, raw and bled-dry.

Cassian’s jaw hardened, the air between them suddenly charged with static.

"First cycle," Mari snarled, her knuckles turning white around her hilt as she glared down into the abyss. "Same voice. Same sadistic bastard. He pinned me to the floor, opened my throat, and bathed in it while I suffocated."

Cassian released her wrist, but his massive hand slid to the back of her neck, his fingers bruising as he anchored her to his side. His golden eyes flared in the dim light. "Then we make sure he doesn't get another fucking chance. You don't hunt a ghost alone. Not anymore."

A shadow peeled itself away from the landing beneath them without a sound.

Vesper.

His twin suppressed sidearms were already raised, black steel angled into the gloom. "Found him."

Mari’s pupils dilated. "Where?"

Vesper tilted his head, his face a mask of cold, psychotic focus. "Moving."

A microscopic scrape of leather on grit echoed from the dark below. Then, dead silence.

A slow, vicious smile spread across Vesper’s face. "Fast bastard," he purred, inhaling through his nose with disturbing relish. "But he’s leaking. I can smell the iron. And he's fucking terrified."

A massive shape filled the stairwell above them. Kaelen.

The giant’s armored frame blocked out the faint moonlit sky. His heavy war-hammer rested over one shoulder, bringing the scent of ozone and burnt oil with him. As Mari tried to slip past Cassian, Kaelen’s gauntleted hand clamped over her forearm like a hydraulic vise.

"Together," Kaelen rumbled, his voice vibrating straight through her chest.

Mari glared down at his grip. "You're going to slow me down."

Kaelen’s lip curled into a dangerous smirk. "Try me."

BOOM.

Four floors down, a heavy blast door was torn entirely off its steel frame, sending a deafening, metallic shockwave screaming up the shaft.

Mari’s killer instincts instantly rewired the threat. "He’s baiting us down. He wants us in the dark."

Cassian racked the slide of his heavy pistol with a vicious clack. "Why?"

"The basement has only one way in and zero ways out," she said, her eyes narrowing.

Vesper’s manic smile evaporated. "The morgue."

"Freezer vaults. Sealed drainage channels. No windows," Mari spat, staring into the dark. "A kill box."

Cassian’s hand shot out, wrapping around her waist. "Then let's go tear his box apart."

"What—"

Cassian vaulted the heavy iron railing, pulling her straight into the air with him.

Her stomach slammed into her throat as they plummeted through two stories of empty air. They hit the lower platform hard; Mari absorbed the impact, rolled across the wet concrete, and came up on one knee with her knife primed. Cassian slammed down next to her, boots cracking the stone.

Kaelen didn't bother with grace—the giant simply dropped straight down, the floorboards groaning in protest as he slammed down like a meteor. Vesper descended in a storm of tactical brutality, firing two suppressed rounds blind into the lower shadows as he hit the landing.

"Keep pushing!"

They blew through the final doors, breaching the basement.

The cold hit them like a wet shroud, dense with the stomach-churning stench of formaldehyde, stagnant water, and the sickly-sweet odor of decaying meat. An inch of black, foul water coated the tiles. Red emergency strobes flickered overhead, casting a visceral, pulsing haze over the corridor.

Mari stepped into the water, her eyes instantly scanning the bloody reflections on the floor.

Four pairs of boots... four reflections.

Then—a fifth.

Right behind her.

Mari spun, blade slashing through empty air—nothing.

The red strobes died instantly. Total, absolute darkness swallowed the hallway.

Mari brought her knife up, but a razor-thin monofilament wire snapped taut against her windpipe.

The garrote bit instantly through skin, drawing a hot ribbon of blood. Mari jammed two fingers beneath the wire before it could crush her cartilage, dropping her center of gravity to throw the killer off balance.

A body slammed flush against her back—ice-cold skin, soaking-wet cloth, and a rancid, freezing breath against her ear.

"Three thousand cycles..." the voice purred, sickeningly affectionate, sending a jolt of primal terror straight down her spine. "...and you still leave your throat wide open, little bird."

Mari’s teeth bared in a feral growl as the wire tightened, crushing her fingers against her throat.

"I remember the sound of your airpipe snapping," he whispered softly. "I've missed it."

Mari slammed her heel back into his kneecap with everything she had.

CRACK.

The assassin’s grip slackened for a fraction of a second—all she needed.

A muzzle flash detonated right beside them as Vesper blew a hole into the ceiling overhead. Heavy concrete slabs rained down, crushing the space between Mari and her attacker. The wire whipped free, slicing her fingers, and Mari fell forward onto her hands and knees in the foul water, gasping for air.

The assassin melted back into the shadows, but Kaelen was already moving.

The giant lunged blind, his massive hand shooting out and catching the shadow squarely by the throat. Kaelen drove the man backward with sickening force, slamming him into the tiled wall.

THWACK.

Tile shattered. Kaelen slammed him again. And again. The third impact left a bloody spiderweb splintered across the ceramic.

"Got you, you little shit," Kaelen roared.

The assassin drove a hidden stiletto up toward Kaelen’s armpit, but Cassian stepped in like a freight train, delivering a brutal lateral kick to the assassin’s knee.

The joint folded backward with a gruesome SNAP. The assassin shrieked, a sound barely human, as Cassian shoved the burning hot barrel of his sidearm directly under the man's chin, forcing his head up.

Vesper materialized on his flank, jamming twin muzzles into the man's temples, his face twisted into a demonic snarl. "Touch her again," Vesper hissed, "and I will skin you alive from the toes up."

Mari dragged herself up against the far wall, her fingers clutching her bleeding neck. Her throat was on fire, her vision swimming in crimson.

The red emergency strobes flickered back to life, bathing the brutal scene in a bath of dark blood.

Mari stared at the trapped killer—and her blood ran cold.

The face was the same. The same cold eyes, the same sunken cheekbones. But the flesh... the flesh was wrong. His skin was an oily, corpse-like gray, laced with bulging black veins that pulsed with a dark, unnatural sludge. His eyes weren't human anymore—the irises had bled away into endless, abyssal blackness.

Then his coat tore open.

Embedded directly into his sternum, fused to his ribs and bleeding black fluid, was a rotating metallic sphere. The exact same alien core she had seen in the roof abomination.

It whirred, spinning rapidly beneath his skin, its core flashing a deep, sickening crimson.

Once.

Twice.

The assassin’s pitch-black eyes met Mari's. Black blood oozed from his grinning lips. "Mari..."

Cassian shoved the gun harder into his throat, his knuckles white. "How the fuck do you know her name?"

The assassin ignored the steel at his head, his smile widening until his cheeks split. "The Spire remembers you, little bird. The loop didn't break..." His black veins began to glow with blinding white light. "...it evolved."

Mari’s eyes dropped to the sphere. The mechanical hum wasn't an engine revving up.

It was a siphon.

The floorboards hummed. The stagnant water began to vibrate, dancing in intense ripples around their boots. The air grew thick with static, making the hair on Mari’s arms stand on end.

The core wasn't powering him—it was overloading the room.

"GET BACK!" Mari screamed, throwing herself toward Cassian. "IT'S A OVERLOAD!"

"BOMB!" Cassian yelled, his eyes widening.

The assassin cackled, a wet, horrifying sound, as the sphere detonated into a blinding sun of white plasma.

Cassian tackled Mari to the floor, rolling his massive frame over her just as the blast wave tore through the morgue. Kaelen threw his back to the shockwave, shielding Vesper, who slammed behind a concrete pillar.

The room erupted.

A wall of pure, incinerating heat swept through the corridor. Stainless steel cabinets peeled like paper, formaldehyde tanks exploded in violent fireballs, and the stagnant floor water instant-boiled into a blinding cloud of scalding steam.

In that fractions-of-a-second flash of total devastation, Mari saw the assassin standing at the center of the inferno.

He wasn't burning. He was disintegrating, laughing as his flesh dissolved.

And behind his vaporizing body, carved deep into the reinforced concrete wall beneath the peeling paint, a massive symbol ignited in burning golden light.

A massive, perfect spiral. The mark of the Spire. The mark carved into her own flesh when she died the first time.

The floor beneath them didn't just shake—it fractured.

From miles beneath the hospital, deep within the earth, a sound answered. A subterranean pulse like the beating of a titan’s heart.

THUMP.

THUMP.

Then, a voice—neither male nor female, echoing directly inside Mari’s skull, shaking the fillings in her teeth:

FOUND YOU, MARI.
