Ruel’s legs folded beneath him.

His body hit the cold stone with a controlled descent—belly flat against the ancient floor, claws curling inward, tail wrapping around his flank.

The void-cracks along his spine pulsed in slow, rhythmic waves—violet threaded with that new, deeper black.

Like a heartbeat made visible.

He was exhausted.

Not just physically—though the chain’s backlash had torn through him like a psychic wildfire.

Not just magically—though the fragment’s integration had drained his mana reserves like water through cracked stone.

Something deeper ached.

His soul felt stretched.

Thin in places.

The fragment sat inside him like a swallowed stone—dense, heavy, real in a way his own existence sometimes wasn’t.

He needed time.

The chamber was silent now.

Truly silent.

The chain’s death had removed its constant grinding whisper—that overlay of prayers and wards that had filled the null-zone like white noise.

Without it, Ruel could hear himself again.

The rasp of his breathing.

The faint click of his scales settling against stone.

The wet, quiet sound of his void-cracks knitting—slowly, so slowly—as his body attempted to repair what the seal had damaged.

The skeleton loomed above.

Patient.

The echo said nothing more.

It had offered rest, and now it gave it—withdrawing its attention like a tide pulling back from shore.

The null-zone remained oppressive, but without the chain’s active hostility, it felt less like a prison and more like a…

cave.

Deep.

Dark.

Cold.

But survivable.

Ruel pressed his snout against the stone.

Closed his eyes.

Behind his eyelids, the fragment’s memory replayed in fragments.

Not the overwhelming flood of the initial absorption—gentler now.

Echoes of echoes.

Wings.

A sky with no stars.

The taste of a kingdom’s borders dissolving on a tongue the size of a mountain.

He pushed it away.

Not yet.

He couldn’t process it while his body was this broken.

The memories would keep—they were part of him now.

Branded into his soul alongside his death-memories and his defiance and his hunger.

Instead, he focused on breathing.

On the slow pulse of his void-cracks.

On the faint, residual warmth still leaking from the broken chain’s remains—dead magic dissipating into the stone like heat from a cooling corpse.

Sleep came not as a choice but as a surrender.

TIME PASSES.

Ruel dreamed of nothing.

True nothing.

Not darkness—absence.

His body mended in the silence—cells knitting, scales re-hardening, the psychic wounds left by the chain’s invasion slowly scabbing over with something dark and new.

When he woke, the chamber was unchanged.

Timeless.

The skeleton above.

The two remaining seals—obelisk and sphere—glowing faintly in the periphery of his Tremorsense.

Waiting.

His body felt denser.

Settled.

The fragment no longer sat like a swallowed stone—it had integrated.

Woven itself into his architecture like thread into fabric.

Ruel rose.

Stretched.

His claws scraped stone—and the sound was different now.

Deeper.

Resonant.

Two seals remained.

Ruel rolled his jaw—testing.

The phantom pressure of the chain’s grip had faded.

Good.

He turned first toward the dead chain’s remains.

Scattered links of cold iron lay strewn across the stone—inert, purposeless, their runes reduced to meaningless scratches.

A graveyard of faith.

Perfect practice.

TESTING: DEVOUR — CONCEPT

Ruel approached the largest fragment—a section of three links still connected, half-buried in dust.

He lowered his snout.

Opened his jaws.

Not physically this time.

Something else opened.

A deeper aperture—behind his teeth, behind his throat.

In the space where his void-cracks met his soul.

He reached for the chain’s remnants—not the iron, but whatever ghost of enchantment still clung to the dead metal.

There was almost nothing left.

Wisps.

The faintest residue of warding-script—like smoke stains on a wall after a fire.

But his new sense could feel them.

Taste them from a distance.

Thin.

Bitter.

Stale.

He inhaled.

The residue peeled off the iron and drifted into his jaws like dust motes into a drain.

Tasteless.

Meaningless.

The magical equivalent of licking an empty plate.

But the mechanism worked.

He felt it—the way Devour: Concept interfaced with non-physical structures.

Like a second jaw operating on a different axis of reality.

It unraveled.

Found the seams in magical architecture and pulled threads loose.

Satisfied, he let the dead iron drop.

DEVOUR: CONCEPT — TESTED SUCCESSFULLY

No meaningful energy gained from dead remnants.

Mechanism confirmed functional.

Then Ruel turned toward the darkness.

Toward the skeleton.

Toward the echo.

“Which kills me faster,” he said.

Not a question, really.

A demand wrapped in practicality.

“The obelisk or the sphere.”

Silence.

Then—movement.

Not physical.

A shift in the null-zone’s pressure.

The echo’s attention returning like a vast eye opening.

< THE OBELISK WAS MADE BY THE ELVES.

>

A pause.

As if the word itself tasted of something old and bitter.

< THEY DID NOT USE FAITH.

THEY USED LAW.

THE OBELISK IS NOT A BELIEF.

IT IS A RULE WRITTEN IN TO THE WORLD’S STRUCTURE .

IT DOES NOT CARE WHAT YOU ARE.

IT SIMPLY STATES THAT I CAN NOT MOVE.

AND SO I CAN NOT.

>

The pressure shifted again—rotating, as if the echo was looking toward the other seal.

< THE SPHERE WAS MADE BY SOMETHING OLDER THAN ELVES.

>

A longer pause.

Heavier.

< I DO NOT KNOW WHAT.

IT DOES NOT BIND.

IT DOES NOT CONTAIN.

I T.

.

.

ERASES.

IT MAKES ME FORGET WHAT I AM.

PIECE BY PIECE .

I WAS VASTER ONCE.

THE SPHERE ATE THE REST.

>

Silence.

Then—something almost like respect:

< THE CHAIN WAS THE WEAKEST.

THE OBELISK WILL NOT BREAK TO PARADOX.

THE SPHERE WILL NOT BREAK TO ANYTHING I HAVE TRIED.
