Late at night, few lights glowed across the manor.
In one of the lit rooms, a lord and her loyal servant sat across a table, quietly sharing tea.
In a world where social ranks were strict, only two types could share tea before their master—those either bold beyond measure or trusted beyond doubt.
She was the latter.
It had been over thirty years since she came to this estate, and more than fifty since she began serving her lady.
"How was the girl?" the mistress asked gently.
"She seemed a little downhearted, poor thing," the elder maid replied, her voice tinged with quiet reproach.
"That's not what I meant. I'm asking about her potential."
The maid nodded, as if to say she understood already. "Of course she has it. That's why she's being tested." She poured a fresh cup of tea, her movements graceful and familiar.
"She's clever, quick-witted, and remarkably well-educated for her age. Her heart is kind, though her bloodline may cause concern. But with that sharp mind and strong holy power, and with her color... she'll surely become a candidate."
"I see... Then I must prepare myself," the Countess murmured.
In the quiet room of the Emmental Lord's Manor, the former Countess Francesca let out a long, weary sigh.
