Ruel didn’t wait to admire the result.

He ran.

His legs coiled and launched him toward the northwest tunnel entrance—the one he’d descended from.Full novel: In My Eleventh Life, I Became a Dragon — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The only choke point he’d mapped.

The only place where three-against-one became one-at-a-time.

G2 anticipated.

The second Guardian surged forward on heavy legs—faster than something that size had any right to be—cutting an interception angle toward the tunnel mouth.

Its acid-dripping inner jaws spread wide.

Skill Used: Sprint To Tunnel Entrance (Contested)

Ruel attempted to outrun G2 to reach the tunnel choke point before being cut off.

Result: Failure.

G2 reached the tunnel mouth first.

It turned—filling the entrance with its armored bulk, legs bracing against both walls.

Mandibles wide.

Acid pooling on its inner jaws, dripping, hissing against stone.

A living barricade.

Blocked.

Behind Ruel—G1 recovered, shaking its half-melted head, turning three remaining good eyes toward him.

G3 approached from the east, slower, methodical—completing the triangle.

Trapped.

The Queen’s silk network vibrated.

A low, subsonic hum filled the chamber—a frequency that pressed against Ruel’s skull.

Not pheromone.

Not sound.

Command.

The workers stopped fleeing.

They turned.

Dozens of small bodies—individually weak, collectively smothering.

They began moving toward him in concentric rings.

Ruel stood in the center of a closing kill-box.

Three Guardians.

Twenty-plus workers.

One Queen orchestrating from behind

Ruel released a deafening, draconic roar to break their formation, hoping to sow enough chaos to carve a path through the worker swarm.

Ruel planted all four legs.

His chest expanded—ribs spreading, void-cracks blazing like fissures in reality itself.

The Dragon Fragment inside him resonated—awakened by desperation, by fury, by the primal memory of what dragons were.

He opened his jaws.

And roared.

Not a hiss.

Not a shriek.

A sound that belonged to something far larger—far older—than a Wyrmling had any right to produce.

The roar erupted from somewhere deeper than lungs.

It carried weight.

Pressure.

The promise of annihilation encoded in raw sound.

The chamber shook.

Stalactites vibrated.

The bioluminescent fungus flickered as if frightened.

Skill Used: Draconic Roar (Intimidation — Area Effect)

Ruel attempted to release a primal, fear-inducing roar to disrupt formation of workers and momentarily stagger Guardians.

Result: Partial failure.

Partial effect: Workers disrupted.

Guardians unaffected.

Queen’s network momentarily destabilized.

The workers broke.

The concentric rings shattered like glass.

A dozen workers scattered—legs tangling, bodies colliding, pheromone signals drowning in the sheer wrongness of a dragon’s voice in their nest.

Some curled into defensive balls.

Others fled into side tunnels.

Three ran directly into walls.

The Queen’s silk network spasmed—threads vibrating with conflicting signals.

For one heartbeat—maybe two—her command frequency stuttered.

But the Guardians held.

G3 didn’t flinch.

G1 shook its half-melted head and charged.

G2 remained braced in the tunnel mouth, unmoved.

Professional killers.

Bred for exactly this.

But the workers—the swarm—was gone.

A gap opened in the chaos.

Not toward the blocked tunnel.

Toward the eastern side—a secondary passage, smaller, partially obscured by silk curtains.

Worker-sized.

Tight.

Tight enough that no Guardian could follow.

Ruel didn’t hesitate.

He launched himself through the scattered worker bodies—claws raking one aside, jaws snapping at another that stumbled into his path—

DEVOUR (OPPORTUNISTIC — IN MOTION)

Target: Cave Skitterer Worker (trampled, still alive)

Quick consumption—

Fragment Obtained: Silk Production (Trace) — Stacked.

Silk Production upgraded: Trace → Minor.

—and dove for the eastern passage.

G1 lunged behind him.

Acid-slicked mandibles snapped shut where his tail had been a half-second prior.

The hiss of dissolving stone filled the air as acid splashed against the tunnel entrance.

Ruel’s shoulders scraped the walls.

Tight.

Too tight for comfort—his scales grinding against rock, void-cracks flaring with each impact.

But he fit

Ruel paused for a second to secrete a layer of sticky, reinforced silk against the wall, creating a trap for the next pursuer.

Ruel skidded to a halt in the narrow passage—barely two body-widths wide, silk-coated walls pressing close.

Behind him, the scraping of chitin against stone.

G1 couldn’t fit—but something could.

Workers.

Smaller pursuers.

He had seconds.

His jaw worked—not venom this time.

A different gland.

Deeper.

The Silk Production ability—freshly upgraded, still unfamiliar—responded to desperate need.

A thick, viscous fluid oozed from newly-formed spinnerets tucked behind his lower fangs.

He spat it against the walls.

Dragged his jaw across the narrow passage—left wall to right wall—layering strand over strand.

Skill Used: Silk Trap (Improvised Barrier/Snare)

Ruel attempted to produce reinforced silk webbing across the narrow tunnel to snare or slow the next pursuer.

Result: Success.

The silk held.

Not beautiful.

Not elegant.

A crude lattice of glistening strands stretched wall-to-wall—sticky, layered three-deep, anchored to stone where his saliva bonded it to mineral deposits.

It wouldn’t stop a Guardian.

But anything worker-sized hitting this at speed would become tangled—legs glued, mandibles caught, momentum killed.

A living fly-strip.

Ruel backed away from his creation, tasting the chemical residue on his tongue.

His silk glands ached—spent.

That was everything the Minor rank could produce in one burst.

He’d need time before he could generate more.

Behind the web—distant but approaching—the skittering of small legs.

Multiple.

Fast.

Workers.

Sent to flush him out.

He turned and pressed deeper into the eastern passage.

TRAP SET: Silk Snare Location: Eastern passage, 4 meters from nest chamber entrance.

Effect: First 1-3 worker-sized creatures to hit it will be immobilized.

Duration: Until destroyed or dissolved.

The tunnel narrowed further—then curved downward.

The air changed.

Cooler.

Drier.

The pheromone density thinned with each meter of distance from the nest.

Behind him—a sudden shriek.

High.

Panicked.

Legs thrashing against sticky threads.

His trap had caught something.

A second shriek joined the first.

Two workers—tangled together, compounding each other’s entrapment.

Their struggles only wound the silk tighter.

Good.

That would buy him time.

The others behind them would have to chew through or find another route.
