Skill Used: Perception (Identify Threat)
Ruel attempted to observe and identify the creature above through sound, vibration, and thermal sense.
Result: Failure.
Ruel could not fully identify the creature.
Partial information only.
The darkness above the magma vent was absolute.
Whatever rested up there clung to the cavern ceiling—or perhaps occupied a ledge far larger than his own.
Ruel’s thermal sense caught fragments.
Flickers.
Heat.
Immense heat.
Concentrated in a body far, far larger than his.
A shape—barely perceived.
Long.
Coiled.
The suggestion of limbs folded against a torso wider than the ledge Ruel lay upon.
Then a sound.
Low.
Resonant.
Not a growl.
Not a breath.
A rumble.
The kind that vibrated through stone itself.
Two points of amber light appeared in the darkness above.
Slitted.
Ancient.
Half-lidded with sleep.
They swept the cavern lazily.
Ruel’s heart hammered against his ribs.
The eyes passed over his position.
Paused.
Moved on.
The amber lights dimmed.
Closed.
The rumbling faded back into the slow rhythm of deep sleep.
THREAT ASSESSMENT (PARTIAL)
Species: Unknown (Draconic?) | Size: Massive (estimated 15-20 meters) | Level: ???
| Status: Sleeping | Disposition: Unaware of Ruel’s presence—for now.
NOTE: This creature vastly exceeds Ruel’s current capabilities.
Direct engagement would result in immediate death.
Silence returned.
Oppressive.
Heavy with heat and the stench of ancient scales.
Ruel’s claws trembled against the rock.
His body wanted to run.
Every feral instinct shrieked flee.
But another part of him—the part that had reached for the dragon star—looked up at those now-closed eyes and felt something else entirely.
Recognition.
Hunger.
Not yet.
But someday.
The immediate danger had passed.
But this cavern belonged to something else.
Something that could crush him without waking fully.
He needed to move.
Carefully.

Ruel dared to creep upward toward the source of that heat, hoping to find more prey or a safer path while the creature remained in slumber.
Madness.
Pure madness.
Every instinct in Ruel’s feral body screamed downward.
Away.
Into the tunnels below where small things hid from large things.
Where survival meant cowering in cracks until the predators passed.
But Ruel was not merely feral.
He was ambitious.
His claws found the rock face and he began to climb.
Slowly.
One grip at a time.
Obsidian scales scraping silently against volcanic stone as he ascended the cavern wall.
The heat intensified with every meter—not the ambient warmth of the magma below, but a living heat.
Radiant.
Pulsing with breath.
Ruel attempted to climb upward through the cavern while remaining undetected by the sleeping creature.
Ruel made it twelve meters up the wall.
His claws found good holds.
His small body hugged the stone.
The darkness wrapped around him like a cloak.
He was doing well—
A loose stone shifted beneath his rear claw.
It didn’t fall immediately.
It ground.
A short, sharp scrape of rock against rock that echoed through the cavern like a thunderclap.
The breathing above stopped.
Complete silence.
Then—movement.
Vast.
The sound of scales dragging across stone.
A rush of displaced air that pressed Ruel flat against the wall.
The amber eyes opened fully this time.
Wide.
Alert.
Searching.
Ruel froze.
Clinging to the wall like a black lizard against black rock.
Not moving.
Not breathing.
His heart slamming so hard he was certain the vibrations would betray him.
A massive head descended from the darkness above.
Elongated snout.
Scales the color of cooled magma—deep crimson threaded with black cracks.
Horns swept backward like obsidian blades.
Nostrils wider than Ruel’s entire body flared once.
Twice.
Sniffing.
The head swept past him—close enough that the heat of its breath washed over his scales.
Close enough to see individual scales the size of shields.
Close enough to see the scars.
It paused.
The amber eye—just one, turned sideways—fixed on the spot three meters to Ruel’s left.
Staring at nothing.
Processing.
Seconds stretched into eternities.
Then a sound emerged from that enormous throat.
Not a growl.
Not a roar.
A snort.
Dismissive.
Uninterested.
The head withdrew upward.
The vast body resettled with a grinding of stone.
The breathing resumed—slower this time.
Lighter.
Not fully asleep.
Dozing.
Ruel clung to the wall, trembling.
But his eyes had adjusted.
In that brief moment of proximity, he’d seen something.
The ledge above—the creature’s perch—was enormous.
A natural shelf in the cavern wall.
And beyond the coiled mass of the sleeping beast, partially hidden behind its bulk, there was a tunnel opening.
Warm air flowed outward from it.
Not magma-heat.
Different.
Ruel dropped from the wall and sprinted directly toward the creature, hoping to slide underneath its belly while it is still distracted by the dust.
Ruel released the wall.
He dropped.
His claws hit the ledge below with a sharp click and his legs were already moving—driving him forward in a desperate sprint across open stone toward the massive coiled form above.
This wasn’t strategy.
This wasn’t cunning.
This was insanity wearing scales.
Ruel attempted to run beneath/around the massive creature to reach the tunnel on the far side while it was still settling back to sleep.
Ruel’s claws scrambled up the final stretch of rock.
He reached the great ledge.
The creature’s body stretched before him—a mountain range of crimson scales and corded muscle.
He darted toward the gap beneath its chest where one massive foreleg created an arch of space—
The tail moved first.
He never saw it.
A wall of scaled muscle swept across the stone like a battering ram.
It caught Ruel mid-stride and launched him sideways with catastrophic force.
His small body left the ground entirely.
The cavern spun—rock, magma-glow, darkness, rock again—
He hit the far wall.
Something cracked.
Multiple somethings.
DAMAGE SUSTAINED
Tail Swipe (Casual/Reflexive — not a deliberate attack) Damage: 53 HP
HP: 22 / 75
Health: 29%
Injuries: Three ribs fractured.
Left wing-nub torn.
Internal bruising.
Ruel crumpled at the base of the wall, sliding down into a crevice between two boulders.
Blood—dark, almost black—leaked from his mouth.
His vision swam.
Every breath was fire that had nothing to do with his heritage.
Above, the creature rose.
Not lazily this time.
The full enormity of it uncoiled from the ledge.
Forelimbs gripped the stone.
A neck longer than Ruel’s entire sprint arched downward.
The amber eyes were fully open now—burning with irritation rather than fury.
The way a human might look at an insect that had landed on their food.
The massive head descended toward where Ruel had fallen.
Nostrils flared.
A deep, resonant rumble filled the cavern—vibrating Ruel’s broken ribs, rattling his teeth, shaking dust from every surface.
Then—
Stillness.
The great eye found him.
Wedged in his crevice.
Bleeding.
Broken.
Tiny.
It stared.
Ruel stared back.
One amber eye the size of his entire torso, slitted pupil contracting as it focused.
Seconds passed.
The rumble faded into something else.
A sound Ruel couldn’t identify.
Lower.
Almost…
questioning.
The massive head tilted slightly.
Then it withdrew.
Slowly.
The creature resettled on its ledge with a ground-shaking thud.
One eye remained open—watching the crevice.
Ruel hissed weakly, baring his teeth in a final, pathetic display of aggression, ignoring his broken ribs to let it know he still defied it.
Blood bubbled between Ruel’s teeth as he opened his jaws.
The hiss that emerged was pathetic.
Thin.
Wet.
A sound like steam escaping a cracked pipe.
His fractured ribs ground against each other with every expansion of his lungs, sending white-hot agony through his tiny frame.
But his eyes were open.
His teeth were bared.
And every single one of them was pointed at the ancient thing above him.
His stare promised the same thing: he see he.
Whether it was true or not, he refused to look afraid.
The lie tasted like copper and ash.
