The echoing BONG of Vane’s heavy infantry crashing into the shadow-reinforced wall reverberated across the iron-plated plaza.

Ten armored guards tumbled backward onto the cold iron floor in a tangled heap of bruised limbs, clanking steel shields, and scattered spears. The kinetic shockwave, absorbed and elastically dispersed by the dark charcoal granite, had completely neutralized their charge without Arthur lifting a finger to strike them.

Lord Vane froze on the iron walkway of his massive two-hundred-and-fifty-step Iron-Fang Bastion. His eyes bulged in utter disbelief as he stared at his groaning vanguard.Full novel: Infinite Universe Lord: Awakening Beyond the Cosmos — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"What kind of stone is that?!" Vane bellowed, his face turning a mottled shade of crimson. He gripped the hilt of his heavy broadsword so tightly his knuckles turned white. "That wall should have shattered into dust under a standard infantry impact! Tear it down! Use the heavy breaker ram! Bring up the iron catapults!"

Before Vane’s secondary troops could scramble forward to obey his frantic commands, a sharp, concussive BOOM echoed across the eastern sector of the battlefield.

SCREEECH—CRACK!

A column of dark gray smoke and flying dirt billowed into the purple void sky from Sector Eight, Universe 102.

Arthur didn’t need to look at the regional map to know what had happened. That explosion was the exact signal he and Elian had coordinated through their shared defense grid. Vane’s eastern raiding party, expecting an easy snack from a tiny dirt island with zero defenses, had marched right into Elian’s traps.

Up in the trading post office, the communication slate flashed brightly, pinging with rapid updates from Elian’s frontline sensors:

[ Shared Defense Grid Update ][ Sector 102: Vanguard Trap Triggered Successfully ][ Glass powder dispersion operational. Enemy infantry mobility reduced by 85%. Wooden stake perimeter holding firm. ]

Arthur stood atop his southern granite wall, his boots firmly planted on the dark charcoal stone. He gripped the handle of his dented metal dagger, a calm, razor-sharp focus settling over his features.

Vane whipped his head around toward the eastern horizon, cursing loudly as he realized his forces were being split and dismantled on two fronts simultaneously.

"Ignorant whelp!" Vane roared, pointing his broadsword straight at Arthur’s chest. "You think a few clever tricks on the east side are going to save your pebble from my main artillery? Fire the catapults! Level his entire island to bedrock!"

Along the rear platforms of the Iron-Fang Bastion, two massive iron catapults cranked open with a deafening, metallic screech. Heavy stone boulders wrapped in flaming oil were hoisted into the wooden slings, pulled back by powerful winches operated by four-armed mercenaries.

The air grew instantly hot as the burning boulders prepared to launch.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. He knew the shadow-reinforced wall could absorb kinetic force, but sustained thermal bombardment from heavy siege catapults would eventually test the limits of even a core-upgraded granite barrier. He couldn’t just stand there and take a beating.

He had to execute step two of his playbook.

Arthur reached down to the base of the wall, where a small, recessed stone slot housed the Shadow Core he had integrated earlier. He pressed his palm against the core slot and channeled his willpower into the system interface.

Activate: Shadow Veil.

For a fraction of a second, the air around Arthur’s sixty-step island shimmered like heated glass.

Then, an impenetrable wave of thick, inky darkness rolled outward from the granite walls. It wasn’t ordinary smoke or fog; it was a dense, light-absorbing veil that completely swallowed the island, hiding every structure, every fence, and every inch of stone from external vision and mechanical sensors.

Across the boundary line, the automated targeting lenses of Vane’s iron catapults suddenly flickered and went blank.

"Target lost! Target lost!" shouted one of the mercenary operators on Vane’s wall, frantically tapping his control panel. "Sir, the anomaly is gone! We can’t lock coordinates on their position!"

Vane stepped forward, his eyes wide with frustration as he stared into the swirling wall of absolute darkness where Arthur’s island had stood just a second before.

"Fire anyway!" Vane screamed over the hum of the void. "Launch blind into the center! Don’t let him hide!"

THUMP! WHOOSH!

The heavy iron winches released. Two massive flaming boulders launched through the air in a high, fiery arc, plunging straight into the pitch-black veil covering Arthur’s territory.

BOOM! BOOM!

The impacts shook the ground, sending geysers of sparks and pulverized stone flying into the dark air. But because the island was completely veiled, the catapult operators had miscalculated by four full steps. Both boulders smashed harmlessly into an empty patch of stone near the center well, missing the trading post and the walls entirely.

Inside the safety of the Shadow Veil, Arthur stood completely undisturbed. The dark mist parted around him like a gentle breeze, leaving his vision crystal clear.

He glanced at his communication slate. The tactical files he had stolen from Vane’s captured spider-probe were glowing brightly on the screen, highlighting a critical vulnerability:

[ Iron-Fang Bastion Thermal Shield Blind Spot ][ Location: Northwestern Power Relay (Sector 4, Sub-Level 2) ][ Status: Uncalibrated power relay due to deferred maintenance. Susceptible to physical kinetic feedback. ]

Vane was pouring all his manpower and attention into the southern wall and the eastern flank, leaving his own fortress’s northwestern power core completely unguarded.

Arthur smiled. It was time to take the fight to the raider lord’s backyard.

He didn’t need an army of twenty guards or an iron battleship. He had agility, surprise, and a precise map of his enemy’s weakest point.

Arthur turned away from the southern wall, running swiftly across the dark granite floor of his territory. He bypassed the automatic water collector—which continued its steady, reliable rhythm, clank, whir, click, filling the wooden barrel—and sprinted toward the northwestern corner of his island where the newly merged iron plating of Iron-Fang Bastion met his stone perimeter.

Because the spatial merge had fused the two territories together, the physical boundary between Arthur’s sixty-step island and Vane’s two-hundred-and-fifty-step fortress was now a seamless seam of stone and metal.

Arthur slipped into a narrow maintenance hatch located right at the junction point—a service tunnel that Vane’s scout reports had conveniently failed to secure.

The tunnel was dark, smelling of hot copper wire, grease, and burning oil. Dim red emergency lights flickered along the low ceiling, casting long, jittery shadows across the metal walls.

Arthur crouched low, his boots making barely a whisper against the grated steel floor. He kept his right hand resting securely on the handle of his dented metal dagger, his eyes scanning every corner for patrolling guards or automated defense turrets.

Thanks to the stolen schematic files, he knew exactly where to go.

Left at the primary junction, down three flights of ladder steps, and straight through the steam valve corridor.

He moved with quiet, practiced efficiency. He wasn’t a reckless brawler like Marcus, nor was he an arrogant tyrant like Vane. Arthur was a strategist who understood that in the infinite universes, survival belonged to those who paid attention to the details everyone else ignored.

As he rounded a corner near the sub-level power core, he heard the muffled sound of two guards talking near a heavy steel door.

"...can you believe the boss is making us pull double shifts for this little rock?" the first guard grumbled, his voice echoing slightly in the metal hallway. "It’s just an orphan with a thirty-step—well, sixty-step island now. Why are we bringing out the heavy catapults?"

"Orders are orders," the second guard replied, leaning against the wall. "Vane lost a scout probe yesterday, and his ego is bruised. He wants the boy’s territory wiped off the map before the regional council reviews the sector alignments tomorrow."

Arthur crept closer, melting into the shadows beneath a flickering red emergency light. He waited silently until the second guard turned his back to grab a flask of water from a small metal crate.

Moving like a coiled spring, Arthur darted out of the shadows. He closed the distance in two silent strides, slipping behind the first guard. Before the guard could even draw his weapon, Arthur pressed the heavy pommel of his metal dagger firmly against the back of the guard’s neck with precise pressure.

The guard let out a soft gasp, his eyes rolling back as he slumped unconscious onto the steel grating.

The second guard whipped around, dropping his water flask with a loud crash. "Hey! What—"

Before the guard could finish his sentence, Arthur swept his leg out in a low, sharp kick, striking the back of the guard’s knee joint—the exact same unarmored weak spot he had used in the bazaar colosseum.

The guard’s leg buckled instantly. With a heavy grunt, he crashed forward, and Arthur brought his hand down in a swift chop to the back of his neck, putting him out cold as well.

Arthur exhaled a steady breath, stepping over the two unconscious guards. He didn’t harm them beyond what was necessary; he wasn’t a murderer. He was simply dismantling an empire from the inside out.

Right in front of him stood the massive steel door leading to the Northwestern Power Relay.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, specialized override keycard he had salvaged from the disabled spider-probe earlier. He slid the keycard into the electronic slot beside the door.

Bzzzt—Green light.

The heavy steel door slid open with a smooth, pneumatic hiss, revealing a large, circular chamber filled with humming generators, thick bundles of copper cables, and a glowing blue core floating in the center of a magnetic ring.

This was the uncalibrated power relay that supplied energy to Vane’s southern wall and iron catapults.

Arthur stepped into the chamber, walking right up to the central control console. The holographic display flickered with system warnings and power distribution graphs.

He didn’t need to hack complex encryption codes or trigger self-destruct sequences. According to the spider-probe’s data files, all he had to do was manually overload the thermal dampener.

Arthur reached for the large red manual lever on the side of the console and pulled it down as hard as he could.

CLACK!

The entire room shuddered violently. The humming generators let out a high-pitched, piercing whine as power surged through the cables in the wrong direction. The floating blue core in the center of the ring turned a bright, unstable shade of amber, then hot crimson.

[ WARNING: THERMAL OVERLOAD DETECTED ][ Power Relay Sector 4 shutting down for emergency coolant purge in 10 seconds... ]

Arthur didn’t wait around to watch the fireworks. He turned on his heel and sprinted out of the chamber, back down the steel corridor, slipping through the maintenance hatch just as the heavy steel door automatically sealed shut behind him.

He scrambled back out into the cool, dark mist of the Shadow Veil covering his own territory.

As soon as he stepped foot back on his sixty-step granite island, a massive explosion rocked the southern boundary line.

KABOOM!

Across the iron-plated plaza of Iron-Fang Bastion, the twin iron catapults that had been hurling boulders at Arthur’s wall suddenly ground to a violent halt. Thick plumes of black smoke erupted from the rear platforms as the power surge from the northwestern relay fried their winch systems and melted their gearboxes.

"What happened?!" Vane screamed, stumbling backward on his own walkway as the control panels exploded in a shower of sparks. "Report! What just blew up?!"

"Sir! The northwestern power relay has suffered a catastrophic thermal overload!" a terrified mercenary shouted over the comms. "All southern defensive turrets and catapults are offline! We have no power!"

Vane’s face turned the color of ash. He stared across the smoky void toward the swirling bank of dark mist where Arthur’s island sat safely hidden. For the first time since the alignment began, real, genuine fear flickered in the veteran raider’s eyes.

"That... that’s impossible," Vane muttered, gripping the metal railing with trembling hands. "He’s just an orphan. How did he breach my core?"

Inside the safety of the Shadow Veil, Arthur stood near the edge of his granite wall, wiping a smudge of soot from his jacket sleeve. He pulled his communication slate from his pocket and checked the regional map.

The eastern front was completely secured. Elian’s glass-powder trenches and wooden stake perimeters had successfully routed Vane’s secondary raiding party, and Elian’s status indicator was glowing in a steady, triumphant green.

On the southern front, Vane’s main artillery was crippled, his vanguard was battered, and his command structure was in total disarray.

A golden holographic notification window popped up in front of Arthur, shining brightly in the dark mist:

[ Skirmish Milestone Achieved: Strategic Defense of Sector Seven ][ Unlocked Reward: Fifty Pure Energy Crystals, Regional Trade Rights Expansion, and Access to Veteran-Tier Territory Blueprint Archive. ]

Arthur tapped the screen to claim the reward. As the energy crystals dissolved into the gray stone floor beneath his boots, another wave of warm, pulsing energy rippled across his island.

RUMBLE...

The granite walls expanded outward once more, growing from sixty steps to a massive eighty steps by eighty steps!

Along with the expansion, a second small structure appeared near the center of the island—a secure vault for storing advanced blueprints and rare items.

Arthur let out a long, slow breath, feeling the heavy tension leave his shoulders. He walked over to the stone well, scooped up a cup of the sparkling starlight water, and drank it down. The cool liquid refreshed him instantly.

He looked out across the smoky void toward Iron-Fang Bastion. The raider lord was currently screaming orders at his panic-stricken crew, trying desperately to salvage whatever dignity he had left.

Arthur knew Vane wouldn’t give up permanently—raiders rarely did. But the message had been delivered loud and clear. Territory #404 wasn’t an easy snack for hungry lords. It was a fortress forged by grit, intellect, and an unbreakable will to survive.

Arthur walked back toward the trading post office, stepping inside and closing the door behind him. The room was quiet, warm, and safe.

He sat down in the leather chair, placed his dented metal dagger gently on the oak desk, and opened his communication slate to send a final victory report to his ally.

"The southern artillery is down, Elian," Arthur typed calmly, a satisfied smile resting on his lips. "The eastern front is clear. We survived the first wave of the alignment."

It took only a few seconds for Elian’s joyful reply to ping back across the screen:

[ Incoming Message from Lord Elian ][ Text: We did it, Arthur! We actually did it! You’re a legend! ]

Arthur chuckled softly, resting his hands behind his head as he looked out the window at the peaceful purple stars twinkling in the endless sky.

Let the universe bring whatever trials it wanted next. He was ready.
