Bai Mao sat on the bed, clutching his tablet, editing the “sugar daddy” contract template he had downloaded from the internet.

He deleted all the absurd clauses and rewrote them to fit his arrangement with Yu Xiangchen.

By the time he finished, it was already past 1 a.m. He hesitated for a moment, then decided to send it to Yu Xiangchen.Full novel: I’m a Fake Stand-in! — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The next day.

Bai Mao woke up and first tucked his icy arms and shoulders back into the warm folds of the blanket. He tried to burrow further under it, but fate had other plans, his body curled up and he sneezed twice in quick succession.

Without a heater, the thin cover hardly retained any warmth. Fortunately, tonight he wouldn’t have to make do.

After leisurely washing up, he sat on the bed, scrolling through his phone. A message from his benefactor caught his attention: an address.

Curious, he copied it and checked it in a maps app. It was near the Second Ring business district.

From the map, the location was excellent: a subway station just a hundred meters away, a large shopping mall within five hundred meters, and a supermarket in the basement.

A “golden house hiding a beauty”!

Bai Mao’s mood lifted. He first sent a cat sticker doing a cheer, then typed, “Thank you, Mr. Yu. I’ll pack and head over soon.”

Humming happily, he began packing his luggage.

Before arriving at the Bai residence, his agent Xu Dongming had assumed his hard days were finally over.

Excited yet worried, Bai Mao’s bargain-bin clothes would embarrass him in front of the family, Xu had gathered all the “treasures” Bai Mao had hoarded.

He bagged up the worst ones to donate to impoverished mountain areas, and left the few decent or pricey pieces.

Bai Mao had planned to gradually add more clothes, but now all of it fit neatly into a single suitcase. Convenient!

A soft knock came at the door.

“Bai Mao?” Mother Bianxiu’s voice called out, careful and gentle. “Are you awake? Aunt Chen has breakfast ready. Come eat a little?”

Bai Mao let out a silent chuckle. Wow. Breakfast!

He lazily slouched against the bed, voice weak and dragging, “No thanks, I feel unwell… don’t want to go out.”

“Just eat a little, don’t starve yourself,” Bianxiu urged.

“Your father and older brother skipped work today because of you. They’re downstairs, waiting to talk about yesterday.”

Ah. So breakfast was just an excuse. Bai Mao pouted. He didn’t want to face Bai Huai or Bai Jing’s ugly expressions.

He began to refuse sincerely, but Bianxiu persisted, standing at the doorway like a preacher, “I know you don’t want to discuss that incident, but we need a solution and you can’t skip eating. Bai Mao, listen to your mother, come out.”

Bai Mao grew impatient. A solution? He snorted, then quickly texted his benefactor. Seeing the almost instant reply, he relaxed and got up to open the door.

He wanted to see what “solution” the Bai family could possibly offer.

Bianxiu, believing she had persuaded him, let out a small sigh of relief. She reached to hold his hand, but Bai Mao deftly dodged.

She froze, reminded that he was just recently reunited with the family, so some distance was natural but it still stung.

She thought that the one who didn’t grow up alongside him can never compare to those always by his side.

Feigning calm, she said, “Good child. Let’s go downstairs together.”

As she spoke, Bianxiu studied him.

Bai Mao had fully inherited the couple’s features: tall, slender, fair and smooth-skinned. Only a small faint mole near the throat on his neck broke the uniformity.

Near the mole, a kiss mark from the night before had darkened into a purple bruise, with finger marks faintly visible along the edges.

Though she had resolved to give him up, Bianxiu couldn’t help frowning at the sight. Yet when she descended and saw Bai Sheng sitting nervously, her heart swelled with relief.

Fortunately, they hadn’t left this precious child with that little monster Yu Wantian. Otherwise, she would have been heartbroken.

Aunt Chen came forward first, “Second Young Master, breakfast is ready. Would you like to eat now?”

Bai Mao, with his back to everyone, gave her a half-smile, half-smirk, and ignored her.

Chen, a little embarrassed, clenched her clothes, pouted, and stepped aside, hoping Bianxiu would notice her grievance and scold Bai Mao.

But no one was paying attention, every eye was on Bai Mao.

Expressionless, Bai Mao’s gaze was hollow, “Alright, tell me… what’s your solution?”

Bai Huai, sitting on the single sofa above, spoke sternly, “First, apologize to your older brother.”

Bai Mao raised an eyebrow.

Apologize?

He almost laughed out loud. The Bai family was truly amusing. Ordinary minds could never keep up with their lightning-fast, zigzagging logic.

Bai Jing glanced at Bai Mao. His cheek still bore a faint mark from the slap yesterday, even after a cold compress. His expression was indifferent:

“Father, let it go.”

Bai Sheng tried to mediate too, “Dad, don’t be angry. Second Brother didn’t mean it…”

“Whether he meant it or not, that’s irrelevant! As the saying goes, rules are the framework of order. He was wronged but was it his elder brother who forced that upon him? Since it wasn’t, then he must apologize for hitting Bai Jing!”

Bai Jiahui’s voice carried an unyielding authority, tinged with patriarchal arrogance. Once he decided something, no rebuttal was tolerated.

Now, with his authority challenged, his tone unconsciously rose, sharp like a quarrel.

Seeing Bai Sheng’s eyes rim red as he lowered his head in silence, Bai Jiahui’s heart softened a little. He added, “Shengsheng, don’t interfere in this. If your second brother really hadn’t wanted it, why didn’t he strike out at Young Master Yu instead? Clearly he meant to…. ”

Bai Mao’s eyes widened slightly in disbelief. His reaction wasn’t fake, it was pure, instinctive.

Amazing!

This level of victim-blaming logic was unparalleled, truly eye-opening!

At last night’s birthday banquet, everything had gone awry.

He had been drugged; if not for his quick thinking to cling to the “villain” Yu Xiangchen’s thigh for protection, he would already have suffered unspeakable harm. Hearing these words now nearly made him faint from rage.

“Bai Jiahui, you can actually say such a thing?”

Bai Mao let out a cold laugh, his gaze frosty. Slowly, he began to roll up his sleeves.

That simple movement sent everyone in the room into alert caution.

Their hearts thumped uneasily, could Bai Mao really be about to repeat yesterday’s stunt, rushing in to throw punches again? Just where had he picked up such crude, violent habits, like some bumpkin with no sense of propriety?

“Jiahui.”

Bian Xiu, fearing Bai Mao would lash out, hurried to intervene.

Bai Jing, worried about Bai Sheng’s involvement, immediately said: “Shengsheng, go upstairs first.”

Bai Sheng had wanted to speak, but Bai Jing tugged him back. He froze a moment, then bit his lip and cast a glance around the room before whispering, “Alright.”

He left, and only a handful remained.

Bai Jiahui snorted coldly, his gaze sliding away rather than meet Bai Mao’s eyes.

He was seething inside.

Originally, the banquet had been carefully planned.

Bai Jiahui’s intention was simple: let Bai Mao meet the young master of the Yu family. If the latter approved, then Bai Mao would be “washed clean” and delivered to the Yu residence himself.

And the result?

The Yu young master had simply taken him outright!

From Bai Jiahui’s perspective, once purity and “first time” were lost, their value diminished drastically.

Since the Bai family had already decided to do this, it had to be carried out flawlessly: using Bai Mao as a bargaining chip to extract maximum advantage from the Yu family, so they could ascend into high society as quickly as possible.

But now? Forget bargaining chips.

Who knew if Young Master Yu, after tasting him once, would even want him again?

How could Bai Jiahui not be furious?!

“Enough, enough, stop pulling such a long face. The child has already suffered. Let’s just put Bai Jing’s matter to rest.”

Bian Xiu tried to play mediator, covering her lips with a cough as she gently reminded, “The most important thing now is Young Master Yu’s stance.”

Bai Jiahui’s face was still dark. “What else can we do? The deed is done! Young Master Yu must take responsibility!”

“What does this have to do with him?” Bai Mao interrupted in astonishment.

“So long as I don’t speak of it, no one will ever know I was touched. Yet you’re making a huge fuss, aren’t you just broadcasting it to the whole world? What about the Bai family’s reputation?”

“You little brat…” Bai Jiahui ground his teeth.

Of course, his words were meant to segue into the idea of giving Bai Mao to Yu Wantian. As for reputation, if there were concrete benefits to be gained, what did face matter?

Impatiently, he snapped, “This wasn’t your fault. What’s there to be afraid of?”

“…Oh.”

Bai Mao fixed him with a long, meaningful look.

“So you do know it wasn’t my fault after all.”

Bai Jiahui choked on his words.

At that moment, Bai Mao’s phone buzzed.

He glanced down, it was a message from his patron.

The corners of his lips curved in the faintest smile. Raising his head, he said,

“There’s actually something I’ve never understood.”

Everyone turned to him.

“You all wear your intentions on your faces. I can guess easily enough, you want me tied to Young Master Yu so the Bai family can ride the tide upward. But…” His gaze swept slowly over them. “Ever since I came back, you’ve treated me this way. Aren’t you afraid I might whisper into Young Master Yu’s ear while on the pillow?”

“Hmph.”

Bai Jiahui sneered with disdain.

The Bai family had considered this, of course.

But they weren’t afraid.

The agreement had been struck between Yu Wantian and the Bai family, not Bai Mao. As long as Yu Wantian had half a brain, he wouldn’t break it.

Besides, the Bai family wasn’t stupid; they could see clearly where Yu Wantian’s real affections lay with Bai Sheng.

From start to finish, Bai Mao was just a tool. No matter how favored he might seem, wasn’t Bai Sheng still the true one in Yu Wantian’s heart?

A mere stand-in. How could a substitute ever surpass the original?

Bian Xiu, still mindful of appearances, softened her voice:

“You poor child. Spending so long outside has muddled your mind, filling it with nonsense. This isn’t what you think. The decision your father and I made was for your happiness. How could we possibly harm you?”

Bai Mao gave a careless shrug and a half-smile.

“Whether it’s true or not, you and I both know. No need to keep acting when nobody here believes you anyway.”

He even feigned a look of troubled regret, sighing,

“Besides, your plan does sound clever. But I’ve never once said that the person who touched me last night was Yu Wantian, have I? Such painstaking schemes, plotted for so long and all for nothing. What a pity.”

Everyone froze.

What did he mean?

Just then, the doorbell rang

Goddd! I’m so frustrated and irritated with these kind of family! Using their kids are bargaining chip! But then I enjoy the intense drama and revenge soo.. 🤷🤷
