Su Mingyue put the bankbook and the sixty yuan into her space. After all, her space was far safer than this wooden chest.
After putting the money away, Su Mingyue pondered for a moment. It seemed that she would definitely have to go into the mountains to hunt some game and secretly sell it in order to get money or food. Otherwise, with the sixty yuan she currently had, the amount of food she could buy would not even be enough to feed herself!
After carefully putting away the bankbook and the few crumpled bills, Su Mingyue began methodically tidying up the chest. She picked up each item and returned it to its original place.
By the time she put the last item back, the sky outside had already been covered in dusk, with only a faint afterglow filtering through the window into the room. Su Mingyue stood up and slowly walked toward the somewhat old cabinet in the corner of the main room.
She skillfully took a small key from the place where the keys were kept and inserted it into the slightly rusty lock on the cabinet. With a gentle twist, there was a crisp click, and the lock opened.
Su Mingyue reached into the cabinet and felt around for a while before finally finding the basin. She carefully took it out and placed it on the table nearby. Inside the basin was the remaining chicken.
Looking at the meat in front of her, Su Mingyue thought to herself, “I wonder if eating this meat will increase my mental power?”
With that expectation in mind, she picked up the basin and turned toward the kitchen.
Just as she stepped into the kitchen, she suddenly heard the sound of the front door opening. Immediately afterward, Grandma Su’s familiar voice and the slightly childish voice of Su Qingfeng reached her ears. The two of them chatted as they walked toward the kitchen.
Grandma Su entered the kitchen and immediately spotted Su Mingyue standing by the stove. She paused slightly, a hint of surprise appearing on her face, and then asked with concern, “Mingyue, did Grandma come back too late? Are you hungry? Grandma will make some food right away!”
Su Mingyue held up the chicken in her hands for Grandma Su to see and said, “I want to eat meat! Let’s have meat again tonight!”
Grandma Su looked at her with a deeply pained expression and frowned. “Oh, Mingyue, but… we already had meat for lunch! Let’s save what’s left for you to eat tomorrow. How can we eat meat for two meals in one day? Even the landlords in the old days didn’t eat like this!”
Su Mingyue raised her hand and gently pointed at the wound on her forehead. “Grandma, it hurts here! I want to nourish myself.”
As soon as Su Qingfeng heard his sister say that her wound hurt, he immediately panicked and asked anxiously, “Sis, why is your wound hurting again? It looked so much better this morning! How come it suddenly hurts again? Does it hurt badly?
“Grandma, since my sister wants to eat it, just make it for her! There really isn’t much difference between eating it today or tomorrow, is there? Besides, this meat was originally meant to help my sister recover. Tonight, don’t put any meat in my bowl. Give all of it to my sister so she can get better sooner and recover quickly!”
Grandma Su looked at her granddaughter pointing at the wound on her forehead, then glanced at her little grandson standing beside her with tears in his eyes, looking so pitiful. She sighed and said, “All right, we’ll have meat again tonight. Do you still want chicken soup?”
Su Mingyue quickly nodded, indicating that she wanted chicken soup again that evening. Seeing his sister nod in agreement, Su Qingfeng immediately broke into a bright smile.
He turned to Grandma Su and obediently nodded as well, saying sweetly, “Grandma, we still want to drink your chicken soup. Your chicken soup is the best!”
Hearing her grandson’s praise, Grandma Su was instantly delighted. She smiled so broadly that her eyes narrowed into thin slits.
She reached out and lightly tapped her finger in the air toward Su Qingfeng’s little head, pretending to scold him. “Oh, you really are the one with the sweetest mouth! But meat tastes good no matter who cooks it. After all, it’s meat!”
With that, she took the basin full of ingredients from Su Mingyue’s hands. Looking at her with affection and concern, she said, “Girl, you still have a wound on your head. If it hurts, don’t force yourself to endure it. Go back to your room and lie down and get some proper rest! Once the food is ready, Grandma will bring it to you.”
Su Mingyue shook her head and replied softly, “Grandma, I don’t want to lie down anymore. I’ll just stay here for a while. Besides, I’d like to learn how to stew meat from you while I’m here.”
Su Mingyue was thinking that she would certainly need to go into the mountains to hunt for food quite often in the future. She did not want to trouble Grandma Su by making her come all the way over every time just to cook for them. And when it came to her hunting activities, the fewer people who knew about them, the better!
So she felt that since she had the opportunity now, she might as well learn some cooking skills properly. More importantly, once she knew how to cook, she could make whatever she wanted to eat herself. Why not?
The original owner’s memories did contain some knowledge of cooking, but there was nothing about preparing meat dishes. Even if there had been, she had never personally cooked meat before. So although she knew what ingredients to put in, she had no idea how much of each ingredient to use.
That was precisely what she needed to learn—the proper quantities. And there was no need to doubt her eyesight. After all, she was a War God!
After eating, the grandmother and grandson pair washed up and went to bed.
That night.
Grandma Su was sleeping soundly when Su Mingyue opened her eyes. She released her mental power and sensed it carefully. Sure enough, her mental power was slightly stronger than it had been that afternoon.
So she had found the method of increasing her mental power.
Sure enough, eating meat could increase her mental power. Although she had no idea what the principle behind it was, Su Mingyue’s eyes were still filled with delight. Now, all that remained was to put her plan into action.
She decided that once the wound on her head had healed a little more, she would go into the mountains and start hunting.
Another two days passed like this.
Over those two days, the wound on Su Mingyue’s head had stopped hurting, and it had gradually begun to form a scab. Grandma Su stayed at Su Mingyue’s house for another day. Once she was certain that Su Mingyue had recovered considerably, she returned to the old family home.
Thus, only the brother and sister remained at Su Mingyue’s house once again.
Her aunt, Zhou Hehua, occasionally came over to bring the siblings some food. At other times, Su Mingyue relied on the original owner’s memories to cook for them herself. To Su Mingyue, this was quite a novel experience.
One day, after finishing her meal, Su Mingyue handed the cleaning-up chores over to Su Qingfeng, then put a basket on her back and headed into the mountains.
Along the way, she ran into quite a few people. When they saw Su Mingyue, they all greeted her and asked whether her injury had gotten better.
Su Mingyue answered each of them, “Much better!”
