[ A one time Unique Skill selection is available. This offer will not repeat. Choose carefully. ]
I sat bolt upright.
"..."
"..."
"OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
I scrambled to my feet so fast my chest nearly knocked me off balance again.
"A CHEAAAAAAAAAT!" I screamed at the ceiling, fists raised, skirt askew, dignity in ruins. "THE WORLD ISN'T A BITCH IN THE END!"
The system, bless its cold mechanical heart, had finally decided I deserved a starter pack. A Unique Skill. One time. Not repeatable. Choose carefully.
"Okay. Okay okay okay." I paced the room, my heart hammering. "This is the character creation screen. This is the moment that separates the protagonists from the tutorial corpses. I've read enough light novels to know a 'choose your cheat' event is the single most important decision of my entire second life."
I wiped my face, took a deep breath, and summoned the selection window with the gravity of a man defusing a bomb.
"Show me the menu," I whispered. "And please, please let one of the options be something that isn't sexual."
"Okay, before I go full gacha mode, let's review the basics. What even is a Unique Skill?"
I paced the room, doing my best university lecture impression for an audience of one mirror.
"Skills, by definition, are abilities you obtain either in Gates usually as books dropped by monsters like some kind of fantasy loot system or through training. Swordsmanship, Mana Breathing, the classics. And depending on your Specialty, certain branches come easier. Me? Ice Mage. So learning sword skills would be about as efficient as bringing a knife to a blizzard fight. Magic skills. Focus. Discipline."
I held up a finger.
"But Unique Skills? Those are a different animal entirely. They exist for exactly one person and can't be learned, copied, or bought. They're not really 'skills' so much as personal rules of reality that apply only to you. Case in point: the protagonist himself. Jin Kang."
I grimaced at his name.
"[Genius] his Unique Skill. It lets him learn and grow at a rate that makes everyone else look like they're moving through syrup. That's why the game opens with him as the feared Rank 1 first year at C , a rank most second years hadn't even touched. The guy is a walking cheat code."
I stopped pacing and stared at the floating selection window.
"Which means this menu is my chance to be a walking cheat code too. Alright, let's see the options."
The window obligingly unfurled its list.
[ UNIQUE SKILL SELECTION CHOOSE ONE ]
▸ [APPROACHING STORM Unique. All hostile entities within 50m experience a 15% reduction in reaction speed. Passive.]
"Combat utility. Solid. Boring. Noted."
▸ [MANA TIDE Unique. Mana regenerates 30% faster while resting; during combat, regenerates 10% faster.]
"Resource economy. Very tempting for a mage. A slow, grinding, respectable temptation."
▸ [COLD READING Unique. Emotional states of anyone observed for 5+ seconds are displayed to the user as simple descriptors.]
"Ooh. A lie detector on legs. That's genuinely good for social manipulation. File under: strong contender."
Then I scrolled down, and the system remembered what kind of game it was.
▸ [SECOND WIND Unique. After climaxing, all fatigue is cleared and combat efficiency rises by 20% for one hour.]
"...Why does the post nut clarity come with a combat buff?! Who tested this?! A wizard?! A horny wizard?!"
▸ [MAGNETIC PRESENCE Unique. All individuals who perceive the user's body experience a significant increase in desire to initiate physical contact. Passive. Cannot be disabled.]
"Absolutely not. I'm trying to avoid becoming a community property, and this skill is basically a 'please grope me' aura with no off switch. Deleted."
▸ [SENSORY SOVEREIGN Unique. The user can freely adjust the intensity of all physical sensations they experience, from 0% to 500%.]
I stared at that one for a long, dangerous moment. On one hand: turn off the Third Rate Sensitivity trait entirely and live a normal life! On the other hand: 500% on a body already calibrated like a detonator? That wasn't defense, that was a weapon I'd inevitably point at myself.
"Tempting. Suspiciously tempting. Like a casino offering you free chips."
And then I saw it.
▸ [UNBINDING Unique. Grants immunity to the death penalty clause of any Mana Contract entered into by the user. Garanties given by the user remain valid and binding on all other parties.]
I read it once.
I read it twice.
"...Huh."
It wasn't flashy. No fireballs, no stat boosts, no glowing auras. Just a quiet, legalistic little rule: contracts can't kill you, but they still bind everyone else.
And that was exactly why it was a game changer.
Because this world this eroge world ran on Mana Contracts. They were the backbone of everything that mattered. Guild agreements, debts, alliances, any promise people actually needed kept. Any Awakened could write one through their status window: two parties, conditions, and a death clause sitting underneath it all like a loaded gun. Break the terms, and the system didn't send a warning letter. It just ended you.
The truly nasty part was the Garantie. Proof delivered before the contract went live an item, money, a favor, an act, whatever the other side demanded in "good faith." Only once that was handed over did the death clause lock in. People weaponized it constantly. Get someone to commit to the proof before their brain caught up to their mouth, and suddenly they're bound to terms they'd never agree to with a clear head.
And you could clearly imagine how the heroines got trapped by these things.
Small mistake? Sign a Mana Contract obey that guy for one week. A week passes, they think they're free. Nope! Everything was recorded. And unless they wanted it made public delivered straight to him they'd sign a second Mana Contract. And a third. A chain, link by link, until the "one week" became "his slave." That was how the game's corruption loops worked. Not through strength. Through paperwork.
But with Unbinding?
I could give a Garantie. I could sign anything anyone shoved in front of my face. The other party would still be bound still one broken promise away from dying over it.
But I wouldn't be.
I could pay the price up front, walk away, and leave them tied to the terms. I could set limits in advance. I could control exactly what happened to me in a way no one else in this world not Jin, not his SS rank mother, not anyone could.
"This is it," I whispered, a grin spreading across my face that no one was around to see. "Not the sexiest skill. Not the strongest. But it's the one that lets me play with loaded guns while everyone else holds them to their own heads."
I thought about it for exactly four more seconds. Cold Reading was great. Mana Tide was safe. But safety doesn't save you from an apocalypse spider, and neither does raw power if you get chained to a bed by a contract first.
"Decision made."
I pressed it.
[ UNIQUE SKILL CONFIRMED: UNBINDING ]
[ This offer will not repeat. ]
The window dissolved into golden motes that sank into my chest.
"Contract immunity acquired," I declared to the mirror, striking what I hoped was a heroic pose and mostly just making my chest situation worse. "Sign away, future Conquerors. Sign everything. I'll be the only person in this entire world walking through your traps unharmed."
I pulled on my blazer, checked the time on my phone, and grabbed my bag.
"Orientation day. First step of the world saving, contract exploiting, spider slaying plan."
Step one: don't trip in front of anyone. Step two: don't let anyone touch me. Step three: become a legend.
"...The order of those steps may require revision."
