Rei woke before dawn because his hand hurt.

That was the simple version.

The less simple version was that his hand hurt in the shape of a door.

Not an open one. Not anymore. The System had confirmed there was no active anchor, no parasitic route, no lingering invitation waiting under the skin. Haruto had checked the wound three times with mundane care and once with cursed energy held so far from Rei’s body that it felt less like treatment and more like a question asked from the other side of a river. Sayuri had traced the air around his palm without touching, Amana-trained eyes following the folded edge until she was satisfied that whatever had tried to turn him into an agreement had failed.

The wound was shallow.

The consequences were not.

Rei lay on his futon with the bandaged hand resting above the blanket and watched the ceiling slowly become visible in the gray before morning. The house was quiet. Not peaceful. Houses after danger never slept normally. Floors remembered footsteps. Barriers remembered pressure. Parents behind walls pretended not to check on their children too often.

Under the loose floorboard beside his bed, the ugly stamp sat wrapped in cloth.

Inside the barrier notation manual, Satoru’s bookmark and last note waited between pages.

I still saw you.

Four words.

Not a threat.

Not comfort.

Not even a question.

Worse.

A fact.

Rei had pressed the stamp beneath his own line the night before.

Being seen does not end hiding.

It changes who the hiding hurts.

The words had felt plain when he wrote them.

In the morning, they felt unfinished.

He dressed slowly.

The bandage made everything clumsy. Tying his sleeve took too long. Folding his collar one-handed was possible but irritating. Adjusting the visible level of cursed energy around an injury was worse, because too much stillness looked false and too much disturbance looked like weakness that would invite questions. He settled on tired restraint with mild pain leakage and a slight delay in the left wrist response.

Believable.

Useful.

Infuriating.

When he entered the family room, Haruto was already awake.

Of course.

Sayuri was pouring tea.

Also of course.

The tea survived.

That felt like mercy.

Haruto looked at Rei’s hand.

“Pain?”

“Yes”

“Sharp?”

“Only if I move the fingers too quickly”

“Cold?”

“Less than last night”

“Door sensation?”

“No”

Sayuri set a cup in front of him.

“Lie?”

“No”

Haruto watched him for another second.

Then nodded.

“Instruction today will be limited”

Rei sat.

“Moriyama-sensei will decide that”

“I already spoke with her”

Rei looked up.

Haruto’s face was calm.

Too calm.

“You spoke with Moriyama-sensei before breakfast?”

“Yes”

“About me?”

“Yes”

Sayuri sat opposite him.

“He also spoke with Oda”

Rei turned.

“Oda-san?”

Haruto said “And Kitahara”

Rei stared at him.

His father lifted his cup.

“I woke early”

Sayuri smiled faintly.

“He woke angry”

“That is not inaccurate”

Rei looked into his tea.

“What did you decide?”

Haruto’s cup stopped halfway to his mouth.

“We did not decide for you”

That was not the answer Rei expected.

Sayuri’s voice was gentle.

“Not this time”

The room shifted.

Small words.

Large meaning.

Rei looked at her.

Haruto set the cup down.

“You need a conversation with the cohort”

Rei’s fingers tightened under the table.

The injured hand reminded him not to do that.

“I know”

“Do you?”

Rei almost smiled despite everything.

“No”

Haruto accepted the correction.

“Better”

Sayuri leaned forward.

“Akiha’s question does not go away because the answer is difficult”

“I know”

This time Haruto let it pass.

Rei looked at the steam rising from his tea.

“He saw something she cannot know”

“Yes” Sayuri said

“She still helped protect the mask before that”

“Yes”

“And now I have to ask her to continue without giving her the thing that would make continuing fair”

Haruto’s voice was quiet.

“You cannot make it fair by bleeding more truth than is safe”

Rei closed his eyes.

“That is not what I want”

“No” Haruto said “But guilt is inventive”

Sayuri added “And clever children make beautiful cages when they are ashamed”

Rei opened his eyes.

The tea blurred for a second.

He hated that.

He hated more that they noticed and said nothing.

“What do I tell them?” he asked

Haruto answered “The truth about their position”

“Not the secret”

“No”

Sayuri’s gaze stayed on him.

“You tell them what changed. You tell them what risks now touch them. You tell them what you can promise, what you cannot promise, and what you are asking of them. Then you let them answer without punishing them for not being comfortable”

Rei swallowed.

“And if they step away?”

Haruto’s expression did not soften.

“Then they step away”

The words hurt.

They were supposed to.

Sayuri reached across the table and touched the edge of his cup, not his hand.

“Keeping someone close by making the cost unclear is another way to own them”

There it was.

The blade.

Rei looked down.

“Yes”

Haruto stood.

“Moriyama will give you the room after first period”

Rei looked up.

“You arranged it?”

Haruto’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“I arranged the space. Not the outcome”

A distinction.

Important.

Still adult.

Still useful.

Still something Rei would have to decide whether to resent later.

For now, he bowed his head.

“Thank you”

Haruto looked uncomfortable.

Sayuri smiled into her tea.

“Accept gracefully” she said

Haruto looked at her.

“I know how to accept thanks”

“You looked like someone handed you a cursed frog”

Rei almost laughed.

Haruto looked at him.

“Do not laugh while injured”

That made it worse.

By the time Rei arrived at instruction, the entire preliminary hall already knew something had happened and did not know enough to gossip accurately.

That was the worst stage of rumor.

The older students glanced at his bandage. The younger ones tried not to. One boy from another group whispered “threshold accident” with the delighted horror of someone who had never met a real one. A girl near the rear table corrected him and said “mislabeled object” as if that made the event cleaner.

Rei kept walking.

Akiha was at their usual table.

Tomonari sat beside her, spine straight, hands folded, expression composed enough to be political.

Daigo was not sitting.

He was pacing.

Badly.

When he saw Rei, he stopped too abruptly.

“You look alive”

Rei sat down.

“I practiced”

Daigo scowled.

“Do not be weird before breakfast settles”

Tomonari looked at Rei’s bandage.

“Does the injury affect writing?”

“Yes”

Daigo pointed at him.

“Good. Less writing”

Akiha did not say anything.

She looked at Rei’s hand once.

Then at his face.

Then down at her slate.

That was worse than every possible question.

Moriyama entered before the silence could become too large.

She carried no pointer.

The hall noticed.

Daigo whispered “That is bad”

Tomonari whispered “Or deliberate”

Daigo whispered “Those are the same”

Moriyama reached the front.

“First period will be review of yesterday’s official student-facing report. No speculation on restricted matters. No questions outside your classification. No theatrical concern. No heroic embellishment”

Daigo muttered “There goes my plan”

Moriyama looked at him.

“Zenin”

“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”

“Your plan was likely poor”

“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”

The hall relaxed by a fraction.

Rei did not.

Moriyama distributed copies of the report.

Clean paper.

Clean wording.

Clean enough to survive.

Not clean enough to forgive.

Rei read it with the others.

Unexpected threshold response.

Listed inactive object.

Student identified hazard.

Initial vector intercepted.

Object contained.

No further student handling authorized.

The words were not false.

That was the problem. False words could be fought directly. True words that left out the shape of the wound required more careful anger.

Akiha read without moving.

Daigo read too fast and then had to reread because he had missed the important part.

Tomonari read once, then began quietly marking the phrases most likely to become official anchors.

Moriyama asked for observations.

A student from another table said “The report protects the students from questioning”

Moriyama nodded.

“Yes”

Another said “It does not identify the listing clerk”

“Yes”

Daigo raised his hand.

Moriyama looked surprised, which he clearly hated.

“Zenin”

“It says Mikage assisted in containment”

“Yes”

“That makes it sound like someone else did most of it”

Rei went still.

Akiha’s eyes lifted.

Tomonari stopped writing.

Moriyama watched Daigo.

“Continue”

Daigo looked irritated that he had been invited to have a thought in public.

“He identified it. He got hit. He contained it. Maybe adults helped after. But assisted sounds like he was holding paper for someone”

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

The hall quieted.

Rei wanted to disappear.

Not because Daigo was wrong.

Because Daigo was defending him.

Badly.

Honestly.

In front of everyone.

Moriyama said “Why might the report use that word?”

Daigo scowled.

“Because saying he contained it makes people ask why he could”

The room shifted.

There it was.

Plain.

Too plain.

Akiha’s fingers tightened on her slate.

Tomonari looked down.

Rei’s bandaged hand pulsed.

Moriyama held Daigo’s gaze.

“Yes”

Daigo blinked.

Moriyama continued “The report reduces precision to reduce secondary inquiry. This protects Mikage and obscures his role. Both facts matter”

Daigo’s jaw moved.

He did not like it.

Good.

He should not.

Akiha raised her hand.

Moriyama looked at her.

“Suda”

“Who decides how much obscuring is protection?”

The question entered the hall and made itself larger than the report.

Moriyama did not answer quickly.

When she did, her voice was quieter.

“Usually adults”

Akiha’s face remained calm.

“That was not my question”

A very small sound escaped someone near the back.

Fear or admiration.

Possibly both.

Moriyama’s scar twitched.

“No. It was not”

She set her copy of the report down.

“In this case, the initial student-facing report was drafted by me, Oda, Kitahara, and the family witnesses. It was shaped to prevent uncontrolled questioning of children, preserve the restricted chain, and avoid creating a record that invites interest in things the report cannot safely explain”

Akiha did not look away.

“And the people obscured by it?”

Moriyama looked at Rei.

Then back at Akiha.

“That is why you will have a private room after first period”

The hall went silent.

Daigo whispered “Subtle”

Tomonari whispered “Not now”

Rei looked down at the report.

The rest of first period passed like walking over frozen water.

Nothing broke.

That did not make it safe.

The private room was not a room.

It was Oda’s secondary archive closet.

Calling it a closet was generous. It had a low table, five cushions, three shelves of damaged ledgers, and one narrow window too high to see through. It smelled like dust, ink, and secrets that had died of improper labeling.

Oda unlocked it herself.

Then stood aside.

“No vows”

Rei looked at her.

“What?”

“No Binding Vows. No dramatic promises. No children turning guilt into law in my archive”

Moriyama, behind her, said “That was already my warning”

Oda did not look at her.

“Then consider this preservation”

Daigo frowned.

“Are we likely to accidentally make a vow?”

Oda looked at him.

“You? Less likely”

Daigo relaxed.

Oda added “You usually damage language before it becomes binding”

Akiha made a sound that was almost a laugh.

Tomonari covered his mouth.

Daigo glared at everyone.

Moriyama pointed into the room.

“Speak. No adults inside”

Rei looked at her.

She said “Do not look grateful. It makes me want to reconsider”

He entered.

Akiha followed.

Tomonari.

Daigo.

The door closed.

Not locked.

That mattered.

For a moment, no one sat.

Then Daigo dropped onto a cushion with no grace.

“This room sucks”

Tomonari sat properly.

“It is not designed for comfort”

Daigo looked around.

“It achieved that”

Akiha remained standing.

Rei sat last.

His bandaged hand rested on his knee.

The silence returned.

This time, no adult could interrupt it.

Akiha spoke first.

“He saw you”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

“Enough to make a vow”

“Yes”

Daigo leaned forward.

“What vow?”

Rei looked at him.

Daigo’s expression was hard.

Not curious.

Demanding.

Tomonari’s voice was careful.

“We do not need the hidden content to know the terms that affect us”

Akiha said “We do need to know whether the vow makes us blind in a way that changes our risk”

Rei breathed.

In.

Hold.

Out.

“The vow is Satoru’s. Not mine. It prevents him from revealing what he saw beneath my mask during the incident. Directly or indirectly. Not through reports, adults, or jokes. It lasts until I choose to reveal my true nature by my own will”

Daigo stared.

Tomonari’s face went pale.

Akiha closed her eyes.

Only for a second.

Then opened them.

“Your true nature”

“Yes”

Daigo said “That is a horrible phrase”

“Yes”

“Did you choose it?”

“Yes”

“Why?”

“Because anything narrower left holes”

Tomonari murmured “And anything broader would bind too much”

Rei nodded.

Akiha sat down slowly.

“Satoru knows enough that the phrase is accurate”

Rei did not answer.

He did not need to.

Daigo rubbed both hands over his face.

“I hate this”

No one corrected him.

He looked at Rei through his fingers.

“Is it dangerous to stand near you?”

The question had no elegance.

That was why it worked.

Rei answered the same way.

“Sometimes”

Daigo lowered his hands.

“Is it more dangerous than yesterday?”

Rei thought.

“No”

Daigo frowned.

“Do not answer like a report”

“I am not. Yesterday was already dangerous. You only know more today”

Daigo stared.

Then looked away.

“That is a terrible answer”

“Yes”

Tomonari asked “Are we endangered by knowing that Satoru made the vow?”

Rei looked at him.

“Possibly”

“Clarify”

“If someone learns you know there is a vow, they may wonder what required one. But the vow itself is not public. Adults present likely suspect or know something happened, but not everyone has terms”

Akiha said “Moriyama knows enough”

“Yes”

“Oda?”

“Yes”

“Your parents?”

“Yes”

“Kitahara?”

“Likely less”

“Gojo attendants?”

“No”

Tomonari folded his hands tighter.

“Satoru’s family?”

Rei’s stomach tightened.

“I do not know”

Daigo swore under his breath.

Akiha looked at Rei’s hand.

“Can Satoru tell them there is a vow?”

Rei paused.

That was a good question.

A dangerous one.

“The terms did not forbid him from saying a vow exists”

Tomonari’s expression sharpened.

“But saying a vow exists may indirectly reveal that he saw something worth binding”

Akiha said “Then the vow may limit it by implication”

Rei nodded slowly.

“Maybe”

Daigo looked furious.

“Maybe?”

“It depends on how the vow interprets indirect disclosure”

Tomonari looked toward the closed door.

“We need an adult who understands vows”

Daigo pointed at him.

“No vows. Oda said”

“Understanding is not making”

Akiha looked at Rei.

“Do you know enough?”

Rei almost said yes.

Stopped.

“No”

That earned him three different looks.

Daigo’s was startled.

Tomonari’s was worried.

Akiha’s was something like exhausted approval.

“Good” she said

Rei almost laughed.

“You sound like my father”

She did not smile.

“I am trying not to sound like your keeper”

There.

The sentence cut the room in half.

Daigo went silent.

Tomonari looked down.

Rei could not look away from her.

Akiha continued “Because that is what I have been becoming without naming it”

“No”

The word came too fast.

Her eyes hardened.

Rei closed his mouth.

Akiha said “I correct you before you slip. I watch your sleeves. I notice when your breathing is placed wrong. I help make you believable in front of adults. I agreed to some of that. I chose some of it. But after yesterday, I need to know whether I am helping you hide or helping everyone else survive what you hide”

Rei’s throat felt tight.

“Both”

She nodded.

“That is the problem”

Daigo looked between them.

“I do not understand half of this and I still hate it”

Tomonari spoke quietly.

“Akiha is asking whether her role is protective, deceptive, or operational”

Daigo glared.

“That did not help”

Akiha did not look at Tomonari.

“I am asking whether Rei gets to decide that every time”

Rei looked at his bandage.

The white cloth had a faint red line beneath the top layer.

His hand hurt less than the truth.

“No”

Akiha waited.

He forced himself to continue.

“I have been deciding too much alone”

Daigo muttered “Finally”

Rei looked at him.

Daigo did not look away.

“You have”

“Yes”

Tomonari said “Some unilateral decisions were necessary”

Akiha looked at him.

Tomonari held up one hand.

“I am not defending all of them. I am clarifying that if we treat every hidden decision as betrayal, we make future action impossible”

Akiha’s expression remained sharp.

“I know”

Tomonari nodded.

“Then we need categories”

Daigo groaned.

“Of course you would say that”

Tomonari ignored him.

“Not of Rei’s secret. Of our involvement”

Akiha looked at Rei.

Rei nodded.

“Agreed”

Daigo pointed at him again.

“No making this sound official enough for adults to steal”

Rei blinked.

Then nodded again.

“Agreed”

They sat with that.

The first category came from Daigo.

Of course it did.

“If something is going to hit us, we get to know”

Tomonari opened his mouth.

Daigo turned on him.

“No. Do not make it prettier”

Tomonari closed his mouth.

Akiha said “That one stands”

Rei nodded.

“If my hidden abilities, limits, or enemies create immediate physical danger for you, I have to tell you enough to act”

Daigo frowned.

“That was prettier”

“Too pretty?”

“No. Annoyingly useful”

Tomonari said “Second. If we are expected to correct visible behavior, we need to know what kind of correction is real”

Akiha’s gaze flicked to Rei.

“Yes”

Rei asked “What does that mean?”

She answered “If I touch your sleeve because your mask is slipping, I need to know whether I am correcting posture, panic, cursed energy, injury, or something I should not touch”

Rei went cold.

He had not thought of it that way.

Which was the point.

“Yes”

Daigo said “Third. If Gojo is involved, we get told before he appears if you know”

Rei looked at him.

Daigo looked back.

“What? He makes the air stupid”

Tomonari said “He alters observation conditions”

Daigo pointed.

“That. Worse words, same thing”

Akiha nodded.

“If Satoru’s presence changes your control, we need warning”

Rei did not correct the name.

None of them missed that.

He said “Yes”

Tomonari’s voice softened.

“Fourth. If there are things we are not allowed to know, you say that directly instead of giving answers designed to quiet us”

Rei looked at Akiha.

She looked back.

“That one is mine too” she said

He nodded.

“Yes”

Daigo leaned back.

“This is horrible”

Akiha said “It is better than yesterday”

“Barely”

“Barely matters”

Tomonari took one of Oda’s discarded practice slips from the shelf.

“We should write it”

Daigo recoiled.

“Absolutely not”

Akiha said “Not as a contract”

Rei looked at the paper.

Oda’s warning echoed.

No vows.

No children turning guilt into law.

“We can write notes” Rei said

“Not promises”

Tomonari nodded.

“Operational understanding”

Daigo stared.

“Tomonari”

He paused.

Then corrected himself.

“Fine. Shared expectations”

Daigo relaxed slightly.

“Less awful”

Akiha took the slip.

Her handwriting was clean.

She wrote slowly, reading each line aloud.

“First. If Rei’s hidden circumstances create immediate physical danger to us, he tells us enough to act”

No one objected.

“Second. If we are expected to correct his visible behavior, we are allowed to ask what kind of correction is needed”

Rei swallowed.

“Yes”

“Third. If Satoru Gojo’s presence is known in advance and changes risk, we are told before the room happens”

Daigo said “Write Gojo and not Satoru”

Akiha looked at Rei.

Rei understood.

Public condition.

Not private name.

“Yes. Gojo”

She wrote it that way.

“Fourth. If Rei cannot answer, he says he cannot answer. He does not give us a quieting answer”

Tomonari said “Quieting answer is imprecise”

Daigo glared.

Tomonari paused.

Then said “But understandable”

Akiha wrote it.

Then set the brush down.

The list was short.

Too short for what it carried.

Rei looked at it.

“It is not enough”

Akiha said “It is a beginning”

Daigo muttered “Do we have to sign it?”

Oda’s voice came through the door.

“No”

All four children startled.

Daigo shouted “Were you listening?”

Oda opened the door.

“Yes”

Moriyama stood behind her.

Also listening.

Naturally.

Daigo looked betrayed.

“This was private”

Oda looked at the slip.

“It was in my archive”

“That is not how privacy works”

“It is how archives work”

Moriyama stepped inside far enough to see the paper.

Her gaze moved over the lines.

She said nothing for long enough that Rei began to worry.

Then she looked at Akiha.

“Good”

Akiha lowered her head.

“Thank you, Moriyama-sensei”

Moriyama looked at Rei.

“You will fail this”

Rei nodded.

“Probably”

Daigo said “Encouraging”

Moriyama continued “Then they will remind you. If you punish them for reminding you, I will become involved”

Rei looked up.

“That sounds like a threat”

“It is instruction with consequences”

Oda snorted.

“Threat”

Moriyama ignored her.

Tomonari looked at the paper.

“Should the adults keep a copy?”

All three children said “No” at once.

Tomonari blinked.

Then nodded.

“Understood”

Akiha folded the slip once and held it out to Rei.

He did not take it.

She frowned.

“It is yours”

“No”

The room stilled.

Rei looked at the folded paper.

“It should not be mine. If it is mine, it becomes another thing I keep and interpret”

Akiha’s expression changed.

Daigo said “Then who keeps it?”

Tomonari said “Not an adult”

Oda looked offended for form’s sake.

Akiha looked down at the paper.

Then held it out to Daigo.

He recoiled.

“Why me?”

“Because you will complain if Rei violates it”

“I complain anyway”

“Exactly”

Daigo stared at the folded slip like it was cursed.

Then took it with two fingers.

“This is a terrible idea”

Moriyama said “That may be why it works”

Daigo tucked it inside his sleeve with visible disgust.

“If I die because of a paper, I am haunting all of you”

Oda said “File a haunting notice first”

Daigo looked at her.

“I hate archives”

“Archives endure”

Rei almost laughed.

This time, it did not hurt as much.

The day should have ended there.

It did not.

Days that began with boundaries often attracted people who disliked them.

In the afternoon, a Gojo messenger arrived.

Not Satoru.

A messenger.

Formal robes. Controlled posture. Polite face. No visible fear until he saw Moriyama and Oda standing in the same room, which proved he had survival instincts.

He requested audience with Haruto Mikage and Sayuri Mikage regarding the previous day’s incident and the Gojo heir’s proximity to the event.

He did not request Rei.

That was how Rei knew the request was about him.

Moriyama sent a runner to the Mikage estate.

Oda made the messenger wait in the archive reception room under a shelf labeled Unresolved Handling Errors

Daigo enjoyed that too much.

Rei was not supposed to be present when Haruto and Sayuri arrived.

He was also not supposed to stand in the corridor outside with Akiha, Daigo, and Tomonari while pretending to sort damaged tags.

Moriyama saw them.

She said nothing.

Which was permission in the dialect of terrible teachers.

The reception room door was not fully closed.

Rei could hear the voices.

The messenger began with concern.

Concern was always dangerous when delivered by someone else’s household.

“The Gojo household expresses appreciation for Kyoto’s handling of yesterday’s unexpected incident”

Haruto answered “Your appreciation is noted”

No warmth.

Good.

The messenger continued “Given Satoru-sama’s presence and the possibility of event stress affecting student perception, the household requests clarification regarding any unusual statements, vows, or informal exchanges that may have occurred during the containment aftermath”

Akiha’s hand froze over a tag.

Daigo’s face darkened.

Tomonari went very still.

Rei’s injured palm began to hurt again.

Sayuri’s voice came through the door.

“How carefully worded”

The messenger paused.

“I beg your pardon?”

“It sounded practiced. I was appreciating the effort”

Rei could imagine her smile.

The messenger probably could not.

That was his problem.

Haruto said “No clarification is required beyond the filed reports”

“Satoru-sama may have been exposed to an emotionally charged scene involving a minor student”

Sayuri said “He was exposed to a mislabeled threshold object in a supervised instructional environment”

The messenger’s voice tightened.

“The household’s concern is that Satoru-sama may have made a spontaneous declaration under pressure”

Silence.

Akiha looked at Rei.

Daigo’s hand moved toward the folded paper in his sleeve, as if a list of shared expectations could be used as a weapon.

Tomonari whispered “They suspect”

Rei whispered “Yes”

Inside, Haruto answered.

“If the Gojo household has concerns regarding Gojo-sama’s statements, it may ask Gojo-sama”

The messenger said “Satoru-sama has declined elaboration”

Oda’s voice entered the conversation.

Delightedly flat.

“Wise child”

The messenger sounded less controlled.

“With respect, Archivist Oda, the matter may involve cross-family implications”

Oda said “Many foolish things do”

Moriyama added “Yesterday’s student-facing and restricted reports are complete”

“The household is not asking for restricted report contents”

Sayuri said “No. It is asking whether there is something around the report that it cannot read”

The hallway felt colder.

Rei’s chest tightened.

The messenger did not answer immediately.

Then he said “The household has a duty to ensure Satoru-sama is not bound by inappropriate influence”

Bound.

There it was.

Not vow.

But near enough to touch it.

Haruto’s voice became very quiet.

“Be careful”

The messenger stopped.

Sayuri’s voice lost all softness.

“If you are suggesting my injured son manipulated Satoru Gojo into a binding condition after intercepting a mislabeled threshold hazard in a room full of adults, say so plainly”

Rei felt the corridor tilt.

Daigo whispered something obscene.

Tomonari looked horrified and impressed.

Akiha did not move.

Inside the room, the messenger chose life.

“I am making no accusation”

“No” Sayuri said “You are placing one where it may be retrieved later”

Oda said “Accurate”

Moriyama said “Unfortunately”

Haruto spoke again.

“The Mikage household will not provide speculation on private statements made by another family’s child. The filed reports stand. If the Gojo household wishes to challenge them, it may do so formally and accept formal review of the object listing chain, the inactive classification, the absence of proper hazard notation, and the decision to place Satoru Gojo in proximity to a student exercise after the review had supposedly concluded”

The messenger said nothing.

Rei breathed quietly.

Haruto continued “Does the Gojo household wish to challenge the reports?”

The silence stretched.

Then the messenger said “No”

Sayuri’s voice warmed by one degree.

“How disciplined”

The messenger left ten minutes later with less dignity than he had arrived with and more survival than he deserved.

Rei and the others were still holding archive tags in the hallway.

Oda passed them as she escorted the messenger out.

She looked at Daigo’s hands.

“Those are upside down”

Daigo looked down.

“So?”

“They have been upside down for twelve minutes”

Akiha covered her mouth.

Tomonari looked at the wall.

Rei looked at the floor.

Daigo said “I was emotionally sorting”

Oda paused.

Then said “Acceptable”

Daigo looked like he had won a war he did not understand.

After the messenger left, Haruto and Sayuri found Rei in the corridor.

Naturally.

Haruto looked at the four children.

“You heard”

Rei said “Yes”

Daigo said “No”

Everyone looked at him.

He crossed his arms.

“I mean, we heard nothing useful enough to report”

Sayuri smiled.

“An important distinction”

Tomonari bowed slightly.

“The tags were absorbing most of our attention”

Oda said “They were not”

Tomonari said “No, Oda-san”

Akiha looked at Rei.

“They think he was bound”

“Yes”

“They do not know the terms”

“No”

“They will keep trying”

“Yes”

Daigo touched his sleeve where the folded expectation list sat.

“Then the third line matters”

Rei looked at him.

If Gojo’s presence is known in advance and changes risk, we are told before the room happens.

Daigo scowled.

“What? I can remember paper I hate”

Akiha’s expression softened.

Only a little.

Tomonari said “We may need another line”

Daigo groaned.

“No”

Akiha asked “Which?”

Tomonari looked toward the door where the Gojo messenger had left.

“If adults ask questions about one of us, the others should know that the question was asked”

Rei looked down.

That line mattered.

Not because of him only.

Because of them.

Akiha nodded.

“Yes”

Daigo muttered “Fine. But I am not keeping a second paper”

Oda said “Use the back”

Daigo looked personally attacked by efficiency.

That evening, Rei wrote to Satoru.

Not because he felt ready.

Because the Gojo household had sent a messenger, and silence would become another room for adults to decorate.

He sat in the family room with Haruto, Sayuri, and his bandaged hand. The letter was short because writing hurt and because too many words would try to become clever.

Satoru,

A messenger came.

They asked whether there were unusual statements, vows, or informal exchanges after the incident.

My parents refused to give them anything useful.

Oda called you wise.

This may be the most suspicious part of the event.

Rei

P.S. The cohort made rules about what I have to tell them.

P.P.S. Daigo is keeping the paper.

P.P.P.S. This is also suspicious.

Haruto read it.

Sayuri read it.

Haruto pointed at the second postscript.

“Why include that?”

Rei said “Because it is true, harmless, and funny enough to keep the letter from sounding like a report”

Sayuri said “He is right”

Haruto looked pained.

“I know”

The letter went by the old route.

Not formal.

Not obvious.

Not clean.

Two days passed.

During those two days, Akiha did not become easier with him.

Good.

She corrected him when his sleeve sat wrong. She asked what kind of correction was needed when his cursed energy tightened during a residue drill. He answered. Once, he said “I cannot answer” and she accepted it with a nod so sharp it hurt worse than anger.

Daigo checked the paper three times and pretended not to.

Tomonari proposed adding index marks.

Daigo threatened to burn it.

Oda said burning paper was a valid archival event if properly documented.

Moriyama gave them drills that required asking for clarification before acting. Everyone hated them. Everyone improved.

On the third evening, Satoru’s reply arrived inside a folded practice sheet on household seal etiquette.

Rei found this deeply suspicious.

He opened it under Haruto’s supervision because everyone had apparently decided his life was now a committee.

Rei,

They asked me too.

I said I made several unusual statements because I am unusual and statements happen when people speak.

They did not like that.

I did not tell them anything useful.

Oda is wise for calling me wise.

Tell Daigo that keeping the paper makes him important and this is very funny.

Do not actually tell him if it ruins the paper.

Satoru

P.S. Your cohort made rules because you are bad at being hidden around people who care.

P.P.S. That sentence was not a disclosure. I checked.

Rei read the final line twice.

Then a third time.

I checked.

That meant Satoru had felt the vow.

Had tested its edge, perhaps.

Had learned where language began to pull.

Haruto’s gaze sharpened when he read it.

Sayuri’s face became still.

Rei looked down at the letter.

“He is learning the shape of the vow”

Haruto said “Yes”

Sayuri said “And telling you so”

“That is good?”

Haruto answered “It is honest”

Sayuri added “It is dangerous”

Both true.

Rei folded the letter.

“I need to tell Daigo?”

Haruto looked at him.

“You are asking because of the paper”

“Yes”

Sayuri smiled faintly.

“Then ask Daigo”

Rei blinked.

That was obvious.

Apparently he had not planned to do it.

The next morning, Rei asked.

Daigo stared at him for several seconds after hearing the message.

Then said “Absolutely not”

Rei nodded.

“I will not tell Satoru that it made you important”

Daigo’s face changed.

“What?”

“That was the part you rejected”

“No. I rejected all of it”

“The paper line?”

Daigo scowled.

Akiha watched with terrifying interest.

Tomonari looked like he was observing a rare diplomatic ritual.

Daigo muttered “You can say the paper survived”

Rei nodded.

“Only that?”

“And that I hate him”

Akiha said “Do you?”

Daigo looked offended.

“Obviously”

Tomonari said “That is not obvious”

Daigo pointed at him.

“You are on thin ice”

Rei wrote later:

Satoru,

The paper survived.

Daigo hates you.

Rei

Satoru’s reply came five days later.

Rei,

Good.

Satoru

Daigo claimed to be insulted by how short it was.

He kept the paper anyway.

The real conversation with Akiha happened a week after the box.

Not in the archive.

Not in the training hall.

In the courtyard after rain, where the stones shone dark and the air smelled like wet leaves and old wood.

Akiha walked beside Rei without saying anything for long enough that the silence became intentional.

Finally, she said “I am still angry”

Rei looked ahead.

“I know”

“Do not sound relieved”

He stopped.

She stopped too.

Her face was calm.

Hurt, but calm.

Rei said “I am not relieved that you are angry”

“Yes you are”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Akiha continued “If I am angry, I am still here. That is easier for you than wondering if I will leave”

The sentence struck exactly where he had been hiding from himself.

He looked down.

“Yes”

Akiha nodded.

“Better”

Rainwater slid from the eaves behind them.

Rei’s bandaged hand throbbed faintly.

“I do not want you to stay because leaving feels impossible”

Akiha looked at him for a long moment.

“Then stop making staying useful before you make it honest”

He flinched.

She saw.

Good.

“I do not know how” he said

“I know”

No cruelty.

No softness.

Truth.

Akiha turned toward the wet courtyard.

“When Gojo looks at you, you become more real and less safe”

Rei said nothing.

She continued “When we look at you, you become safer and less real”

That was worse.

Much worse.

Rei could barely breathe around it.

Akiha looked back at him.

“I am not asking to see what he saw”

He swallowed.

“I know”

“I am asking not to become the place where you hide from being seen”

There it was.

Cleaner than any report.

Sharper than any accusation.

Rei bowed his head.

Not formally.

Not enough to make it a performance.

“I am sorry”

Akiha did not answer immediately.

Then she said “I know”

He almost laughed at the echo.

Did not.

After a moment, she added “I am not forgiving you today”

“That is fair”

“I may not tomorrow either”

“That is also fair”

“But I am staying”

He looked up.

She held his gaze.

“Because I chose this before it became fair, and I am choosing it again while knowing more about how unfair it is”

Rei’s throat hurt.

“That sounds like a vow”

Akiha’s eyes narrowed.

“No”

He almost smiled.

“Good”

“It is a decision. Do not romanticize it”

“I will try”

“Try harder”

He nodded.

They stood in the wet courtyard while the world smelled clean in the temporary way rain made possible before people started touching everything again.

Akiha looked toward the training hall.

“One more condition”

Rei turned.

“If Gojo sees more, and it changes my risk, you tell me before I have to ask”

“Yes”

“No quieting answer”

“No quieting answer”

“No making Daigo explain the obvious because you are scared”

Rei blinked.

“That happened once”

“It will happen again if allowed”

He considered arguing.

Did not.

“Yes”

She nodded.

“Good”

From the covered walkway, Daigo shouted “Are you done being emotionally weird?”

Akiha closed her eyes.

Tomonari’s voice followed “That was not tactful”

Daigo shouted back “I waited”

Rei looked at Akiha.

She looked at him.

Then, very unexpectedly, she laughed.

Not much.

Enough.

Rei laughed too.

His hand hurt.

The laugh stayed.

That night, the System opened while Rei was changing the bandage.

[Distributed Public Self Construct update]

Cohort involvement renegotiated.

New safeguards established:

- immediate physical danger disclosure

- correction-purpose clarification

- Gojo-presence risk warning

- direct refusal over quieting answer

- adult questioning notification

Effect:

Distributed Public Self Construct no longer functions solely as concealment support.

Updated classification:

Reciprocal Risk-Bearing Cohort

Masking Protocol: 96%

Soul Perception / Soul Resistance: 28%

Binding Vow Aptitude: 10%

Rei stared at the words.

Reciprocal Risk-Bearing Cohort.

That sounded too formal.

Also true.

A warning followed.

[Warning]

Reciprocity increases stability.

Reciprocity also increases consequence.

Failure to disclose relevant risk may damage trust anchors more severely than external exposure.

Rei closed the System.

He looked at the ugly stamp.

Then at the folded notes.

Then at the bandage.

For once, he did not write about Satoru first.

He opened his notebook and wrote:

Akiha said:

Do not make me the place where you hide from being seen.

This is more dangerous than Gojo seeing beneath the mask.

Because Gojo made a vow after seeing.

Akiha chose to stay without seeing.

He stopped.

Then wrote:

That may be harder to deserve.

He did not stamp the line.

It was already plain enough.
