The entire office went silent. You could hear the faint crackle of the candles on the wall and the distant, muffled thuds of the two lovebirds still making the desk creak down the hallway.
Jared’s arrogant grin didn’t just vanish—his whole face froze like. He stared down at the glowing purple crystal, his breath hitching in his throat. He knew exactly what that rock was. It was the entire reason he had spent the last three weeks bribing board members and preparing a hostile takeover to kick Bae Suzy out of her director’s chair.
"The... the Shadow Wolf core," Jared whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he looked up. "How... where did you get this, Suzy? My men reported that a high-tier demon monster slaughtered the tracking squad and vanished into the fog!"
Bae Suzy didn’t look at Jared. Her deep black eyes were locked completely on me. She was leaning over her mahogany desk, her long black-and-silver hair falling over her shoulders, her low-cut leather armor shifting slightly as she took a slow, deep breath . Even in the middle of a corporate standoff, she looked absolutely devastating. Her full lips parted in pure shock, her gaze moving from the purple ring patterns pulsing around my neck down to the crystal on the floor.
"I told you, Jared," Suzy said, her voice smooth like velvet but colder than ice. "The Silver Crest Guild doesn’t lose inventory. We just have... temporary shipping delays."
Jared’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate sneer. He was a slim, wealthy corporate snake in a purple silk cloak, and he knew his entire coup was dead if Suzy handed that core to the board of directors tomorrow morning. A dangerous, wild light flared up in his eyes. He didn’t even notice me sitting on the leather armrest of the chair. He just lunged forward, his expensive gold rings glinting in the candlelight as his hand snatched down toward the floor to grab the crystal.
"This belongs to the guild storage facility!" Jared shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "You can’t prove this is the same asset!"
’Oh, no you don’t, buddy,’ I thought, my matte-black coils snapping tight. ’That’s my commission you’re touching.’
Pure instinct took over. I didn’t wait for a msg from the System. I dropped off the leather armchair like a falling piece of rope, zipped across the red rug using my Quick Dodge trait, and landed squarely on the back of his wrist. I unhinged my jaws and drove my two sharp fangs straight into the fleshy meat between his thumb and index finger.
"AGHH! A snake!" Jared screamed, violently flailing his arm through the air.
He threw his wrist sideways, knocking my three-foot body clear across the room. I hit the white wall , sliding down the polished wood into a heap of curtains. It hurt like hell, and my little snake ribs felt bruised, but the job was already done. My Neuro-Paralysis venom was already pumping into his bloodstream.
But then, something completely weird happened.
Because I had spent the last five years of my human life dealing with absolute corporate stress, screaming customers, and retail anxiety, my human soul signature was warped by pure, unadulterated annoyance. The System didn’t replace my venom—it reacted to my brain’s frantic thoughts as I watched Jared try to ruin my payout.
[System: Warning! Host’s extreme retail trauma and mental stress have infected the Tier 3 Neuro-Paralysis venom. Commencing accidental software mutation... Syncing data now.]
[Skill Upgraded: Neuro-Paralysis (Tier 3) ➔ The Karen Protocol (Tier 3 - Unique Mutation)]
[Effect: The toxic agent no longer just freezes the body. It completely short-circuits the target’s cognitive functions, replacing all rational thought with infinite, unhinged retail rage directed at the nearest authority figure.]
Jared stopped moving toward the core. He didn’t freeze like the Captain did on the front steps. Instead, his face turned a bright, furious shade of crimson. The veins in his neck popped out so hard they looked like thick blue worms under his skin. His eyes rolled back slightly, then snapped wide open, staring completely blankly at the ceiling.
The panic about his job vanished. He completely forgot about the multi-million gold wolf core. He forgot about Bae Suzy.
"WHERE IS THE OWNER OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT?!" Jared suddenly roared at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing off the luxury walls so loudly that a glass on the desk shattered. He violently kicked the leg of Suzy’s expensive desk, his boot splintering the wood. "THIS IS A TOTAL DISGRACE! THE TEMPERATURE IN THIS OFFICE IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE! I DEMAND TO SPEAK TO THE HIGH GODS OF ELORIA RIGHT NOW!"
Bae Suzy stood perfectly still behind her desk, her hand resting on the hilt of her silver runic dagger, staring at her rival with absolute, jaw-dropping shock. She had seen high-level mages cast curses before, but she had never seen a high-ranking guild official lose his mind over room temperature.
Jared turned around, his purple cloak flying wildly as he stomped over to her display shelf. He grabbed a priceless, ancient crystal vase.
"I am writing a terrible review for this entire district!" he screamed, completely lost in the venom-induced meltdown, before slamming the crystal vase directly over his own forehead.
Smash.
The vase shattered into a thousand glittering pieces. Jared’s eyes went completely blank, his knees buckled, and he collapsed face-first onto the plush red rug right next to the wolf core, knocking himself out cold. He lay there twitching silently, a little bit of drool leaking onto the carpet.
The office went completely silent again.
[System: Absolute masterpiece, Barry. You just completely liquidated his career, a five-thousand-gold corporate asset, and his remaining dignity in under ten seconds. Truly, customer service at its finest.]
I slithered out from under the velvet curtains, shaking the white plaster dust off my sleek, matte-black scales. I crawled slowly up the side of the mahogany desk, coiled my three-foot length neatly next to her expensive silver inkwell, and looked up at the director.
Bae Suzy slowly looked down at the unconscious, drooling body of Jared. Then she looked at the purple wolf core pulsing on the floor. Finally, she fixed her beautiful eyes straight on me. A slow, incredibly gorgeous, and entirely dangerous smile appearing on her face.
She leaned forward across the desk, her face coming just inches away from my tiny black nose. Her breath smelled faintly of sweet river mint, and from this close, hair looked like a halo.
"Barry," Suzy murmured, her voice dripping with amusement as she tapped her long, manicured fingernail against the wood right next to my tail. "You really are a complete monster. I love a contractor who knows how to handle a difficult client. Let’s talk about your payment."
