Chapter 15

JJK: Behind The Strongest

The cohort became real because adults wrote it down.

That was how many dangerous things became real.

Before the report, Rei, Akiha, Daigo, and Tomonari were only four children who had been placed together often enough for annoyance to acquire structure. After the report, they were an instructional unit. A support reconstruction group. A preliminary cohort with balanced observational, physical, archival, and seal-handling tendencies.

The words made it sound intentional.

That was embarrassing because, in several places, it had become true.

Daigo hated being part of a cohort, which did not stop him from asking why the cohort had not been assigned a better training slot. Akiha corrected the word assigned into recorded and then had to spend three minutes explaining why the difference mattered, during which Daigo accused her of becoming Mikage with better hair. Tomonari took notes on their argument. Rei did not ask why.

Moriyama watched them all with the exhausted satisfaction of a woman who had successfully turned four inconvenient children into one larger inconvenience adults would now have to justify misusing.

Oda sent a note after reading the classification.

If they are a cohort, send them with enough paper.

Rei copied the sentence into his notebook.

Daigo asked whether Oda hated children.

Akiha said “No, she hates unprepared children”

Tomonari added “And adults”

Rei said “Mostly adults”

Daigo looked at all three of them.

“You people talk about that old woman like she is a curse with office supplies”

Moriyama, passing behind them, said “Show respect to senior curses”

No one knew whether laughing was permitted.

Daigo risked it first.

That surprised Rei.

It surprised Daigo too.

For a few weeks, the cohort remained mostly paper.

They trained in reconstruction drills, field recording patterns, curse-remnant containment, and coordinated incompetence, which was Rei’s private name for the art of making group success look uneven enough to be believable. Akiha disliked the phrase but admitted it was accurate. Tomonari disliked that Akiha admitted it. Daigo disliked everything except the parts where he hit something at the correct time and Moriyama grudgingly told him not to ruin the moment by speaking.

The System approved in its usual cold way.

[Distributed Public Self Construct strengthening]

Cohort profile:

- Suda Akiha: correction and residue pattern support

- Zenin Daigo: disruption and incident sequence testing

- Kamo Tomonari: preservation and seal reinforcement

- Mikage Rei: field recording and coordination

5-F exploitation efficiency reduced: moderate

Moderate remained the most offensive word in the System’s vocabulary.

Rei tried not to resent it.

He failed moderately.

The first real field assignment came on a gray morning that smelled like wet stone and school lunches.

Moriyama announced it without ceremony.

“You four will accompany me to a cleared site tomorrow”

Daigo looked up immediately.

“A mission?”

“No”

“A field assignment?”

“No”

“What is it then?”

“A cleared site review”

Daigo looked betrayed by language itself.

Tomonari asked “What type of site?”

“Elementary school annex. Civilian cover already active. Curse neutralized yesterday. Weak remnants and residue remain. Your task is reconstruction, contamination avoidance, and supplementary recording”

Akiha’s fingers tightened around her brush.

Rei noticed.

So did Moriyama.

The instructor continued “No heroics. No independent exorcism attempts. No touching unidentified residue. No walking ahead. No proving anything. If something moves, you step back unless ordered otherwise”

Daigo raised a hand.

Moriyama looked at him.

“If your question begins with what if, the answer is still step back”

He lowered his hand.

Rei asked “Who cleared the site?”

Moriyama’s gaze moved to him.

“Grade 2 sorcerer named Kitahara. Injured but alive. Assistant submitted initial report. We review because the curse cluster formed near children and the residue pattern is unusual”

Children.

The room quieted slightly.

Even Daigo understood that word differently when Moriyama said it like that.

Rei wrote the site type down.

Elementary school annex.

Cleared.

Unusual residue.

Children.

Not good.

Akiha leaned closer once Moriyama turned away.

“Are you sure?”

Rei looked at the page.

“No”

She nodded.

“Me neither”

Daigo heard.

“About what?”

Akiha looked at him.

“The site”

Daigo scoffed, but softly.

“It is cleared”

Rei said “Cleared means the person writing the report survived long enough to use the word”

Daigo stared.

“That was not comforting”

“It was not meant to be”

Tomonari closed his notebook.

“Cleared sites can be more educational than active sites”

Daigo turned to him.

“You somehow made that worse”

Tomonari looked mildly offended.

“I was agreeing”

“I know”

Akiha sighed.

Rei wrote cohort morale unstable in the margin.

Daigo saw it and kicked his ankle under the table.

The assignment was almost cancelled before it began.

Not because of danger.

Because of parents.

Haruto read the notice twice.

Sayuri read it once, then asked for the initial report. Moriyama had already sent a summary through the proper channel, which meant she either anticipated resistance or enjoyed making parental objections more efficient.

The family room settled into the familiar shape of strategy.

Haruto placed the report on the table.

“Cleared yesterday. Grade 2 sorcerer injured. Initial cluster classified Grade 3 with multiple Fourth-Grade remnants. Location is an old storage annex attached to civilian elementary school. Curse formed around repeated punishment rumors involving locked rooms”

Sayuri’s expression hardened.

“Children locked in rooms?”

“Unofficially. Officially, no misconduct confirmed”

Rei’s mouth tightened.

Officially was doing too much work.

Sayuri noticed.

“Do not carry the whole site before you arrive”

“I am not”

“You are”

He looked down.

She was right.

Haruto tapped the report.

“Your role is recording. Nothing else”

“If the report is wrong?”

“Then your role is still recording unless Moriyama gives another order”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

Haruto studied him.

“Say it properly”

Rei looked up.

“My role is recording. If the report is wrong, I record the error, step back, and follow Moriyama-sensei’s order”

Sayuri leaned back.

“Better”

Haruto did not look fully satisfied, but he rarely did when satisfaction might encourage survival-threatening confidence.

Sayuri looked at the site diagram.

“Where is the annex?”

“North side of school grounds. Two storage rooms, one unused classroom, one staff supply room, one narrow connecting hallway”

She traced the hallway with one finger.

“Doors?”

“Five”

Rei’s barrier perception stirred.

He lowered attention.

Sayuri looked at him immediately.

“Do not start tonight”

“I stopped”

“Good”

Haruto added “You will wear three anchors”

“Three?”

“One attention anchor, one reserve dampener, one emergency break”

Rei stared.

“That sounds excessive”

“It is less excessive than carrying half the future inside a child into a school curse site”

Silence.

Sayuri closed her eyes.

Haruto’s mouth tightened.

The sentence had come out sharper than intended.

It was true.

That made it worse.

Rei lowered his gaze.

“I know”

Haruto exhaled.

“Rei”

“I know” Rei said again, quieter “I am not angry”

Sayuri’s voice softened.

“That does not make it harmless”

No.

It did not.

Haruto sat back.

“You are not going because you are ready for danger. You are going because refusing every real site makes the profile useless and because Moriyama will be there”

Rei nodded.

“And because if we say no?” he asked

Sayuri gave him a tired smile.

“Then every adult with a file learns which door still opens easily”

There it was.

The first anchor was cold against Rei’s spine.

The second sat under his left sleeve, where Sayuri’s red-thread charms usually rested. The third was sewn into the inner lining of his collar, close enough to his throat that he could feel it whenever he swallowed. Haruto had tested each twice before they left. Sayuri tested them again after him, because love in the Mikage household often looked like mistrusting another person’s competence with great care.

The elementary school looked ordinary.

That was the first cruelty.

A low wall. Painted gates. A yard still damp from last night’s rain. A row of shoe lockers visible through the main entrance. Children’s drawings displayed in the windows of the newer building, bright animals and flowers and smiling faces taped against glass. The annex sat behind the main structure, older and uglier, a squat concrete addition with narrow windows and water stains beneath the roof.

Civilian cover signs said maintenance inspection.

The school was closed for the day.

No children.

That helped.

Not enough.

Moriyama waited by the gate with a registry assistant and a tall woman Rei did not know. The woman had a bandage around her left forearm and a tired face. Grade 2 sorcerer, likely Kitahara.

She looked at the children and frowned.

“They are small”

Daigo bristled.

Moriyama said “Yes. They often are at this age”

Kitahara looked at her.

“I said children, not interns”

Moriyama’s expression did not move.

“They are here for supervised reconstruction”

“They should not be here”

Daigo looked ready to agree for the wrong reasons.

Rei immediately liked Kitahara more than expected.

Moriyama said “Noted”

Kitahara stared at her.

“That means you are ignoring me”

“Yes”

Akiha lowered her head.

Tomonari’s mouth twitched.

Daigo whispered “I like her”

Rei whispered “Which one?”

Daigo whispered “Both, unfortunately”

That was new enough to be alarming.

Moriyama turned.

“Inside. Stay in formation. Suda and Mikage center. Zenin left. Tomonari right. If you move without instruction, I will assign you fungus restoration with Oda for a month”

Daigo went pale.

No one questioned the formation.

The annex smelled of dust, disinfectant, old paper, and something sour underneath.

Not blood.

Not rot.

Fear left too long in corners.

The hallway was narrow enough that adults had to angle their shoulders slightly. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The floor was clean in the way spaces became clean after something horrible was removed badly. Too much detergent. Too little understanding.

Rei kept his cursed energy low.

Visible profile: support child, moderate reserves, careful control, nervous but functional.

Hidden: ocean under floor, efficiency narrowed, barrier perception restricted, reinforcement resting, body stable.

Akiha stood close enough that her sleeve brushed his once.

Not correction.

Presence.

Daigo walked on the left, trying to look unimpressed and mostly succeeding because fear made his arrogance quieter rather than absent. Tomonari kept his eyes on the walls, not the doors. Smart.

Moriyama stopped at the first doorway.

“Initial report”

Rei opened the copied summary.

“Cluster centered in storage room two. Primary curse manifested from fear of locked rooms, punishment, and being forgotten. Grade 3 classification. Three subordinate remnants. Kitahara-san exorcised primary at 17:22. Two remnants neutralized afterward. One residue knot remains sealed for review”

Kitahara’s face tightened at the time stamp.

Rei noticed.

Moriyama noticed Rei noticing.

“Good” Moriyama said “Now reconstruct entry”

Tomonari inspected the floor.

“Two adults entered. One stayed near doorway”

“Assistant” Kitahara said

Akiha looked toward the wall.

“There were child traces here before the curse. Old. Repeated”

Daigo crouched near a scuffed patch.

“Someone dragged furniture?”

Kitahara glanced at Moriyama.

Moriyama said “Do not look at us. Prove it”

Daigo scowled but pointed.

“Marks are straight and repeated. Too low for desks. Maybe storage boxes”

Rei checked the report.

“No furniture movement listed”

Daigo’s face sharpened.

“Then the report missed it”

“Or the movement predates the report”

Daigo glared.

“Do you always have to make answers less satisfying?”

“Yes”

Akiha said “He does”

Tomonari added “Consistently”

Daigo muttered “Cohort my ass”

Moriyama’s pointer struck the floor.

“Language”

Daigo stiffened.

Kitahara looked away, very obviously not laughing.

They moved deeper.

Storage room one held broken chairs, old art supplies, boxed paper, sports equipment, and enough dust to make Oda appear in Rei’s imagination with a disappointed expression. Residue lay across the floor in thin uneven bands. Fear. Embarrassment. Anger. Adult irritation. Child resentment. The curse had not centered here, but it had fed here.

Akiha handled the emotional pattern.

Tomonari checked the preservation seals left by the cleanup team.

Daigo tracked physical disruption.

Rei recorded.

It worked.

Too well at first.

That made him uneasy.

Real sites did not behave for children because a report gave them roles.

The second storage room was worse.

The door had been removed and leaned against the wall outside. Three talismans sealed the frame. The room beyond was small, windowless, and empty except for a metal shelf bolted to the far wall and a square patch on the floor where something heavy had sat for a long time.

The air pressed against Rei’s teeth.

Locked room fear.

Old.

Layered.

Civilian.

The anchor at his spine cooled.

Moriyama looked at him.

“Status”

Rei blinked.

He had not realized his breathing changed.

“Functional”

“Not what I asked”

He swallowed.

“Nervous. Stable”

“Better”

Akiha’s eyes flicked toward him.

Daigo did not make a joke.

Tomonari looked at the missing door.

“The door was removed after exorcism?”

Kitahara nodded.

“Would not stop rattling”

Daigo stared at her.

“After the curse was gone?”

“Yes”

No one liked that.

Moriyama pointed to the frame.

“Observe from outside”

Rei let barrier perception rise just enough.

The doorway was wrong.

Not actively open. Not a threshold invitation like the plum tree. Cruder. More desperate. A room that had been used too many times to separate children from help had learned the shape of refusal badly enough that curse residue had filled the difference.

Inside.

Outside.

Punished.

Forgotten.

Quiet.

The door had not created the curse.

People had.

The door had only learned the lesson.

Rei’s fingers tightened around the slate.

Yuta’s reserve shifted.

The collar anchor warmed sharply.

He breathed.

In.

Hold.

Out.

Akiha whispered “Your hand”

He looked down.

The slate edge was bending.

Only slightly.

Still.

He loosened his grip.

“Thanks”

Daigo looked at the slate.

Then at the room.

For once, he said nothing.

Moriyama asked “Sequence”

Akiha answered first.

“Children were shut in here more than once”

Kitahara’s jaw tightened.

Moriyama said “Support”

Akiha pointed toward the lower wall.

“Small hand traces. Not just one child. Multiple heights. Some old enough to fade, some recent”

Tomonari looked sick.

He recovered quickly.

“Storage shelf residue shows adult handling after child traces”

Daigo crouched near the floor patch.

“Something heavy blocked the door from inside?”

Moriyama’s eyes sharpened.

“Inside?”

Daigo frowned.

“No. Wait. The floor patch is wrong for that”

Rei saw it.

So did Akiha.

Tomonari leaned in.

Daigo rubbed his forehead.

“Outside. Something heavy was placed outside the door”

The hallway chilled.

Kitahara muttered a curse under her breath.

Moriyama did not correct her language.

Rei wrote the line.

Heavy object placed outside storage room door repeatedly. Likely to prevent exit.

The words looked too small.

They were records.

Records remembered differently.

His hand almost shook.

Akiha touched the edge of his slate.

Not stopping him.

Sharing weight.

He finished the line.

Moriyama’s voice was quieter when she spoke.

“Continue”

The sealed residue knot sat inside the room, beneath the metal shelf.

It looked like nothing.

A dark smudge at the edge of the wall.

Three talismans held it in place.

Kitahara had left it intact for review because it was not strong enough to justify immediate destruction and because unusual remnants sometimes explained what the main curse had hidden.

Rei respected the decision.

He hated it.

Tomonari examined the seal from the doorway.

“Stable”

Akiha said “It is not reaching”

Daigo said “It is waiting”

Everyone looked at him.

He glared.

“What? It is”

Moriyama nodded.

“Explain”

Daigo looked annoyed at being asked to justify instinct.

“It is not pushing the seal. It is sitting where it can see the door”

Rei’s throat tightened.

Daigo was right.

The knot was positioned beneath the shelf, angled toward the doorway, not toward the interior of the room. A remnant of fear that had learned to watch the exit because the exit had not opened.

Kitahara looked away.

Moriyama’s expression remained hard.

Rei wrote:

Residue knot displays exit-oriented fixation.

Akiha whispered “Write it plainly”

Rei paused.

Then crossed out the line.

Moriyama saw.

Oda would have approved.

He wrote again.

It keeps watching the door.

The sentence hurt more.

Better.

They finished storage room two after seventeen minutes.

No curse attack.

No dramatic failure.

No hidden special grade.

Only a room full of what adults had done often enough for fear to become architecture.

That was worse in a quieter way.

The unused classroom came next.

It should have been easier.

It was not.

The room had desks stacked at the back, faded posters on the wall, and a blackboard still bearing the ghost of old chalk. Someone had written a cheerful class motto months ago, erased it, and left enough chalk residue for Rei to read the first character.

Smile.

He disliked that.

A weak remnant had been neutralized here, according to Kitahara’s report. It had formed from children pretending nothing was wrong after the locked-room punishments. Shame layered over fear. Forced normalcy. The kind of residue adults missed when no one screamed loudly enough.

Daigo stood near the door.

“This room feels fake”

Akiha nodded.

“Like people came here after crying”

Tomonari looked at the blackboard.

“The chalk residue is disturbed by cursed energy”

Rei recorded.

Moriyama watched.

Kitahara leaned against the wall, injured arm held close, eyes tired.

The sealed site was making her relive yesterday.

Rei noticed.

Too late.

The classroom blackboard rattled.

Not much.

A soft tap.

Everyone froze.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

From inside the board.

Daigo moved first, but not forward this time.

He shifted left, placing himself between the sound and Akiha without seeming to think about it.

Akiha stepped back and opened space.

Tomonari lifted a seal.

Rei’s barrier perception unfolded before he could fully stop it.

Not a remnant under the board.

Behind the board.

A narrow gap in the wall, sealed over years ago, full of old chalk dust, paper scraps, and a thin sliver of curse residue that had escaped the initial sweep because it had never fully manifested.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Like knuckles from inside a wall.

The children all looked at Moriyama.

Good.

Very good.

Moriyama raised one hand.

“Back”

They stepped back.

The tapping became faster.

Kitahara pushed off the wall.

“I missed that”

Moriyama said “You were bleeding yesterday”

“Still missed it”

“Yes”

The honesty was brutal.

Kitahara accepted it.

Rei stared at the board.

The remnant was tiny.

Fourth-grade at most. Maybe less. A residue sliver with reflex, not intention. It tapped because the room had taught fear that help came through walls too late.

Moriyama placed a talisman on her palm.

Before she could move, the board cracked.

A thin black hand slipped through.

Daigo cursed.

Tomonari’s seal lit.

Akiha’s breath caught.

Rei saw the fastest solution.

Again.

Too fast.

He could cut the remnant’s path through the wall with barrier perception, thread residue through the crack, pin it long enough for Moriyama to exorcise without the board breaking. Clean. Efficient. Dangerous.

But there was a group.

And Moriyama was there.

He said “Wall gap behind the board”

Moriyama heard.

Tomonari reacted.

He placed his seal not on the visible hand, but two feet to the right, where the hidden gap continued.

Akiha grabbed the chalk eraser with handling slips and threw it at the board’s lower left edge.

Dust burst.

The residue line became visible for half a second.

Daigo struck the floor with his practice staff hard enough to send a vibration through the stacked desks. The remnant recoiled from the sudden impact pattern.

Moriyama’s talisman landed.

The hand burned away.

The tapping stopped.

Silence.

Dust drifted through a shaft of gray light.

Daigo breathed hard.

Tomonari lowered his seal.

Akiha stared at the board.

Rei’s heart hammered once, twice, then settled under the anchors.

Moriyama looked at all four of them.

“Report”

They answered in pieces.

Not perfectly.

Naturally.

Akiha first, voice tight.

“Hidden gap. It reacted to being noticed”

Tomonari followed.

“Seal point was not the hand. The hand was only leakage”

Daigo added “It did not like vibration”

Rei wrote quickly.

“Unmanifested remnant concealed behind blackboard wall gap. Tapping response intensified after observation. Group containment performed under instructor supervision”

Moriyama said “Plain line”

Rei knew what she meant.

He added:

Something was still knocking after the room was supposed to be clear.

Kitahara closed her eyes.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Daigo said “That sentence is creepy as hell”

Moriyama looked at him.

He stiffened.

She said “Accurate”

He looked almost proud.

Then tried to hide it.

Badly.

They completed the site review two hours later.

No one was injured.

That mattered.

The final supplementary report was ugly, incomplete, emotionally uncomfortable, and useful.

That mattered too.

Moriyama made all four children sign the observation slate under her supervision.

Daigo stared at the signature line.

“Why all of us?”

Moriyama answered “Because all of you saw it”

Tomonari asked “Will this be attached to Kitahara-san’s report?”

Kitahara answered before Moriyama.

“Yes”

Her voice was rough.

She looked at the slate, then at the children.

“I missed the wall gap”

Daigo shifted awkwardly.

Akiha looked down.

Tomonari said nothing.

Rei looked at Kitahara’s bandaged arm.

“You found the main curse and left enough structure for review”

Kitahara looked at him.

For a second, he thought he had said too much.

Then she huffed.

“Field recorder kid, huh?”

Rei bowed.

“Still learning”

“Keep doing that”

It was not praise exactly.

It felt better.

At the gate, while Moriyama handled the final handoff, Daigo leaned against the wall and stared at the schoolyard.

“I hate this place”

No one mocked him.

Akiha stood with her arms wrapped loosely around herself.

Tomonari looked tired in a way his manners could not fully hide.

Rei held the sealed copy of the supplementary report.

The ordinary school building stood beyond the yard, bright drawings still taped to the windows.

Smile.

He wondered how many rooms in the world had learned to hate children quietly.

Too many.

Akiha spoke first.

“That was real”

Daigo snorted.

“No, really?”

She looked at him.

He sighed.

“I know. I know what you mean”

Tomonari adjusted his sleeve.

“The report will likely trigger a civilian-side inquiry”

Rei looked at him.

“Likely?”

Tomonari’s mouth tightened.

“Possibly”

Daigo kicked a pebble.

“If it does not?”

The question surprised all of them.

Tomonari had no immediate answer.

Akiha looked at Rei.

Rei looked at the report.

“If it does not, the record still exists”

Daigo’s face twisted.

“That is not enough”

“No”

The answer came softly.

Daigo looked at him.

Rei continued “It is not enough. It is what we have right now”

Daigo looked away.

For once, he did not argue.

Moriyama returned.

“You all look miserable”

Daigo muttered “The place sucked”

“Yes” Moriyama said “That is the technical classification”

Akiha almost laughed.

Tomonari did not, but his shoulders eased.

Moriyama took the sealed report from Rei.

“Car”

They obeyed.

No one spoke for the first half of the ride back.

Moriyama sat in front.

The registry assistant drove.

The four children sat in the rear compartment with a privacy charm between them and the adults that probably muted sound just enough to pretend they were being given space.

Daigo stared at his hands.

Akiha looked out the window.

Tomonari sat straight but pale.

Rei watched all of them and did not know what to do with the fact that he had wanted this.

Not the site.

Not the children hurt.

Never that.

But the field. The reality. The chance to be useful where records began before paper.

Wanting had cost.

He knew that.

Still wanted.

Daigo spoke without looking up.

“When you wrote that line about knocking”

Rei turned.

“Yes?”

“It was better than the first one”

Akiha looked over.

Tomonari too.

Rei said “Yes”

Daigo’s mouth tightened.

“Oda would have liked it”

Akiha nodded.

“She would have called it tolerable”

Tomonari said “Possibly insufficiently overexplained”

Rei looked at him.

Was that a joke?

Tomonari’s face remained polite.

Maybe.

Daigo snorted.

“Listen to him trying to be funny”

Tomonari looked offended.

“I succeeded”

Akiha smiled faintly.

“You attempted”

Rei leaned back.

The car carried them away from the school.

For a few minutes, the cohort felt less like strategy and more like four children who had seen the same ugly thing and did not know how to put it down alone.

That was dangerous.

That was also the point.

At the compound, parents and escorts waited.

Haruto was there.

So was Sayuri.

Rei had expected one of them.

Not both.

He stepped out of the car and immediately felt their eyes move over him, not searching for blood first, but for the shape of whatever the site had left behind.

That was worse.

Better.

Both.

Haruto asked “Injured?”

“No”

Sayuri asked “Stable?”

Rei hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“Not completely”

Her face softened.

“Good answer”

He almost smiled.

Moriyama handed Haruto a brief verbal summary while Sayuri crouched in front of Rei and adjusted the collar anchor with unnecessary care.

“Did the anchors work?” she asked

“Yes”

“All three?”

“Yes”

“Did you need the emergency break?”

“No”

Her hands paused.

“Did you want to?”

He looked away.

“Once”

“Why?”

“Anger”

“At?”

He thought of the locked room.

The heavy object outside the door.

The blackboard tapping.

The word Smile half-erased on the wall.

“Adults” he said

Sayuri’s fingers tightened on the collar anchor.

“A broad category”

“Accurate”

“Unfortunately”

Haruto finished with Moriyama and approached.

The instructor looked at Rei.

“Your report line will remain”

He blinked.

“The plain one?”

“Yes”

Something was still knocking after the room was supposed to be clear.

Rei nodded.

“Thank you”

Moriyama’s eyes narrowed.

“Do not thank me for keeping accurate work”

“Sorry”

“Do not apologize for thanking me”

He stared.

She stared back.

Daigo, nearby, whispered “You cannot win”

Moriyama said “Correct”

Daigo flinched.

Akiha laughed under her breath.

That was how the day ended.

Not with revelation.

Not with triumph.

With exhaustion, a sealed report, and a line of plain language that would enter a file somewhere and perhaps, if the world was less cruel than usual, force someone to ask why an elementary school storage room had learned to make curses.

That night, Rei opened his notebook before the System.

He wrote the site name.

The hallway.

Storage room two.

The heavy object outside the door.

The knot watching the exit.

The blackboard.

The tapping.

Kitahara’s injury.

Daigo’s correct observations.

Akiha’s plain line correction.

Tomonari’s seal placement.

Moriyama’s decision to keep the sentence.

Then he wrote:

The room was supposed to be clear.

Something was still knocking.

This is why records matter.

This is why records are not enough.

He stopped.

The brush hovered.

Then he added:

I wanted to be there.

That is also part of the record.

Only after that did he open the System.

Moderate-plus.

Rei stared at it.

“You are ridiculous”

The System ignored him.

Another message appeared.

Repeated exposure to child-fear residue has increased emotional resonance risk.

Trusted Anchor contact recommended.

Rei closed the interface.

For once, he obeyed immediately.

He stood, left his room, and went to the family room.

Haruto was there, reading the preliminary summary Moriyama had sent.

Sayuri sat beside him with tea untouched.

Both looked up.

Rei stopped at the threshold.

The room was warm.

Safe enough.

Not perfectly safe.

Nothing was.

Sayuri opened one arm without speaking.

Rei crossed the room and sat beside her.

Not collapsing.

Not crying.

Only sitting close enough that her sleeve brushed his shoulder.

Haruto set the report aside.

No one asked him to speak.

After a while, Rei said “The room kept watching the door”

Sayuri’s hand covered his.

Haruto’s voice was quiet.

“Now someone else will watch the room”

Rei nodded.

It was not enough.

It was something.

The System had called it a Trusted Anchor recommendation.

The System was not wrong.

It was still rude.

Rei stayed there until the tea went cold.

Outside, Kyoto moved on.

Somewhere, the file began its slow climb through desks, stamps, categories, and adults who might prefer not to understand what children had written plainly.

Somewhere in Tokyo, Satoru Gojo was probably being watched too closely for different reasons and not closely enough for the right ones.

In the Mikage estate, Rei sat between his parents and let the first real room remain real.

He did not put it down.

Not yet.

But for that night, at least, he did not carry it alone.
