In the small room, I handed over twenty sheets of Goblin Silk to Sofia-san, pulling them from my [Subspace Storage]. She placed her hand over the silk, muttered “[Appraisal],” and it gave off a faint glow.
”Definitely Goblin Silk,” she said. “And to think you have this many of such a valuable rare drop item…”
She seemed to be thinking about something, but I was more surprised that Sofia-san could use [Appraisal]. That’s not good. If she appraises me, my current status might be… problematic. I summoned my courage and asked.
”Sofia-san… can you use [Appraisal] on people?”
She laughed softly before answering.
”Normally, [Appraisal] only tells you what an object is. It doesn’t reveal a person’s status or anything like that. To check your status, you’d need to go to a major church and have them use a magic tool on you. Or, once you reach level twenty, a [Status Window] appears, so you can see your own status. But the church charges a hefty donation for that service, so most ordinary people never learn their own status. Yu-san… are you past level twenty?”
Huh. So you can’t see your own status until level twenty. I guess level twenty is considered high-tier, then? And most people never even know their own status… It’s probably like the difference between Awakened and ordinary people back on Earth, huh?
Still, my [Appraisal] is seriously broken. Being able to peek at anyone’s status, and getting detailed info from appraising items… that’s the kind of thing you shouldn’t talk about. I guess I’m just full of secrets, aren’t I?
Once Sofia-san finished processing the Goblin Silk at the counter, she handed me a small leather pouch with five Gold Coins as payment. Today’s earnings: five Gold Coins, two Large Silver Coins, five Silver Coins, seven Large Copper Coins, and six Copper Coins. Thank you, oh goblin lords. I still have those Goblin Magic Stones, too. Apparently, goblin clubs and bows aren’t worth anything, and rusted short swords are just scrap metal.
I stuffed one Silver Coin, a Large Copper Coin, and a few Copper Coins into the pouch and slipped it into my pocket. The rest went into [Subspace Storage].
Sofia-san was about to explain the guild and adventurer system to me when –
”Gruuu…”
Her stomach growled. Her face turned bright red. Adorable.
I glanced at my watch. Past 8:00 PM. Between my otherworld teleportation and fighting through the dungeon, I’d been so caught up I hadn’t noticed, but I was hungry too. I pulled out the egg sandwiches and ham sandwiches I’d bought at the convenience store before heading into Hachioji Dungeon, along with a couple of drinks. I split each sandwich in half.
”Are you sure I can have this?” she asked, her nose twitched eagerly.
”I’m not sure if it’ll be to your taste, but please, go ahead.”
Sofia-san took a bite of the ham sandwich. Her eyes went wide at the harmony of ham, cheese, and mayonnaise, and then she swayed her shoulders happily. Next, she tried the egg sandwich – and her face lit up with a huge grin, clearly over the moon. But when she took a sip of the carbonated drink… she stood up and let out a triumphant roar.
After that, she sat back down in her chair looking like her soul had left her body. I gently prompted her to continue the guild explanation.
”I’m so sorry,” she said. “It was so delicious, I completely lost myself.”
Don’t worry about it. I got to see so many different expressions of yours today.
”First, about the Adventurers’ Guild,” she began. “The guild is an organization that covers the entire continent. Your guild card is valid even outside this country. If you move to another branch, your records and bank account will still be accessible.”
”There are three types of quests: standing quests, designated quests, and forced quests. Standing quests involve defeating monsters or gathering materials. The reward is determined by the specific monster or material. Designated quests are requests to defeat or collect specific monsters specified by the client. Payment is made upon delivery. Forced quests happen when a town is in danger – adventurers are summoned compulsively. Compensation is decided based on the situation at the time.”
”The rewards you receive have already had the guild’s commission and taxes deducted, so adventurers don’t need to pay any additional taxes themselves.”
”Next, about adventurer ranks. There are ranks from G up to A. For your first year, you remain at G-rank. Starting from your second year, you can rank up based on achievements and examinations. You can accept designated quests from F-rank onward, but you’re only allowed to take quests up to one rank above your current one.”
”Party registration allows up to five members. We cover the details when you register a party. And that concludes my explanation about the guild and adventurers.”
Sofia-san finished her explanation with a look that said, “Mission accomplished.”
