There was no sound to hear.

No pain to endure.

No body to inhabit.

Only an endless, lightless void.

Then a cold voice passed through the emptiness.

“Life functions terminated.”

Points of light awakened around him.

Thousands of stars emerged from the darkness, each holding a fragment of what he had left behind—a moment of triumph, a bitter mistake, an ambition never fulfilled.

One by one, the stars began to move.

They gathered into a luminous current that wound through the void like a celestial river.

“Soul structure verified.”

“Reincarnation sequence initiated.”

A fracture spread across the darkness.

Light poured through it, and countless forms flashed before Ruel’s awareness.

Slimes gliding through crystalline caverns.

Wolves pursuing prey beneath silver moonlight.

Spiders building vast colonies below the earth.

Kobolds struggling to survive in hostile lands.

Dragons crossing the skies above mountains older than civilization.

Beasts of every shape and size.

Some fragile.

Others terrifyingly powerful.

Each represented a life he might soon inherit.

Without warning, a translucent blue screen materialized before him.

REINCARNATION INTERFACE

Welcome, Departed Soul.

Your former existence has concluded.

Yet death is not the final boundary.

You must now select the vessel that will carry you into your next life.

Your decision will shape your innate abilities, physical advantages, vulnerabilities, growth potential, and available evolutionary paths.

Even the weakest monster may one day become legendary.

And a single life can alter the course of destiny.

Choose the monster that will serve as the vessel for your next life.

Each available species possesses its own:

Physical abilities Natural weaknesses Innate traits Growth potential Evolutionary paths

Once a vessel is selected, the reincarnation process will begin.

Survive.

Grow.

Evolve.

Defy your limits.

Become legendary.

The interface shimmered.

Rows of monstrous forms emerged across its surface, each representing a vessel available for reincarnation.

Ruel studied the countless possibilities before him.

Whatever he selected would become his new body—and determine where his next life began.

He ignored the menu and reached out to touch the star representing the dragon.

He wanted raw power.

The moment his spectral hand reached toward the dragon star, the void shuddered.

The star burned white-hot.

It resisted.

The river of light around him churned violently.

Other stars scattered as if afraid.

The dragon star pulsed with ancient, overwhelming energy—and for one brief, agonizing moment, it let him touch it.

Pain.

Not physical pain.

Soul pain.

The weight of millennia, the fury of storms, the heat of molten earth—all compressed into a single point of contact.

The blue screen flickered wildly.

WARNING

INCOMPATIBLE VESSEL DETECTED

SOUL INTEGRITY: INSUFFICIENT FOR TRUE DRAGON REINCARNATION

SEARCHING FOR COMPATIBLE FORM…

PARTIAL MATCH FOUND

The dragon star shattered.

But a fragment—a single burning shard—embedded itself into his soul.

The void screamed around him.

He was falling.

Falling through layers of reality.

Through fire and stone and ancient magic.

His body began to form around him.

Scales.

Small.

Hard.

Hot to the touch.

A tail.

Claws.

Wings—no.

Not yet.

Nubs.

Promises of wings.

The blue screen stabilized.

REINCARNATION COMPLETE

Species: Wyrmling (Feral)

A draconic larva.

Not a true dragon.

Not yet.

A fragment of dragon essence bound to a lesser vessel.

Weak.

Hungry.

Alone.

But carrying within it the seed of something far greater.

His eyes opened.

Red light.

Heat.

The smell of sulfur and mineral-rich stone.

He lay curled on a ledge of black rock overlooking a magma vent deep underground.

His body was small—no larger than a house cat.

Obsidian scales covered his frame.

His claws scraped against stone as he uncurled for the first time.

Two vestigial wing-nubs twitched on his back.

A forked tongue tasted the air.

Somewhere below, something skittered across the rock.

Somewhere above, something breathed.

The skittering below grew louder.

Multiple legs.

Fast movement.

Coming closer.

Above, the breathing deepened.

Something large.

Sleeping—for now.

His stomach twisted with primal hunger.

His first moments of life had already begun counting down.

Ruel crouched low, scales blending into the dark stone as he prepared to pounce on whatever was making that noise below.

Eat or be eaten.

Ruel pressed low against the black rock, belly flat, claws finding purchase in the crevices of the volcanic stone.

Instinct guided muscles that had never moved before—and somehow, they responded.

The obsidian scales along his spine dimmed, absorbing the faint red glow of the magma below rather than reflecting it.

Predator’s Instinct hummed at the base of his skull.

A warmth.

A direction.

A sense of size and speed feeding directly into his awareness.

Below—eight meters down the sloped ledge—something moved between the rocks.

A Magma Beetle.

Roughly the size of a rat.

Armored carapace glowing faintly orange along its joints, radiating stored heat.

Six legs clicked rapidly across the stone as it followed a trail of mineral deposits, mandibles scraping at the rock face.

It hadn’t noticed him.

Not yet.

Ruel’s forked tongue flicked out, tasting sulfur and something else—something that made his empty stomach clench with desperate need.

Calories.

Protein.

Life.

The beetle paused.

Its antennae twitched.

Ruel’s hind legs coiled.

Skill Used: Ambush Attack

Ruel attempted to pounce from an elevated position onto unaware prey.

Result: Success.

Ruel launched.

His body cut through the heated air like a black arrow.

Claws extended.

Jaws wide.

The beetle’s antennae snapped upward—too late.

He struck it from above with the full weight of his small body, claws punching through the gap between carapace plates.

The beetle shrieked—a high, chittering sound—and thrashed violently beneath him.

Its legs scraped at his scales, leaving faint white scratches but failing to pierce.

His jaws clamped down on the junction between head and thorax.

Crunch.

Hot ichor flooded his mouth.

Bitter.

Mineral-rich.

Sustaining.

The beetle’s legs spasmed once.

Twice.

Then stillness.

COMBAT RESOLVED

Enemy Defeated: Magma Beetle (Level 1) XP Gained: +15 Condition: Minor scratches (cosmetic)

Ruel crouched over his first kill, chest heaving, tongue working to process the alien taste.

Something deep within him—older than instinct, older than this body—recognized the act for what it was.

The first step.

He began to eat.

Tearing through carapace.

Consuming everything.

Wasting nothing.

The heat stored in the beetle’s body didn’t burn—his throat welcomed it like warm water.

As the last of the beetle disappeared, a faint satisfaction settled into his core.

The hunger receded slightly.

Not gone.

Never gone.

But quieted.

Then—

A sound from above.

The breathing changed.

Something shifted.

Stone ground against stone.

A cascade of pebbles rattled down from the cavern ceiling high above.

Whatever slept up there had stirred.

Ruel froze

Ruel swallowed the last of the beetle and immediately flattened himself against the rock, straining to identify what was waking above him.

Ruel pressed himself flat against the stone, jaws still slick with ichor.

Every scale flush against the rock.

Every muscle locked.

His vestigial wing-nubs folded tight against his spine.

He didn’t breathe.

Predator’s Instinct screamed.

Not the gentle warmth of detecting prey.

This was different.

Cold.

Sharp.

A spike of primal terror driven directly into his brain-stem—the kind of signal that said he was small and something above him is not.
