Ruel attempted to threaten a vastly superior creature through sheer defiance.

The great amber eye didn’t blink.

The pupil dilated slightly.Full novel: In My Eleventh Life, I Became a Dragon — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Then contracted.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Ruel’s hiss faded into a wet gurgle.

His body trembled.

Blood dripped from his torn wing-nub onto the black stone.

Then the creature made a sound.

It started deep in that enormous chest—a vibration more felt than heard.

It rose through layers of muscle and scale until it escaped the great throat as something utterly unexpected.

A huff.

Short.

Percussive.

Almost—

Amused.

The massive head lowered again.

Closer this time.

Close enough that Ruel could see the individual cracks in its ancient scales.

Close enough that one exhale from those cathedral nostrils washed over him like a furnace blast, pressing his broken body deeper into the crevice.

The slitted eye studied him with something that wasn’t hunger.

Wasn’t anger.

Wasn’t even curiosity, exactly.

It was recognition.

One predator acknowledging another.

However small.

However broken.

However absurd the comparison.

A rumble emerged.

Low.

Sustained.

The cavern wall vibrated against Ruel’s spine.

And then—

Words.

Not spoken.

Not heard.

Pressed directly into his mind like a branding iron against wet clay.

“…Foolish little ember.”

The voice was ancient beyond comprehension.

Heavy with centuries of silence.

Each syllable carried weight that threatened to crush Ruel’s consciousness entirely.

“You carry a fragment you did not earn.”

The eye narrowed.

“And you bare your teeth at me with a body already dying.”

A pause.

The rumbling shifted pitch.

“Interesting.”

The head withdrew.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The great body resettled.

But this time, the tail—the same tail that had shattered Ruel’s ribs—curled differently.

It swept aside, clearing a path between the boulders and the far wall.

Toward the tunnel.

The amber eye remained fixed on him.

Half-lidded.

Waiting.

“Go, little ember.

If you can.”

“That passage leads to the Ashen Warrens.

Vermin.

Fungus.

Creatures worthy of your…

current stature.”

A final huff.

Hot air.

Sulfur and something metallic.

“Grow.

Or die.

It matters little to me which.”

The eye began to close.

Ruel ignored the tunnel and limped farther into the shadows of this cavern, refusing to be herded by a beast he meant to surpass.

The amber eye snapped open.

Ruel dragged himself out of the crevice—away from the tunnel.

Away from the path he’d been given.

His broken ribs screamed.

His torn wing-nub left a dark smear against the stone.

Every movement was agony translated into motion.

But he moved deeper into the cavern.

Into the shadows behind the creature’s ledge.

Into the darkness where the magma-glow didn’t reach.

The rumble returned.

Different this time.

Harder.

The amusement stripped away.

“…You refuse.”

Not a question.

Ruel kept crawling.

Claws finding purchase.

Dragging his broken body one agonizing length at a time across the scorching stone.

Blood trailing behind him like a signature.

Ruel attempted to continue moving through severe pain with fractured ribs, internal bruising, and significant blood loss.

Ruel made it six meters.

Then his left foreleg buckled.

His chest hit the stone and the impact drove a fractured rib inward.

Something tore inside.

A wet, sucking sensation bloomed in his lung.

He collapsed.

His vision darkened at the edges.

The taste of blood thickened.

Each breath became a shallow, rattling wheeze—half air, half fluid.

DAMAGE SUSTAINED

Self-inflicted (movement with critical injuries) Damage: 12 HP

HP: 10 / 75 Health: 13%

Condition: Punctured lung.

Critical blood loss.

Consciousness fading.

The shadows swam around him.

The stone beneath his cheek was warm—almost comforting.

His body was shutting down.

He could feel it.

Systems failing one by one like lights going dark in an empty building.

But his eyes stayed open.

Fixed on the darkness ahead.

On whatever lay beyond this creature’s domain that he hadn’t been permitted to find.

Behind him, the great beast shifted.

The sound of scales against stone.

Closer.

A shadow fell over Ruel’s broken form—blocking even the faint red glow.

“Defiant to the point of self-destruction.”

The voice pressed against his fading consciousness.

“You would rather die in my shadow than live by my mercy.”

A long silence.

Ruel’s breath rattled.

Wet.

Weakening.

“…I have not seen such stupidity in a very long time.”

Another pause.

“Or such pride.”

The darkness was closing in.

Ruel’s claws twitched against the stone—still trying to drag forward.

Still moving.

Even now.

Even as his body failed entirely.

One claw.

Forward.

Scraping.

One more.

His vision narrowed to a single point of darkness ahead.

Then—nothing.

HP: 0 / 75

Health: 0%

The last thing Ruel felt was heat.

Immense.

All-encompassing.

Ruel forced a jagged breath through his punctured lung and growled, desperately trying to bite the shadow that loomed over him.

Ruel’s jaw opened.

Blood poured from between his teeth like a broken faucet.

His punctured lung spasmed—forcing a sound through his throat that was less growl and more death rattle.

A wet, bubbling snarl that sprayed dark ichor across the stone.

His neck craned upward.

Teeth snapping at the shadow above him.

At the darkness that smelled of ancient fire and eternity.

His fangs closed on nothing.

Then on something.

A single scale.

The edge of the creature’s forelimb, resting on the stone mere inches from Ruel’s broken body.

His tiny jaws clamped down with everything he had left—which was almost nothing.

His teeth scraped against a surface harder than diamond.

Not even a scratch.

But he bit.

He bit and held and refused to let go.

“…”

The ancient mind pressed against his—and found something unexpected.

Not regret.

Not the quiet acceptance of a dying animal.

Rage.

Pure.

Incandescent.

Bottomless.

The rage of a soul that had reached for a dragon star and been told no.

The rage of something small that refused—absolutely, fundamentally refused—to acknowledge its own smallness.

Ruel’s heart beat once more.

Then stopped.

His jaw slackened.

His tiny fangs slid off the impervious scale, leaving nothing—not even a mark.

His body went still.

The ember went dark.

DEATH

REINCARNATION SEQUENCE INITIATED

Cause of Death: Internal hemorrhaging.

Punctured lung.

Refusal to yield.

Life Duration: Approximately 4 minutes, 37 seconds.

Kills: 1 (Magma Beetle)

LIFE SUMMARY

Ruel lived for less than five minutes.

In that time, he hunted, killed, ate, challenged an apex predator, was broken, was offered mercy, refused it, and died with his teeth against the hide of something that could have unmade him with a thought.

It was, by any reasonable measure, the shortest and most pointless life imaginable.

It was also unforgettable.
