"Huh, today’s weather is not good. Why did I forget my umbrella?" I sighed as I looked at the sky, where heavy rain poured down alongside flashes of thunder.
Well, what can I say? I am as unlucky as always. My name is Noah Stone, a 29-year-old cashier.
I work from 5:00 a.m. to a freaking 1:00 a.m. I’m just a slave for those higher-ups. "If you don’t have connections or talent, you’ll always be at the bottom of the food chain," I muttered as I remembered those unpleasant nights I had to spend fixing their fucking mess.
Right now, I was at the bus stop, hiding from both the physical and mental assault of the rain. Of course, I wasn’t hoping that a bus would come at this hour, but it would be nice if the rain stopped.
After about thirty minutes that felt like an eternity, the rain finally calmed its wrath. I stood up and waited for the traffic light to turn red.
A minute later, the light turned red, and I started walking across the crosswalk as the drizzling rain splashed against me.
"Hiss, damn you. I know they’re just small drops, but at this rate, if I don’t get home soon enough, my laptop will get drenched. Tsk, I should buy a new bag."
I winced as the rain continued to fall.
While I was halfway across the crosswalk, I saw a bright light coming from my right side.
I turned to look.
The next thing I knew, I saw myself flying.

I couldn’t even feel my body hitting the asphalt. Everything went completely silent except for the muffled, rhythmic thudding of my own heartbeat echoing inside my ears.
For a second, it felt like I was suspended in midair, floating through the drizzling rain. The bright headlights that had blinded me warped into a distorted blur of white and yellow against the dark night sky.

The hard reality of the wet road slammed back into my senses.
The wind was knocked completely out of my lungs, leaving me gasping for air on the cold, damp pavement. The sharp smell of burning rubber and gasoline instantly filled the air, cutting through the fresh scent of rain.
A few feet away, the screech of brakes finally stopped.
A car door slammed open.
Hurried footsteps splashed frantically through the puddles toward me.
"Oh shit, is he dead?" I heard a panic-stricken voice echo from the sidewalk.
I tried to blink the rainwater—or maybe my blood—out of my eyes as I stared up at the traffic light above the intersection.
It was still glowing a steady, mocking red.
It was at that moment that the pain finally registered.
An unimaginable, soul-crushing pain.
’This is the end,’ I thought as I bled out, my life flashing before my eyes.
Through the blur of rain in my eyes, I saw the silhouette of a person standing over me.
They weren’t bending down to check my pulse.
They were pacing back and forth, clutching their head and letting out sharp, panicked breaths.
"H-help m-me..."
I painstakingly forced those words out, hoping I could still be saved.
"I’ve got you, buddy. Just stay with me," he whispered.
But the comforting warmth was entirely gone from his voice.
It was replaced by a low, mocking hiss.
He leaned in closer, his hands firmly gripping my shoulders.
To anyone watching from a distance, it looked like a good Samaritan trying to stabilize a dying victim.
But as his fingers dug into my bruised skin, he lowered his head until his breath brushed against my ear.
"You should have looked both ways."
A terrifying, quiet chuckle vibrated in his chest.
Before I could even react, he stood up smoothly and wiped the rainwater from his face.
He didn’t look around in panic.
He calmly walked back to the driver’s side of the massive truck, opened the door, and climbed inside.
I heard the heavy diesel engine roar to life.
’Fucking bastard.’

Don’t leave me here.
I screamed internally, hoping he would change his mind.
I didn’t want to die.
But no one came.
I lay there paralyzed, unable to move a single muscle.
Then the end began drawing near.
My vision started to blur.
I knew I was going to die.
’Whatever. It was a shitty life anyway.’
’Sayonara, bitches.’
Then there was nothing.
Nothing except endless darkness.

I was in slumber when a dazzling light hit my imaginary eyes. Then I remembered that night.
The night I died horribly without mercy. ’Fucking son of a bitch,’ I cursed as I remembered the man who took my life.
I finally looked at the light. This time it was different. Even though it was so bright, it didn’t make me look away. ’Well, it’s a good perk of not having eyes.’
Anyway, the light felt so attractive, like it wanted me to come closer.

Without waiting a moment, I willed myself to move toward the direction of the dazzling light. I could see it getting closer, meaning I was moving toward it.
’This is it. This is my chance for a new life, I hope.’
As I accelerated toward the light, if I had a mouth, it would have looked like that of a man who had been a virgin his entire life and was given unbearable beauty.
Finally, I got so close to the light that it felt like I touched it. And in the next second, the light swallowed me. I closed my eyes for a couple of moments.
After a while, I tried to open my eyes. The light was still there, but this time it was less bright.
I tried to look around and saw blurry figures. I closed and opened my eyes a couple of times to adjust.
After some time, I was finally able to see clearly. Around me were a couple of females wearing nurse clothes. But...
’What is this? They clearly look like humans. But they have horns, pointed ears, and I swear I saw a tail from one of them. I can’t clearly see because of my position,’ I thought, confused about the situation I was in.
"It is a boy. Congratulations, my lady."
I heard the voice of the old lady holding me.
’Phew, I dodged a gender-changing bullet. I am glad I am still a male,’ I sighed in relief, happy to be reborn as a male.
"Give him to me."
Behind me, I heard a tired young woman’s voice.
The old lady laid me carefully in her hands as she said, "Right away, My lady. Terra, go and tell the good news to the lord."
The young nurse, Terra, bowed and left the door.
Finally, I was laid in the hands of the tired woman—my mother in this life, I think.
