Chapter 14 | Gift Awakening

Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate

Kai stared at that last line for a very long time.

Ninety-nine million, two hundred and ninety-five thousand, three hundred and forty-seven coins.

He put his phone face-down.

He picked it up.

Same number.

He closed the app.

He opened it.

Same number.

He put the phone on the floor and looked at his hands. The faint glow had faded but he could still feel it , something different in them now. Denser. Like his body had been quietly upgraded while he was sitting on a couch watching his wife fall asleep.

He made a fist carefully.

He felt the air around his knuckles shift — just slightly, just for a second — like pressure moving outward from his hand.

Gale Strike. Level 1.

From her.

He looked at Shira sleeping in her wheelchair with the blanket over her shoulders.

’This came from you,’ he thought quietly. ’Everything I just became — it came from you.’

Something settled in his chest that was too large and too quiet to be called any one thing.

He pressed his palm to the armrest.

Her rhythm. Steady and sleeping.

’I’ve got you,’ he thought.

He meant it more than he had the first time he’d thought it.

He lay back down and looked at the ceiling.

Ninety-nine million coins.

A faint echo of her Gift in his hands.

And Shira Voss asleep in his living room with a blanket over her shoulders because she couldn’t sleep and hadn’t known where else to go.

He closed his eyes.

Wednesday, he thought.

=====

Kai was already awake when Shira stirred.

He’d been up since five-thirty, sitting on the far end of the couch with his tea, watching the early light come through the curtain gap and thinking about nothing in particular. The kind of morning that doesn’t ask anything of you yet.

He heard the small sound of Shira returning to consciousness — a breath that changed quality, the slight shift of weight in the wheelchair.

Then silence.

The specific silence of someone realizing where they are and rapidly processing how they feel about it.

Kai looked at his tea.

Shira said nothing.

He said nothing.

After about thirty seconds Shira said, in a voice that was fully composed and gave absolutely nothing away: "Good morning."

"Morning," Kai said. "Tea’s still hot. I made extra."

Another pause.

"Fine," Shira said.

He got up and poured a second cup and brought it over and set it within her reach on the side table without looking at her face directly. She took it without comment. He sat back down on his end of the couch.

They drank their tea.

Neither of them mentioned the blanket folded neatly across her lap.

Neither of them mentioned that she had fallen asleep in his living room.

Neither of them mentioned any of it.

It was, Kai thought, one of the more comfortable silences they’d had so far.

’Progress,’ he thought.

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 1.0 / 10. Holding steady. 』 『 The system notes that you are both pretending very hard right now. 』 『 It is working. Continue. 』

Kai drank his tea.

Mira came out at six forty-five.

She navigated the hallway to the living room doorway and stopped. Her head tilted slightly — taking in the room through sound and air pressure the way she did when she was reading a space.

She tilted it a little more.

She turned toward where Shira’s wheelchair was positioned.

Then she turned toward where Kai was sitting on the couch.

She reached for her marker.

She wrote something and held it up.

Why are you both in the living room at six forty-five in the morning.

"Couldn’t sleep," Kai said.

"Same," Shira said, at exactly the same moment.

Mira lowered the board.

She looked at both of them for exactly three seconds.

Then she wrote one more thing, held it up in Kai’s general direction, and turned around and went back to her room.

The board said: Sure.

Shira made a sound into her tea cup that was not quite a laugh but was in the same neighborhood as one.

Kai looked at his tea.

’She knew immediately,’ he thought.

『 Mira Elys has been awake since five a.m. and heard everything including the blanket being unfolded. 』 『 She knows. 』

Kai looked at the hallway where Mira had disappeared.

He was almost certain he’d heard her laughing quietly on the other side of her door.

After breakfast the deliveries came.

Two packages. Kai signed for both of them and brought them inside and set each one outside the relevant door without knocking.

Then he went to the kitchen and found things to do.

He reorganized the cabinet. He wiped down the counter. He made a grocery list for the week with the particular focus of someone who was absolutely not listening to what was happening on the other side of two closed doors.

From Shira’s room — silence. Then the sound of a box being opened carefully. Then a longer silence.

From Mira’s room — the sound of the box. Then nothing for a long time. Then, very faintly, the sound of movement — deliberate, methodical, different from her usual careful navigation.

Kai wiped the counter a second time.

He heard Mira’s door open.

He didn’t turn around.

The sound of the cane on the hallway floor was new — a light, precise tap with each step. Steady. Confident in a way that was different from the careful wall-trailing of the past five days. She was mapping the space properly now, the cane giving her information two steps ahead instead of half a step behind.

The tapping stopped at the kitchen doorway.

Kai turned around.

Mira stood in the doorway with the cane held correctly, posture straight, silver-white hair loose around her shoulders. She looked different. Not in any way he could point to specifically. Just different. Like something that had been slightly contracted had expanded by one degree.

She held up her whiteboard.

I can find my own way now.

Not coldly. Just a statement. Underneath it, something that might have been the beginning of relief.
