The system did not pause to assess the crowd’s reaction.

It struck Elena like a thunderbolt the instant Kael spoke.

[ASSET #1 LOYALTY MILESTONE: 25 > 45] [DECLARATION BOND: PUBLIC AND UNBREAKABLE] [DIVIDEND PAYOUT: 15% COMBAT PROFICIENCY TRANSFER] [NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: SHADOW STEPS COMPLETE] Power surged in her veins.Full novel: I Possessed The Villainess, But My Trash Skill Is A SSSRank Investment — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It came in a rush, a tidal wave of crimson energy that forced a sharp gasp from her lungs and a tight, white-hot pressure behind her retinas as the flood turned the black water of her vision to mist.

The world changed.

The hazy ring of bodies around the arena became a grid of vectors.

Vulnerabilities.

Distances.

The rough grain of the wooden floor became a language that told her speed, told her strength, where all the spectators’ blind spots lay, and how long each one would live after she cut them, precisely, right between their vertebral bodies.

The dull shadow sense burned bright at the edge of her awareness, showing her not simply where shadows stretched and pooled around the edge of the sand pit, but that there were other places to stand, too—behind the benches and the barriers, inside the folds of the Headmaster’s dark robes—and that if she placed her feet carefully, she could cross the distances instantly by stepping into them.

Celestine still stared at Kael, her hand outstretched and uncurling in slow, shuddering increments.

The murmuring of the audience was rising to an unsteady pitch as the carefully written narrative of this scene was torn loose from their heads, leaving some people laughing and others choking back tears.

The slave was supposed to choose the light.

The heroine was always supposed to win here.

Elena placed one foot in front of the other, feeling her knees bend just so and the sand give subtly beneath her insteps.

“Lady Luminere,” she murmured, already hearing the odd inflection in her voice, already knowing she was watching people see her body with slightly more than casual interest, “Thank you for your concern, but my investments are currently performing rather well.

I don’t believe there would be any need to liquidate them.” She turned to the Headmaster.

“Excuse us, please.

If the exhibition is at an end, I’ll be taking my guard to our quarters.

He needs to…

decompress.” The Headmaster opened and closed his mouth, his gaze drifting to the useless scanner at his belt, to the tearful countenance of Lord Cassius, to the expectant expressions of an entire amphitheater.

Finally, he said, “Leave.

Lady Vance, this matter is not concluded.

The Academy will be requesting a reevaluation of your enrollment, and your…

asset.” “Of course,” said Elena Vance, smiling.

“I look forward to the audit.” Lady Vance and her guard exited through the connecting tunnel, parting the anxious audience with slow, deliberate movements of her limbs.

Nobody tried to stop her, and yet the silence that rose behind her was the sound of something unspoken being acknowledged.

Wherever Elena walked, her pace was careful and even.

Her shoulders rolled once with every breath.

Her pulse was visible in the slight tightening of her neck veins.

The world narrowed, as it had in the final minutes of the duel, till her perception was focused entirely on the tunnel wall ahead.

“Too much,” thought Elena, feeling her heart race far too fast in her chest.

Too soon.

We revealed too much in the end.

Kael was waiting for her just beyond the tunnel exit when she paused, a half-tired sigh escaping her parted lips as her fingers ghosted lightly against the cool stone walls.

The glow in Kael’s eyes had gone out, his pupils reducing in size until only the very center remained gold instead of the copper shade that usually filled them.

His hand rested lightly on the pommel of his dagger as the other trailed just below her right cheekbone.

“You were magnificent,” he said quietly.

“I was reckless.” Elena pressed her palms flat against her eyes.

She wanted to feel ashamed, and she hated that it came so easily.

“A-rank potential.

Now they know…” Her throat tightened.

“They’ll come for the military, the church…

my father…

everybody will want you!” Kael knelt before her, his posture as pliant as it had ever been.

As she had seen him in the stable, as she had seen him when she bought him at auction, except this time his head was lifted and his eyes were clear.

“No,” said the swordsman, smiling slightly.

“What none of them can take is given willingly.

You are mine, Lady Vance, because I chose you.

Not because of a choker and a contract, but because you were the first who looked at me and saw something worth building, rather than something worth breaking.” Elena lowered her hands.

Her eyes were red, smudged with tears that she hated.

She hated it, because crying was unprofessional.

She hated it, because there were so many people watching her right now.

But most of all, she hated how badly Kael’s words made her want to lean down and press her nose against the warm pulse at his neck, let the scent of his skin soothe that nagging, anxious feeling in her bones like nothing else could.

“Stop.” She sniffed angrily, wiping at her eyes.

“Get up.

We have to go.

The Headmaster’s reevaluation will most likely take hours.

We need to leave the premises.” “Where to?” Elena glanced at her status indicator, noting, rather surprised, the soft pulse of red magic along her nerves indicating that Shadow Steps had been fully formed.

“First we deliver a message.

Then…” She shot him a tired smile.

“Then we head to the legal office and make sure they’ll never take you from me.” Elena and Kael backtracked through the underground corridors, emerging into the main hall just before noon.

The letters Elena had sent off that morning had already been dealt with, and the thin, pale clerk at the reception desk jumped out of his chair when he recognized her.

“Lady Vance!

I—I didn’t expect that you’d come in person…” “Are the papers complete?” Elena snapped, ignoring the nervous tic in his lower lip.

“Y-yes.

We have the filing for the emancipation of Kael Vortigern, ex-slave of House Vance, who is now personally sponsored by you, Lady Vance, and your request regarding financial emancipation from the Vance family, severing this allowance and establishing independent legal status.” The clerk hesitantly placed two documents on the desk between them.

“All that remains is your final signature and…

the blood seal.” Elena took the documents, a faint smile touching her lips.

“File them publicly.

I want the registry updated by dinner.” The clerk nodded furiously, scrambling to his feet and returning to the inner offices.

Elena folded the paper into an appropriate rectangle.

The magic that bound it glowed, waiting, eager.

It took another heartbeat for Elena to place her right thumb on the wax seal, a silver needle pricking the pad of her thumb.

“File them publicly.

I want the registry updated by dinner,” she repeated.

When they left the offices, a commotion was occurring back in the main hall.

Elena’s Shadow Sense prickled at the air, picking up the scent of danger as they turned a corner on the way to the exits.

Half a dozen armed soldiers blocked the corridor, several of their bodies pressed up against the open doors of the central hall, voices raised in argument.
