The first solution Rei considered was disappearing.
It was also the worst one.
That irritated him.
Disappearing had a certain elegance in theory. Remove the variable. End the connection. Leave no route by which Satoru Gojo’s curiosity could be redirected, contained, exploited, or whatever other administrative verb adults preferred when they meant used without admitting use. Withdraw from preliminary instruction. Stop attending archive restoration. Stop standing beside Akiha. Stop giving Daigo opportunities to discover he was being carried like a badly wrapped message. Stop being present in rooms where people with clean hands and patient files might decide he was most valuable as a way to understand someone brighter.
Simple.
Clean.
Wrong.
Haruto let Rei explain it anyway.
That was a mercy and a cruelty, as most of Haruto’s better teaching habits were.
The family room had become a strategy room again. The notebook titled Joint Demonstration Risk Notes lay open beside the newer copied paragraph from classification 5-F. Sayuri had rewritten the relevant line in her own hand, because apparently some threats became more manageable once forced to pass through her brush.
5-F Provisional:
Observation subject whose relevance changes primarily through attention from a higher-value subject.
Recommended handling:
- avoid direct escalation unless threat increases independently
- preserve plausible mundane explanation
- monitor influence pathways
- evaluate whether higher-value subject’s attention can be redirected, contained, or exploited
Beneath it, Rei had written the System’s recommendation.
Prevent usefulness of connection.
The words looked smaller on paper than they had inside the interface.
They were not smaller.
Haruto sat across from him, arms folded.
Sayuri sat to one side, brush in hand.
Rei sat with his knees tucked under him and the strange, crawling awareness that a category written by adults had reached through Gojo’s attention and placed a second outline around his life.
Haruto said “Explain disappearance”
Rei looked at the notebook.
“If I withdraw from instruction and archives, there are fewer chances for Gojo curiosity to become useful”
“Continue”
“No public contact. Fewer witnesses. Less opportunity for comparison. Gojo might lose interest”
Sayuri’s brush moved once.
Not writing.
Testing the air.
“And what does withdrawal tell the people watching?” she asked
“That the connection matters”
“Yes”
Haruto’s voice remained flat.
“What else?”
“That my family can be moved by pressure”
“Yes”
“That my public profile was not stable enough to survive Gojo attention”
“Yes”
“That if they want to learn what frightens me, they should use absence”
Haruto nodded once.
“Dead”
Rei closed his eyes.
He had known.
Still annoying.
Sayuri wrote disappearance confirms relevance beneath the note.
Rei watched the words appear and hated how correct they looked.
“The second solution is becoming more visible for reasons unrelated to Gojo” Rei said
Haruto’s eyes sharpened.
Sayuri stopped writing.
“Define more visible” Haruto said
“Not stronger. Not impressive. More consistently useful in ordinary support categories. Records. residue work. group tasks. If attention attaches to me only through Gojo, make other explanations older and broader”
Sayuri’s expression shifted.
Interest.
Caution.
Approval held back because approval too early made children stupid.
“Diffuse relevance” she said
Rei nodded.
“If I am only the weird child Gojo noticed, I am useful as Gojo’s curiosity target. If I am one support child in a Kyoto preliminary group with known correction patterns, archive tasks, Moriyama reports, Akiha corrections, Oda evaluations, and ordinary mistakes, then Gojo’s attention becomes one note in a larger file”
Haruto leaned forward slightly.
“One note can still become important”
“Yes”
“So?”
“So make it expensive to isolate”
Sayuri’s brush stopped.
Haruto’s face became very still.
Rei knew that look.
He had said something too old.
He did not take it back.
Sayuri lowered the brush.
“Where did you learn that phrase?”
Rei thought about the System.
About efficiency.
About administrative classifications.
About stories from another life where people used data, narratives, propaganda, leverage, attention, everything. About watching fictional tragedies and then being reborn into a world that made fiction look mercifully direct.
He looked at the notebook.
“From watching how everyone handles records”
That was true enough to stand.
Haruto accepted it.
For now.
Sayuri wrote:
New strategy:
Diffuse relevance.
Make Gojo connection expensive to isolate.
Then she looked at him.
“What is the cost?”
Of course.
Always cost.
Rei answered carefully.
“I become more visible”
“Yes”
“I involve other children”
“Yes”
“I make patterns with Akiha, possibly Tomonari, maybe Daigo”
Sayuri’s eyes sharpened at the last name.
“Maybe Daigo?”
“He is already an influence pathway”
Haruto’s mouth tightened.
“An unreliable one”
“Yes. That is the problem. If he remains only hostile, he is cheap to use. If he becomes hesitant, embarrassed, or partly invested in not being used, he becomes expensive”
Sayuri studied him.
“You want to make Daigo less useful to whoever carries rumors through him”
“Yes”
“By helping him?”
Rei grimaced.
“That word feels excessive”
Haruto’s mouth twitched.
Sayuri did smile.
Only slightly.
“Rei”
He sighed.
“Yes. By helping him enough that he notices the difference between being corrected and being used”
Haruto leaned back.
“That is dangerous”
“Yes”
“Zenin pride does not digest gratitude well”
“I know”
“Do you?”
“I know enough to start carefully”
Sayuri tapped the brush against the notebook.
“And Akiha?”
Rei looked at the written line.
I do not decide alone what being part of my explanation means for her
“She must choose her part”
“And Tomonari?”
“Tomonari will observe whether invited or not. Better if the pattern gives him something true but incomplete”
Haruto nodded.
“Miyo?”
Rei’s stomach tightened.
“Miyo is different”
“How?”
“She listens for what people are not allowed to say. If she returns, I cannot make her uninterested by being boring anymore. I can only make the useful conclusion unclear”
Sayuri’s gaze was sharp and quiet.
“Good”
Rei did not relax.
No one in the room said it.
That, too, was progress.
Haruto reached for the notebook and turned it slightly toward himself.
“State the new objective in one sentence”
Rei looked at the classification paragraph.
Observation subject whose relevance changes primarily through attention from a higher-value subject.
Prevent usefulness of connection.
He breathed.
In.
Hold.
Out.
“I need to stop being useful as a way to handle Gojo”
Sayuri wrote the sentence.
Haruto nodded.
“Better”
Rei waited.
His father’s eyes lifted.
“Now state the method”
Rei looked toward the eastern garden beyond the closed screen, where the old plum tree had begun dropping pale blossoms one by one.
“Become useful in too many ordinary ways for that one connection to explain me”
Sayuri’s brush moved.
This time, when she wrote, her expression was almost proud.
Almost.
That was enough.
The first step was asking Akiha.
Rei hated that this was the first step because it was the correct one.
The next morning, preliminary instruction began with Moriyama announcing a group residue reconstruction exercise. That meant either she had independently decided the class required teamwork or Haruto had sent a note before breakfast. Given the way Moriyama looked at Rei when he entered, Rei suspected both were true and somehow his fault.
The exercise used a mock incident room.
The training hall had been divided by paper screens into a crude reconstruction of a storage space. Three residue samples, two false trails, one sealed weak curse remnant, five damaged talismans, a broken practice charm, and a fake civilian object had been arranged for the children to analyze. The task was to reconstruct the sequence of events without triggering the remnant or contaminating the samples.
In other words, it was exactly the kind of exercise Rei could have solved too quickly if he were stupid enough to be himself without editing.
Moriyama divided them into groups.
Daigo looked offended before being assigned.
Akiha looked resigned.
Tomonari looked attentive.
Rei looked at the floor because sometimes the floor was the only honest participant in a room.
“Mikage. Suda. Zenin. Tomonari” Moriyama said
Daigo immediately said “Why am I with support types?”
Moriyama stared at him.
“Because the curse remnant did not request better company”
Renzo made a sound.
Tomoe kicked him gently.
Daigo flushed.
Tomonari bowed with the smoothness of someone privately pleased to observe three problems at once.
Akiha stepped beside Rei.
“You knew?” she whispered
“No”
“Are you sure?”
“No”
“Good”
They approached the mock room.
Rei felt the exercise unfold at once.
Too much.
Not because the reconstruction was simple. It was well made. Moriyama was not lazy. There were overlapping traces, residue intentionally smeared by false handling, one talisman burned from the wrong side, and the curse remnant hidden in a storage crate whose seal looked stable unless one read the pattern of dust around it.
But with Tengen’s barrier foundation, Gojo’s efficiency model, Kusakabe’s control, and his own Residual Threading layered together, the room became a report waiting to be written.
No.
That was exactly the problem.
He lowered perception.
Preserved imperfection.
Became useful, not decisive.
Moriyama stood outside the screen.
“You have twelve minutes”
Daigo moved first.
Of course.
He stepped toward the broken charm.
Rei saw the problem immediately. Daigo’s foot would cross a thin residue line near the crate and agitate the remnant. Not enough to release it. Enough to change the sample.
Rei almost stopped him.
Then he stopped himself.
Not every correction had to come from Rei.
Akiha saw his hesitation.
Her eyes flicked to Daigo’s foot.
Then she said “Zenin-san, wait”
Daigo froze half from command, half from indignation.
“What?”
Akiha pointed to the floor.
“You are about to step across a line”
Daigo looked down.
He did not see it.
Of course he did not.
He looked annoyed.
“There is no line”
Tomonari leaned closer.
“There is a faint residue trace”
Daigo’s jaw tightened.
Rei said nothing.
Akiha glanced at him.
Are you sure?
He gave the smallest nod.
The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
She looked back at Daigo.
“If you want to inspect the charm, step from the left”
Daigo looked like he wanted to refuse because she had said it, obey because Tomonari had confirmed it, and pretend the whole situation had been his idea.
Eventually, he stepped from the left.
The residue line remained undisturbed.
Moriyama marked something on her board.
Good.
Not Rei.
Akiha.
Tomonari.
Daigo surviving a correction without turning it into a war.
Progress.
Daigo crouched by the charm.
“It broke from impact”
Akiha started to speak.
Rei touched her sleeve lightly.
Not correction.
Pause.
Daigo frowned at the charm.
His initial answer was wrong.
But not entirely.
The charm had broken after impact, yes, but the residue indicated the impact followed a failed activation. If Rei corrected immediately, Daigo learned nothing except resentment. If Akiha corrected, the pattern stayed. If Tomonari corrected, Kamo superiority entered the room.
Rei waited.
Daigo’s frown deepened.
“Wait. It was already active”
Akiha blinked.
Tomonari looked mildly surprised.
Rei said “Why?”
Daigo glared at him.
Then looked back at the charm.
“The break edge has burned residue inside it. If it broke first, the burn would be outside”
Moriyama’s board scratched softly.
Rei nodded.
“That makes sense”
Daigo looked suspicious.
“Do not sound like that”
“Like what?”
“Like you are being nice for strategic reasons”
Akiha looked down very fast.
Tomonari’s mouth twitched.
Rei considered several answers and chose honesty small enough to pass.
“I am being nice because you are correct”
Daigo stared at him.
Then looked away sharply.
“Obviously”
It was not gratitude.
It was not friendship.
It was a crack in the previous pattern.
Useful.
Human.
Heavy.
The exercise continued.
Tomonari identified the preservation ink mismatch on two damaged talismans. Akiha reconstructed the movement of the civilian object. Daigo correctly determined that the first visible trace had been staged. Rei wrote the sequence down, added two cautious observations, and asked Akiha to verify the order twice.
At minute nine, the curse remnant moved.
Not by accident.
Moriyama had built a delayed trigger into the exercise.
The crate seal pulsed.
Daigo’s hand went toward his practice weapon.
Tomonari began forming cursed energy in a controlled thread.
Akiha stepped back to create space.
Rei saw the fastest solution.
He could thread through the crate seam, compress the remnant’s movement, stabilize the seal, and make it look like a slightly advanced Residual Threading application if no one looked too closely.
Too clean.
Too Rei.
Wrong.
He said “Zenin-san, left panel”
Daigo snapped “What?”
“The seal weak point is on the left panel”
It was not the full truth.
It was enough.
Daigo moved.
Fast.
His strike hit the left panel beside the seal rather than the seal itself. The crate jolted. The remnant recoiled from the vibration. Tomonari used that instant to reinforce the seal from outside. Akiha pulled the contaminated talisman away with handling slips before it could smear the floor trace.
Rei recorded the action.
The remnant settled.
The room held.
No one looked extraordinary.
Everyone looked useful.
Moriyama’s pointer struck the outer screen.
“Time”
They stepped out.
Daigo was breathing hard, half pleased and half angry about being pleased.
Tomonari looked thoughtful.
Akiha looked at Rei with a question she did not ask in front of others.
Moriyama reviewed their sequence.
“Initial reconstruction acceptable. Contamination avoided. Remnant contained. Roles?”
Tomonari answered first.
“Suda identified floor trace and object movement. Zenin inspected charm break sequence and disrupted remnant movement. Mikage recorded sequence and identified panel weakness. I reinforced seal and identified ink mismatch”
Moriyama looked at Rei.
“Do you agree?”
Rei looked down at the record slate.
“No”
The room sharpened.
Moriyama’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain”
“Tomonari-san identified the floor trace after Suda-san pointed it out. Zenin-san identified the charm sequence independently. Suda-san removed the contaminated talisman during containment, not only object movement. I did not identify the panel weakness alone. It followed from Zenin-san’s position and Tomonari-san’s ink mismatch”
Daigo stared at him.
Akiha looked very still.
Tomonari’s gaze sharpened, calculating what Rei had just done.
Moriyama watched him for a long moment.
Then said “Revised roles accepted”
She wrote on the board.
Not Mikage-led.
Not Gojo-noticed child performs.
Group reconstruction.
Distributed success.
Rei felt the strategy take shape outside his head.
This was different from hiding.
Hiding made absence meaningful.
This made presence shared.
Daigo muttered “You could have just taken credit”
Rei looked at him.
“That would make the report less accurate”
Daigo’s face tightened.
For once, he did not know how to turn that into insult.
Good.
After class, Akiha cornered Rei near the storage alcove.
She did not look pleased.
“You are building a group”
Rei lowered his eyes.
“Yes”
“With us”
“Yes”
“You asked me. You did not ask Daigo”
“He would have refused if asked directly”
“That does not mean you are not using him”
Rei took the hit.
It was fair.
“No”
Akiha’s jaw tightened.
“Are you going to ask Tomonari?”
“Not yet”
“That sounds like no”
“It is not no. It is not yet”
She folded her arms.
The gesture looked strange on someone so small and so severe.
“Condition three”
He flinched.
Do not decide alone what being part of my explanation means for her.
“I know”
“Do you?”
“Yes”
“Then tell me what this means for me”
He looked toward the hall.
Daigo was arguing with Renzo about whether his strike had counted as a tactical disruption. Tomonari was speaking quietly with Moriyama. Moriyama looked like she hated that he had intelligent questions. Oda was not present, which made the room less dry and somehow less honest.
Rei looked back at Akiha.
“If the strategy works, people see me as part of a support group rather than Gojo’s curiosity target. That means you become more visible too. Not only as my correction pattern. As someone who can redirect me, verify records, and stabilize group reconstruction”
Akiha listened.
“It makes me useful”
“Yes”
“To whom?”
“Moriyama. The registry. Your family. Maybe Kamo. Maybe others”
“And you?”
Rei swallowed.
“Yes”
She held his gaze.
“At least you said it”
He bowed his head.
“I am sorry”
“I did not say no”
He looked up.
Akiha’s expression was still serious.
“I do not want to be used without knowing. I do want to become useful enough that adults cannot pretend I am only decoration beside boys from louder families”
Rei blinked.
There it was.
Not consent from innocence.
Consent from hunger.
Akiha Suda was kind in places.
She was also ambitious.
He should have remembered that kindness did not erase ambition any more than fear erased desire.
“What do you want?” Rei asked
The question surprised her.
Good.
After a moment, she answered.
“I want to be assigned to real support work before they decide I am only a retainer child with good manners”
“That is dangerous”
“Yes”
“Your mother agrees?”
“My mother says visibility is a knife and invisibility is a locked room”
Rei looked at her with genuine respect.
“I really do like your mother”
“You still should not say that publicly”
“Noted”
Akiha’s mouth softened.
“If this group exists, I am not your correction accessory”
“No”
“I correct you because I choose to”
“Yes”
“And sometimes because you are wrong”
“Unfortunately”
She nodded.
“Then I am in”
Rei exhaled.
Akiha pointed at him.
“Do not look relieved. It is annoying”
He tried to stop.
Failed.
She rolled her eyes.
“Also, you need to talk to Daigo”
Rei’s relief died.
“No”
“Yes”
“That is a terrible idea”
“It is your terrible idea. You put him in the group”
“I included his actions accurately in the report”
“You made him part of your explanation”
Rei opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Akiha looked satisfied.
He hated fairness.
It was much easier when other people were wrong.
Daigo did not make the conversation easy.
That would have contradicted his personality, training, and possibly bloodline.
Rei found him near the outer courtyard, where Daigo was practicing the left-panel strike against a wooden post and pretending he was not repeating the movement from Moriyama’s exercise. His stance was better than it had been months earlier. Still too wide when angry, but less disastrously so.
Progress, despite himself.
Rei stood several steps away.
Daigo noticed and scowled.
“What?”
Rei considered leaving.
Akiha would know.
Somehow.
“I need to say something inconvenient”
Daigo lowered the practice stick.
“You always say inconvenient things”
“This is more inconvenient than usual”
“That sounds like a threat”
“It is not”
“Then say it”
Rei breathed.
In.
Hold.
Out.
“I included your actions accurately in the group report because they were accurate. I also did it because a group success is harder to use against one person”
Daigo stared.
“What?”
Good start.
Terrible start.
Same thing.
Rei continued.
“After Gojo noticed me, people may try to make that useful. If everything I do is isolated, it becomes easier. If our group looks competent together, it becomes harder”
Daigo’s face moved through confusion, suspicion, offense, and something like reluctant comprehension.
“You are using me”
“Yes”
The word struck.
Daigo’s cursed energy flared.
Not dangerously.
Pride first.
Always pride.
Rei kept his hands visible and his output moderate.
“I am telling you because not telling you would be worse”
Daigo stepped closer.
“You think that makes it better?”
“No”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because you are already being used by people who do not tell you”
Daigo went still.
There.
The rumor.
The uncle.
The Gojo question carried into the hall.
Rei did not push.
Daigo’s grip tightened around the practice stick.
“You think I do not know that?”
Rei looked at him.
Maybe he had misread.
Not entirely.
Daigo looked furious.
But not only at Rei.
Good.
No.
Not good.
Complicated.
Daigo said “My uncle tells me things because he thinks I will repeat them. Moriyama-sensei knows. You know. Suda probably knows. Everyone knows. Do you think I am stupid?”
Rei chose honesty.
“No”
Daigo’s eyes narrowed.
Rei added “I think you are angry enough that other people do not need you to be stupid”
The practice stick cracked in Daigo’s grip.
Rei did not move.
A seal near the courtyard edge fluttered.
Daigo looked away.
For one long moment, Rei thought the conversation would become a fight.
Then Daigo threw the broken stick onto the ground.
“I hate you”
“You mentioned”
“No. I mean it properly this time”
Rei nodded.
“That is fair”
Daigo glared at him.
“What do you want?”
“To make carrying rumors through you more expensive”
Daigo laughed once.
Harsh.
“So I am supposed to help you because you admitted it?”
“No”
“Then why would I?”
Rei looked toward the training hall.
“Because if you do not, they will keep using you cheaply”
Daigo’s jaw worked.
Rei continued before self-preservation stopped him.
“And because when you do something correctly, it should be in the report”
That landed differently.
Daigo looked at him as if Rei had done something offensive by being sincere.
Perhaps he had.
Zenin pride did not digest gratitude well.
Haruto had said that.
Daigo picked up another practice stick.
“What does helping look like?”
Rei did not relax.
“Do not carry Gojo rumors to me unless you know who wants me to hear them”
Daigo snorted.
“Fine”
“If someone tells you something about me, ask why they care”
Daigo’s mouth twisted.
“That will annoy them”
“Yes”
His expression improved.
Of course.
“If Moriyama puts us in group drills, do your part well enough that I do not have to correct you”
Daigo glared.
“There it is”
“I said well enough. Not perfectly”
“Die”
“No”
Daigo pointed the stick at him.
“We are not friends”
“I know”
“I am not helping you”
“I understand”
“I am making people regret thinking I am easy to use”
“That is better phrasing”
“Shut up”
Rei bowed slightly.
“Thank you”
“I said shut up”
Rei left before the practice stick became a communication method.
Akiha was waiting near the corridor.
“How did it go?” she asked
“He told me to die”
“That sounds normal”
“He also agreed”
“That sounds less normal”
Rei nodded.
“Yes”
Akiha looked toward the courtyard.
“Good”
He turned to her.
“You planned that”
“I suggested it”
“You knew he knew he was being used”
“I suspected”
“And you let me walk into it”
“You needed to ask him”
Rei stared.
Akiha looked back calmly.
For one brief, terrible second, he saw her mother in her.
Or Sayuri.
Or Moriyama.
Or all the women in his life who had decided that young boys survived better when allowed to discover exactly how much of their cleverness was incomplete.
“You are also terrible” he said
“Yes”
The next group drill went better.
Not cleanly.
Clean would have been suspicious.
But better.
Daigo challenged fewer corrections and made one useful observation about impact sequence. Akiha handled residue movement and corrected Rei once when he actually overstepped. Tomonari identified a false ink layer and then watched with visible interest as Daigo asked who had placed the false layer rather than loudly declaring it irrelevant. Rei recorded, summarized, and inserted himself only where necessary.
Moriyama’s report grew less elegant.
That was the point.
Group B:
Suda Akiha: strong residue pattern discipline, reliable peer correction, improved field composure.
Zenin Daigo: volatile but improving incident-sequence reconstruction when assigned active disruption role.
Kamo Tomonari: strong ink and preservation analysis, measured seal reinforcement, tendency toward hierarchy-based framing.
Mikage Rei: effective field recording, support coordination, occasionally overcautious after Gojo demonstration, benefits from peer correction structure.
Rei read the report because Moriyama placed it face-up on her desk and left the room for exactly one minute.
Subtle, she was not.
Or rather, subtlety was one of the many tools she owned and deliberately refused to use around children she wanted to teach.
Rei copied the relevant lines in his head.
Benefits from peer correction structure.
Excellent.
Humiliating.
Excellent.
Tomonari read it too.
Rei knew because Tomonari became slightly more polite afterward.
Daigo read none of it because reading reports voluntarily remained beyond his current spiritual development.
Akiha read it and said “Benefits from peer correction structure”
Rei closed his eyes.
“Do not”
She looked delighted in the smallest possible way.
“Structure”
“I regret everything”
“You often should”
The report reached the registry by the end of the week.
Fujita did not appear.
That was either good or evidence that the report had succeeded enough to remove the need for visible inquiry.
Oda sent a note to Moriyama.
Group restoration may resume if children remain tolerable and adults remain elsewhere.
Moriyama read the note aloud.
Daigo asked if being tolerable was praise.
Moriyama said “For you, aspirational”
Rei wrote that down later because some lines deserved preservation.
The next restoration session involved all four of them.
That was new.
Daigo in an archive was like a thrown stone in a tea ceremony, but Oda treated him with the same severity she treated mold, humidity, and arrogant adults. This had a stabilizing effect. Daigo hated her within five minutes and obeyed her within six.
The files were not Amana-heavy this time.
They were school-related.
Minor curse cluster reports.
Barrier maintenance requests.
Support children assigned to field observation.
Records of weak curses forming around classrooms, locked rooms, bathrooms, stairwells, storage sheds, and playground corners where children had learned that cruelty was safer when adults were too busy to hear it.
Rei felt the old pressure return.
Children were factories of curses.
Schools were efficient machines.
Oda assigned each of them a classification role.
Akiha tracked emotional origin.
Tomonari tracked preservation stability.
Daigo tracked physical incident sequence.
Rei recorded cross-reference patterns.
A group.
Not a perfect one.
A functional one.
The trap came in the fourth file.
A school in Tokyo.
A minor curse cluster near a route later used by Gojo security.
Rei saw the connection before anyone else.
His cursed energy did not move.
Good.
The efficiency model displayed the cost of reacting and found it wasteful.
Also good.
Akiha’s eyes moved to him.
Are you sure?
He gave the smallest shake of his head.
No correction needed.
Daigo leaned over.
“This one has Gojo route markings”
Tomonari’s gaze sharpened.
Oda said “Read the assignment”
Daigo looked at the top of the file.
“Physical incident sequence”
“Then why are you reading route markings?”
He scowled.
“They are on the page”
“Many things are on pages. Try surviving literacy”
Akiha lowered her head.
Rei adored Oda.
Daigo focused on the physical sequence with great resentment.
The file passed.
No one made Gojo alive in the room.
That mattered.
At the end, Oda reviewed their work.
“Better” she said
Moriyama, standing at the back, looked offended on behalf of difficulty.
Oda continued “Group contamination minimal. Role adherence acceptable. Curiosity insufficiently dead but less stupid”
Daigo frowned.
“Is that good?”
Oda looked at him over her glasses.
“For children, yes”
Tomonari bowed.
Akiha bowed.
Rei bowed.
Daigo remembered to bow half a breath late.
Progress.
After the session, Oda handed Rei a sealed copy of the group summary.
“For Moriyama”
Rei accepted it.
“Why me?”
“Because if I give it to Zenin, it may become a weapon. If I give it to Kamo, it may become correspondence. If I give it to Suda, she will read it correctly and then I will have to respect a child before dinner”
Akiha’s eyes widened.
Oda looked at Rei.
“If I give it to you, you will suffer over the implications and deliver it anyway”
Rei stared.
Oda turned away.
“You are welcome”
Daigo whispered “She hates everyone”
Akiha whispered “I think she likes us”
Rei whispered “That may be worse”
Tomonari whispered “She is within hearing distance”
Oda said “Correct”
All four children went silent.
The sealed summary reached Moriyama untouched.
Mostly because Rei was terrified of Oda.
That night, the System updated.
[Connection Usefulness Mitigation initiated]
Strategy:
Diffuse relevance through ordinary support-role network.
Observed changes:
- peer correction pattern normalized
- group reconstruction success established
- Daigo Zenin carrier reliability disrupted
- Akiha Suda informed cooperation strengthened
- Kamo Tomonari recontextualized as group observer rather than sole external evaluator
- archive role expanded to group setting
- Gojo-related file prompt ignored successfully
Administrative profile adjustment inferred:
Mikage Rei increasingly embedded in Kyoto preliminary support cohort.
5-F exploitation efficiency reduced: minor
Masking Protocol: 93%
Minor.
Rei glared at the word.
All that for minor.
Then he exhaled.
Minor was not nothing.
Minor was the beginning of expensive.
Another message appeared.
[Distributed Public Self Construct forming]
Current public identity layers:
1. Mikage support child
2. Field recorder trainee
3. Overtrained but stress-affected after Gojo contact
4. Peer-corrected group member
5. Useful within cohort rather than isolated anomaly
Stability: developing
Rei stared at the phrase Distributed Public Self
A mask no longer worn alone.
That sounded safer.
That sounded more dangerous.
Both could be true.
He opened his notebook and wrote the update in his own words.
New strategy working only slightly.
Not invisible.
Not isolated.
Not Gojo’s curiosity target alone.
Group:
Akiha chooses correction and visibility.
Daigo chooses not to be cheap to use.
Tomonari observes but is also included in role structure.
Oda supports group restoration because she hates adults using records as weapons.
Moriyama worsens my file elegantly by making me less elegant.
Important:
A distributed mask requires people.
People are not tools even when strategy uses them.
Need keep checking consent where possible.
Need make sure I do not start calling use by kinder names.
He paused.
Then added:
Minor reduction is still reduction.
Make the connection expensive.
For once, the sentence did not embarrass him.
In Tokyo, Satoru Gojo received another report he had not asked for.
It was delivered by the same adult who had smiled too carefully when Satoru said the Mikage report was boring on purpose. The man placed the folder on the table in the afternoon study and said it concerned the Kyoto preliminary demonstration aftermath.
Satoru did not open it immediately.
That annoyed the man.
Good.
Satoru looked at the folder.
“What is it?”
“Follow-up notes, Satoru-sama”
“On what?”
“Several Kyoto children of potential future relevance”
Boring.
Satoru pushed the folder with one finger.
It slid half an inch.
“Does it say weird support kid is still weird?”
The man paused.
“It says Mikage Rei is best understood within a peer support cohort”
Satoru stared.
Then burst out laughing.
The man looked disturbed.
That made it funnier.
“Peer support cohort?” Satoru repeated
“Yes”
“That sounds like something boring people write when they are mad he has friends”
The man’s smile thinned.
“Mikage’s individual relevance may have been overstated after your comment”
Satoru stopped laughing.
There.
Not the words.
The shape.
Adults trying to make his attention into a tool, then trying to tell him the tool had been filed away properly.
Satoru tilted his head.
“Did I ask you to follow him?”
The room became very still.
The man bowed.
“It is standard to evaluate potential irregularities that draw your notice”
Satoru looked at him over the top of his sunglasses.
The curse under the roof tile outside had died yesterday. Someone had finally cleaned the eaves. There were no distractions now.
“That is creepy”
The man did not know what to do with that.
Excellent.
“Satoru-sama”
“If I say a bird outside looks weird, do you write a bird report?”
“No”
“What if the bird has a family technique?”
The man’s mouth tightened.
“Satoru-sama, Mikage Rei is not a bird”
“Good observation”
The man inhaled slowly.
“Your attention carries significance”
Satoru hated that sentence immediately.
Not because it was wrong.
Because it was true in the ugliest way adults could make truth.
He leaned back.
“My attention is mine”
The man bowed lower.
“Of course”
Lie.
Satoru saw it.
Not with the Six Eyes.
Anyone could have seen that one if they were allowed to call adults liars without consequences.
He pushed the folder back.
“Do not bring me boring reports about him”
The man looked almost relieved.
Satoru smiled.
“Bring me reports about the teacher”
“The teacher?”
“The annoying one”
“Moriyama Keiko?”
“Yeah. Her”
The man blinked.
“For what purpose?”
Satoru grinned.
“She said acceptable”
The adult looked lost.
Good.
“Also the old archive lady if there is one. The report sounds like it came from someone mean”
The man had absolutely no idea what was happening anymore.
That pleased Satoru.
He had not stopped being curious about Rei Mikage.
Not even close.
But if adults wanted to use his curiosity, they could at least suffer for choosing the wrong shape.
The man bowed and withdrew with the folder.
Satoru watched him leave.
After the door closed, he looked toward the garden and thought of a boy whose cursed energy became more plausible when observed, a girl who corrected his sleeve, and a mother who apparently considered staring rude.
He smiled.
Small.
Private.
Then he looked away.
Not because he had forgotten.
Because some things became more interesting when adults were not allowed to hold them.
Back in Kyoto, three days later, Fujita’s expected visit did not happen.
Instead, Moriyama received a formal inquiry about her instructional methods after the joint demonstration.
She read it aloud to the class.
Daigo whispered “Again?”
Moriyama ignored him.
The inquiry asked why Satoru Gojo had described her as annoying in a Gojo internal discussion.
The room went silent.
Rei stared at the floor.
Akiha stared at Rei.
Daigo stared at Moriyama with something like awe.
Tomonari looked as if an administrative god had dropped a fish onto his desk.
Moriyama folded the inquiry.
Her face was unreadable.
Then she looked directly at Rei.
“Mikage”
Rei straightened.
“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”
“Did you somehow teach the Gojo heir to weaponize accurate descriptions?”
Rei opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Akiha whispered “Are you sure?”
“No” Rei said
Moriyama’s scar twitched.
The class did not know whether laughter was survivable.
Most chose not to test it.
Moriyama placed the inquiry on her desk.
“Apparently my relevance has increased through attention from a higher-value subject”
Rei stopped breathing.
She knew.
Not the code, perhaps.
Not the System.
Enough.
Moriyama’s eyes remained on him.
“Class, today we learn how absurd categories become when applied to the wrong person”
Daigo raised a hand.
“Is this about Gojo?”
“No” Moriyama said “This is about adults”
Rei lowered his head to hide his expression.
The connection had shifted.
Not vanished.
Not solved.
But shifted.
Gojo had redirected attention.
Toward Moriyama.
Toward the absurdity of adults tracking what he called annoying.
The System opened at the edge of Rei’s awareness without fully intruding.
[Connection Usefulness Mitigation update]
Higher-value subject redirected adult inquiry independently.
Exploitation pathway disrupted:
- direct Mikage focus reduced
- Moriyama Keiko relevance increased as alternate explanation
- Gojo curiosity remains active but less administratively obedient
5-F exploitation efficiency reduced: moderate
Masking Protocol: 93%
Moderate.
Rei almost smiled.
Almost.
Moriyama would have seen.
After class, she kept him behind.
No hostile questioning chair.
That was concerning.
She stood beside the open screen while afternoon light cut the floor into long gold rectangles.
“You are becoming less convenient to isolate” she said
Rei looked down.
“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”
“Do not be pleased with yourself”
“I am trying not to be”
“Try harder”
“Yes”
She looked toward the courtyard.
“Gojo redirected attention to me”
“Yes”
“Did you plan that?”
“No”
“Did you predict it?”
“No”
“Did you hope for it?”
Rei paused.
Honesty.
Small enough.
“Maybe”
Moriyama snorted.
“Better”
He did not relax.
She seemed satisfied.
“That boy is dangerous”
“Yes”
“Not only because of his technique”
“I know”
“Good. Remember this: if you try to make Satoru Gojo part of a plan, the plan will become about Satoru Gojo”
Rei looked up.
Moriyama’s face was severe.
“If he helps you, it will be because he chooses to, not because you placed him correctly. If he harms you, it may be for the same reason. Do not confuse understanding his cage with owning the key”
The words struck deep.
Rei bowed.
“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”
She turned away.
“And stop teaching famous children to describe me accurately”
“I did not”
“Do not begin”
He almost smiled.
This time, she let him.
Only a little.
That night, Rei wrote:
Gojo redirected attention to Moriyama.
This was not my plan.
This matters.
Moriyama says:
If you try to make Satoru Gojo part of a plan, the plan will become about Satoru Gojo.
Do not confuse understanding his cage with owning the key.
Important:
Gojo is not only a risk, not only a shield, not only higher-value subject.
He can choose.
He stopped with the brush hovering above the page.
Then added:
So can I.
The sentence was simple.
Almost childish.
He kept it for that reason.
The next morning, the old plum tree had lost half its blossoms.
Pale petals lay across the eastern garden stones like tiny pieces of paper no one had filed correctly. Sayuri swept them herself, which meant she wanted time alone with the tree or wanted everyone to know she was not avoiding it anymore.
Rei joined her without speaking.
She handed him a broom.
They swept in silence for several minutes.
Then Sayuri said “You have changed strategy”
“Yes”
“Is it working?”
“A little”
“Good”
He looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
“I am allowed to use the word”
They swept another line of petals.
Rei said “It involves people”
“Most real strategies do”
“I do not like that”
“Most children raised by cautious families do not”
“I am using them”
“Yes”
His hands tightened around the broom.
Sayuri’s voice remained gentle.
“And they are using you”
Rei looked up.
“Akiha wants visibility. Daigo wants not to be treated as a fool. Tomonari wants information and standing. Moriyama wants students who survive long enough to annoy her later. Oda wants records handled by people who understand they are dangerous. Your father and I want you alive. Gojo, perhaps, wants something that is not already decided for him before he reaches for it”
The petals moved across the stones in pale clusters.
Sayuri continued “Use is not automatically cruelty. The question is whether choice remains”
Rei stared at the broom.
“And if it does not?”
“Then you stop calling it strategy”
The answer settled inside him.
Not comfortably.
Correctly.
They finished sweeping the path.
At the edge of the garden, one blossom remained on the lowest branch.
Rei looked at it.
Small.
Fragile.
Stubborn.
Sayuri followed his gaze.
“Leave that one”
“Why?”
“Because not everything needs to be cleaned into order”
Tengen’s barrier foundation noticed the sentence.
Gojo’s efficiency model noticed the waste.
Kusakabe’s control held the impulse to analyze.
Nanami’s reinforcement steadied his hands.
Yuta’s reserve stayed quiet.
Yuji’s body breathed.
Rei let the blossom remain.
For once, that was the whole lesson.
