The transfer goes through clean — thirty-five thousand, gone from my balance in a blink, straight into the guild ledger. A confirmation ping flashes in my vision.
[Debt Cleared: $35,000 Paid in Full][Guild Contract: Terminated]
I hold my vision steady on him. "There. Paid. In full. Check your ledger if you don’t believe me."
He checks. I can see it in his face — the exact moment the number updates on whatever guild interface he’s got pulled up, and his expression doesn’t relax, it goes worse. Tighter. Angrier.
"This is some kind of trick," he snarls, yanking a blade off his hip, steel hissing free. "Illusion magic, mind control, I don’t care what it is — I soloed a rank C golem with this blade, you think some F-rank nobody and his little pet is gonna scare me?"
He lunges. Fast, faster than I could’ve reacted to an hour ago — but Viperess is already moving before he closes half the distance, black scales flickering like she’s barely touching the ground, shadow trailing off her like smoke shed from a fire.
"Master," she says, voice calm, already between us, "permission to end this."
"Not kill him," I say. "Just break what he’s got left. His ego. Leave the rest of him standing so he remembers this."
She smiles — actual smile, sharp at the edges — and the shadow at her feet lashes out ahead of her like a whip made of night.
It’s over before he even finishes his swing.
Viperess doesn’t so much fight him as unmake his confidence — shadow lashing out low, sweeping his legs before his blade’s even halfway through its arc, then a second strike, quick and controlled, knocking the sword clean out of his grip and sending him sprawling into the dirt on his back. The whole thing takes maybe two seconds. Two.
He tries to scramble up and she’s already there, one clawed foot pressed light against his chest, tail coiled loose and lazy like she’s not even trying.
The room’s dead silent. Every party member just staring, faces pale, nobody laughing now.
I watch it happen and something in my chest settles into place — a cold, clear kind of certainty. Even at E-rank, even with the stat boost I just got, I know for a fact I would’ve lost to this guy an hour ago. Would’ve lost bad. And Viperess just folded him up like it was nothing.
That’s when the real shape of it hits me. This isn’t just about paying off one debt or getting one lucky egg. This is a door. Every monster out there — every rank, every type — is a maiden waiting to be freed, waiting to be strength I can carry into the next gate. And every maiden bound to me stacks the wealth cap higher, stacks the power higher, builds something no guild leader’s ever gonna laugh at again.
Rich beyond anything I dreamed of. A harem of strength I actually earned, standing beside me instead of behind me carrying bags. All of it, starting from a slimy black egg somebody threw at me like garbage.
I almost laugh again, standing there in the dirt with my jaw still throbbing.
I look down at the leader, pinned under Viperess’s foot, all the fight gone out of him.
"We’re done here," I say. "Tell your guild the porter’s retired."
The door bangs open before I can take another step, and a girl storms in — sharp eyes, sharper posture, the kind of presence that fills a room even before she says a word. She scans the scene fast, and her face goes still the second she spots him.
"Derek?"
She stops dead. Him — pinned flat under a black-scaled maiden’s foot, blade still lying useless in the dirt beside him, the guy who’s soloed a rank C golem, the guy she’s probably bragged about to half the hunter circuit, looking about as pathetic as a man can look.
I recognize the name settling into place in my head even without the system telling me — Seraphina. The one hunter every guy in this scene’s been chasing and failing to impress for years. Hard to get, harder to please, and merciless about it. She’s rejected men stronger than Derek without blinking.
She’s stunned. Actually stunned, mouth slightly open, staring at him like she doesn’t know which part to react to first.
Viperess lifts her foot off him without a word, unbothered, tail flicking once like she’s already lost interest.
I don’t stop walking. Don’t even glance at Seraphina as I pass her in the doorway — no business explaining myself to a stranger, no business standing around while Derek scrapes his pride up off the floor. Viperess falls into step half a pace behind me, silent and easy, like she’s done this a thousand times already.
Right as we clear the threshold, the system chimes soft in the corner of my vision.
[New Quest Available][Quest: ??? ][View Details? Y/N]
I glance at it walking out into the cold evening air, Derek’s humiliation and Seraphina’s shock already behind me.
I open it up right there in the doorway.
[Quest Detected: The Proud Hunter’s Secret][Target: Seraphina’s Bonded Dragon — Feral, Rank Unknown][Objective: Tame the feral dragon. Evolve it into Maiden form. Secure Seraphina as sworn companion.][Reward: +100 EXP toward Wealth Multiplier scaling / Currency doubling speed +50% / Inherited Magic Perk from Dragon]
I read it twice, standing there with Viperess quiet beside me, and something about it settles into place like it was always gonna happen this way.
Behind me, Seraphina’s voice cuts through the room, cold and flat.
"We’re done."
I glance back despite myself. She’s standing over Derek, disappointment carved plain across her face — not anger, not even really surprise, just the tired look of someone confirming what she probably already knew deep down. He starts to say something, some excuse forming on his lips, but she’s already turning away from him before he gets a word out.
She walks toward the door. Toward us. Toward the exit, not even sparing him a last look.
I don’t say anything yet. Just watch her come, quest window still glowing quiet in the corner of my eye, Viperess’s tail brushing once against my leg like she already knows what I’m thinking.
