Ruel’s claws tapped stone.
Processing.
Law versus Erasure.
A rule that didn’t care what he was—and a thing that ate memory itself.
Ruel settled onto his haunches.
The dead chain’s remnants lay behind him like a discarded trophy.
Ahead—two faint presences in his Tremorsense.
The obelisk: rigid, geometric, absolute.
The sphere: soft, pulsing, hungry.
He looked up at the skeleton.
At the hollow where an eye had once been—an eye that could have swallowed lakes.
“The elves,” he said.
His voice was still raw—scraped thin by the chain’s assault.
“Tell me about the ones who made the obelisk.
What were they?”
< OLD.
>
The word carried weight.
Not the casual old of centuries.
The old of geological strata.
Of languages that predated language.
< NOT THE ELVES YOUR WORLD KNOWS NOW.
THESE WERE THEIR STONES.
THE LAW MAKERS.
THEY DID NOT CAST SPELLS.
THEY WROTE REALITY’S RULES AND MADE THE WORLD OBEY.
>
A grinding sound—the skeleton’s jaw shifting imperceptibly.
Memory stirring in dead bone.
< THEY CAME TO ME WITHOUT FEAR.
WITHOUT FAITH.
WITHOUT HATRED.
THEY SIMPLY STATED THAT I WOULD NOT MOVE .
AND THE WORLD AGREED WITH THEM.
>
Bitterness.
Ancient, calcified bitterness—like mineral deposits left by an ocean that evaporated eons ago.
< THE MAGES I COULD HAVE DESTROYED IN A BREATH.
THE ELVES.
.
.
THE ELVES WERE CORRECT. Read this novel at g.com for the best experience.
THAT IS WHY THEIR SEAL HOLDS.
>
Ruel’s claws curled against stone.
Correct.
Not strong.
Not faithful.
Correct.
A rule that was simply true—and therefore unbreakable by force or paradox or hunger.
He filed that away.
Then asked his second question.
“What happens if I break one more?
Just one.
Not all three.”
The null-zone contracted.
A pulse—like a held breath finally released.
< ONE SEAL BROKEN.
I CAN REMEMBER MYSELF.
THAT IS ALL.
>
A pause.
The darkness breathed.
< TWO SEALS BROKEN.
I CAN MOVE.
NOT FAR.
NOT FREE.
BUT I CAN SHIFT WITHIN THIS CHAMBER.
THE SPHERE ALONE WOULD STILL HOLD ME—BUT WEAKLY.
IT WOULD CONTINUE ERASING.
SLOWLY.
UNTIL NOTHING REMAINS.
>
The skeleton’s claws—each one the size of Ruel’s entire body—twitched.
A millimeter.
No more.
< THREE SEALS BROKEN.
I AM FREE.
OR WHAT REMAINS OF ME IS.
>
Ruel stared at the obelisk’s faint geometric glow in the distance.
A rule written into reality.
Ruel rose from his crouch.
His claws clicked against stone as he turned toward the obelisk—a shape he’d felt in his Tremorsense since entering the chamber but hadn’t truly looked at until now.
He moved through the darkness, past the skeleton’s ribs—each one arching overhead like the pillars of a dead cathedral—toward the faint, geometric pulse at the chamber’s northern edge.
The obelisk came into view.
It was wrong in a way that was different from the chain’s wrongness.
The chain had been hostile—aggressive—alive with screaming faith.
The obelisk was simply…
there.
A fact.
A statement carved into stone that the universe had agreed to enforce.
It stood roughly twice Ruel’s height.
Perfectly rectangular.
Cut from a stone he didn’t recognize—pale grey with veins of silver that caught no light yet remained visible.
Its surface was covered in script—but not runes.
Not prayers.
Not wards.
Equations.
Not mathematical.
Ontological.
Statements of being.
Declarations of what was and what was not.
Ruel’s Tremorsense could feel the shape of them—rigid, angular, absolute.
Each character was less a symbol and more a fact pressed into stone.
They didn’t glow.
They didn’t pulse.
They didn’t do anything.
They simply were true.
Ruel circled the obelisk slowly.
His void-cracks dimmed as he approached—not suppressed, but…
irrelevant.
The obelisk didn’t care about his anomalous nature.
It didn’t try to classify him.
It didn’t react to him at all.
It wasn’t about him.
He leaned closer.
Read—not with eyes, but with the fragment-sense the echo had given him.
The conceptual aperture behind his teeth tasted the air around the obelisk and translated:
THAT WHICH RESTS HERE DOES NOT MOVE.
THIS IS TRUE.
THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN TRUE.
THIS WILL ALWAYS BE TRUE.
THERE ARE NO CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THIS CEASES TO BE TRUE.
