From the high battlements of the bone-arch gate, Valen looked out over the barren approach to The Bone-Grave.

The evening wind blew cold and sharp, carrying the distant clatter of boots and the harsh, gloating laughter of fifty armed men.

[Friendly Forces: 12 Militia, 30 Laborers, 1 System Overseer, 1 Grafted Retainer]

[Hostile Forces: 52 Dust-Skull Bandits (Led by Ex-Captain Kael)]

[Terrain Advantage: High Ground / Natural Chokepoint (Bone-Pass)]

[Primary Objective: Decimate Attacking Force & Secure Penal Labor Pool]

Through his System vision, the battlefield was mapped in glowing lines of red and blue.

The narrow ravine leading to the settlement’s main gate formed a natural funnel—a classic kill-zone.

On Earth, Valen had optimized supply chains to funnel inventory with maximum speed; now, he applied the exact same principles to human target distribution.

He turned to his core team.

“Offensive capability is low in open combat,” Valen said, his voice level and clinical.

“Therefore, we force them into a chokepoint where superior numbers become a liability rather than an asset.

We don’t trade blows with them—we harvest them.”

Defensive & Strategic Preparations

The Primary Funnel: Marcus and ten militia members blocked the side trails with heavy bone-rubble, leaving only a six-foot-wide gap through the main bone-archway.

The Ignition Line: Karen had laid hidden gut-hoses along the path, soaking the dirt floor of the ravine with volatile, unrefined marrow-oil.

The Marrow-Engine (Heavy Artillery): Atop the gatehouse, the newly constructed Marrow-Pump was pressurized and loaded with refined bile-casing charges, operated by Karen and three trained blacksmiths.

The Shock Vanguard: Marcus stood directly inside the gate breach, his newly grafted Ossified Bone-Shield Arm glinting under the twilight sky, serving as an impenetrable physical wall.

“Look at them!” Captain Kael’s booming voice echoed up the gorge.

He rode a mangled, two-headed draft beast, clad in stolen plate armor.

Behind him marched fifty ragged, weapon-toting brigands.

“The little lordling didn’t run!

He stayed to guard a pile of rotting bones and starving rat-eaters!”

The bandits roared with laughter, drawing rusted swords, iron maces, and crude crossbows.

“Hand over the marrow vaults, Lord Valen!” Kael shouted, pointing his broadsword toward the gatehouse.

“Do it now, and I’ll only kill half of your people.

Refuse, and I’ll feed your carcass to the Corpse-Ticks!”

Valen leaned over the stone rampart, his eyes glowing a faint, cold purple.

He didn’t offer a dramatic speech or negotiate.

He raised his right hand.

“Pressurize Valve Three,” Valen commanded quietly.

[Marrow-Pump Status: Overcharged]

[Pressure Gauge: 120 PSI]

[Target Zone: Ravine Sector 1]

“Charge!” Kael bellowed, waving his sword forward.

The fifty bandits surged into the narrow ravine, bottlenecking into a tight, packed mass as they rushed the open archway.

They were thirty yards away.

Twenty.

Ten.

“Ignite,” Valen said.

Karen slammed a brass lever down.

A high-pitched hiss screamed from the gatehouse nozzles, followed instantly by a deafening ROAR.

A thick jet of pressurized, liquid fire poured down into the gorge.

The marrow-soaked earth beneath the bandits’ feet burst into a sea of white-hot, inextinguishable flame.

[ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECT: MARROW-COMBUSTION]

[Hostile Casualties (Wave 1): 22 Neutralized]

Screams of terror echoed off the rock walls as the frontline of the bandit force was instantly engulfed.

The rear rank tried to fall back, but the narrow walls of the gorge blocked their escape, trapping them in a raging inferno of chemical fire.

“Break through the gate!” Kael screamed, his face blackened with soot as he forced his beast through the flames.

“Kill the pump operators!”

A dozen surviving, battle-hardened brigands scrambled out of the fire, charging through the bone-archway with raised axes.

Waiting for them on the other side was Marcus.

“For Lord Valen!” the old miner roared.

[Retainer Ability Triggered: Bone-Shield Rampart]

Marcus slammed his left arm forward.

The calcified bone-plates covering his forearm expanded outward with a metallic click, locking together to form a massive, six-foot tower shield of living Titan-bone.

The bandits’ blades struck the bone-shield with deafening clangs, leaving not even a scratch.

Before the attackers could recover from the impact, Marcus flexed his arm.

The bone ridges along his shield flared, detonating a kinetic shockwave that shattered the bandits’ wooden shields and threw them back onto the ground.

Marcus stepped forward, wielding a heavy iron pick in his right hand and his indestructible bone-shield in his left, driving back the survivors with ruthless efficiency.

Seeing his entire force dismantled in less than five minutes, Captain Kael panicked.

He turned his mount to flee, but a shadow dropped from the gatehouse above.

Valen landed gracefully on the stone path in front of Kael, his right hand pulsing with a blinding aura of violet System energy.

[Metabolic Pulse: Maximum Output]

[Targeting: Kael – Traitorous Captain]

Kael swung his broadsword in a desperate arc.

Valen didn’t dodge; he raised his System-infused palm and caught the steel blade mid-air.

The System’s biological resonance surged into the metal, heating it instantly to a cherry-red glow.

The steel shattered into brittle fragments.

Before Kael could react, Valen thrust his palm directly into Kael’s chest plate.

[Executing Neural Disruption]

A wave of biological feedback surged into Kael’s body.

The ex-captain gasped, his eyes rolling back as his muscles paralyzed, dumping him unceremoniously into the dirt at Valen’s feet.

Silence fell over the gorge, broken only by the crackle of residual fires and the moans of wounded bandits.

[BATTLE COMPLETE: VICTORY]

[Hostile Force Decimated: 34 Dead, 18 Captured]

[Friendly Losses: 0]

[Rewards Obtained:]

– 450 System Energy

– Settlement Morale: +30 (Current: 63/100 – Confident)

– Unlocked System Tech Tree Node: Tier 2 ‘Bio-Engineered Defense Grid’

Valen stood over the paralyzed Kael, looking down with cold, calculating eyes.

“P-please…” Kael choked out, terror replacing his previous arrogance.

“Mercy, My Lord…

I was desperate…”

“You aren’t being executed, Kael,” Valen said, turning his back on the traitor as Marcus and the militia moved in to bind the surviving captives with iron chains.

“Execution is a waste of labor.

You and your men just became the foundation of my new construction battalion.”

Valen looked toward the horizon, where the mountains opened up to the rest of the continent.

The Bone-Grave was no longer a penal colony—it was a fortress.
