She hadn’t written anything.
She didn’t need to.
Kai stood at the sink and washed the bowls and looked at the thin afternoon light coming through the window.
’Wednesday,’ he thought.
He was already looking forward to it more than he expected.
『 Investment logged. 』 『 ▸ Restaurant reservation — Shira Voss / Mira Elys: 0 coins spent (pending actual meal). 』 『 ▸ Emotional investment: deliberate act of normalcy. Treating both wives as people who deserve a good afternoon, not patients who deserve management. 』 『 ▸ Return: pending. 』
『 Analyst note: Shira Voss asked what time. 』 『 She is coming. 』 『 Mira Elys stopped beside you in the hallway. 』 『 She is coming too. 』 『 Both of them said yes without saying yes. 』 『 Host should note this. It means something. 』
Kai dried the last bowl and put it away.
He noted it.
He was smiling slightly and there was nobody in the kitchen to see it.
======================
That evening he heard Shira’s door open at nine.
Not the sound of her going to the bathroom. The specific sound of her wheelchair moving slowly down the hallway toward the living room.
He sat up on the couch.
Shira appeared in the doorway. She had changed into her sleeping clothes — loose trousers, a soft jacket over the top. Her braces were off for the night. Her arms rested in her lap.
She looked at him sitting on the couch.
He looked at her.
Neither of them said anything for a moment.
"I couldn’t sleep," Shira said.
"Okay," Kai said. He moved to the far end of the couch and left the middle section open — not an invitation exactly, just space. The way you leave a door ajar.
Shira wheeled herself to the edge of the couch and stopped.
She looked at the space he’d made.
Then she looked at the window.
"The pain isn’t bad tonight," she said. "Just. Awake."
"Me too," Kai said.
Another silence. The city outside doing its quiet late-night thing. A distant sound from somewhere in the building. The particular quality of an apartment at ten o’clock when nothing needs doing and there’s nowhere to be.
"The clinic," Shira said after a while.
"Friday," Kai said.
"Creston," Shira said. "I looked it up. Their neurological recovery program for Gift-channel injuries." A pause. "The doctors at my previous clinic said that program existed but that it wasn’t — they said the likelihood of meaningful recovery for my injury type was low."
"Creston’s doctors might say something different," Kai said. "Or they might say the same thing. Either way you’ll know more than you do now."
Shira looked at the window.
"And if they say the same thing," Shira said.
"Then we figure out what comes after that," Kai said. "Together."
The word landed the same way it always did when he used it — quietly, without drama, like a fact being stated.
Shira was quiet for a long time.
"You keep saying that," Shira said. "Together."
"Because it’s accurate," Kai said.
She looked at him then. The uncertain look again — less uncertain than it used to be. Something in it had shifted over five days from hunting for the angle to something closer to simply — looking.
"Why," Shira said. "We were handed to each other. You didn’t choose this either."
Kai thought about that honestly.
"No," he said. "I didn’t choose it. But I’m here. And you’re here. And Mira’s here. And that’s what we have." He looked at the window. "I’d rather make something of it than spend the energy being angry about it."
Shira looked at him for another moment.
Then she looked at the window too.
They sat like that for a while — him on the couch, her in the wheelchair beside it — not saying anything, not needing to. The city outside moving through its indifferent rhythms.
After about twenty minutes Shira’s head tilted slightly toward her shoulder. Her breathing slowed.
She had fallen asleep in her wheelchair.
Kai looked at her for a moment.
Then he stood up carefully, retrieved the spare blanket from the cabinet, and draped it over her without waking her.
He sat back down on the couch.
He pressed his palm to the armrest.
Through the wall — Mira. Asleep. Her rhythm deep and even, which was different from last night and the night before.
She was sleeping properly for the first time.
He sat with both rhythms for a while.
’Wednesday,’ he thought. ’Two more days.’
『 Evening investment logged. 』 『 ▸ Emotional: non-intrusive presence during Shira Voss’s insomnia episode. Honest conversation. Blanket — 0 coins, high sincerity. 』 『 ▸ Bond Level update — Shira Voss: 1.0 / 10. 』
『 BOND LEVEL 1 REACHED — SHIRA VOSS. 』
『 Return incoming. 』 『 Prepare yourself, Host. 』
Kai opened one eye.
’Now?’ he thought.
『 Now. 』
It started in his chest.
Not pain , something more like pressure, building from somewhere deep and spreading outward through his ribs and into his arms and his hands and the back of his neck. Warm and dense and expanding, like something that had been compressed for a long time was finally being given room.
He sat up.
His hands were glowing faintly.
Not brightly , just a thin luminescence at the edges of his fingers, barely visible in the dark apartment. He turned them over and looked at them.
The glow pulsed once. Twice.
Then it settled into something steadier , not light exactly, more like heat that had a color.
New system text appeared.
