The first consequence of the Binding Vow was not mystical.

It was paperwork.

Rei found that insulting.

He sat on a low bench outside the auxiliary storehouse with his left palm wrapped in three layers of clean cloth, his right hand resting in his lap, and his whole body arranged into the posture of a child who had been injured in a controlled instructional accident rather than a child whose hidden power had opened under the Six Eyes and been caught behind a vow made by the strongest boy in the country.

The posture was convincing.

That made him hate it.

The storehouse door stood half open. Inside, adult voices moved around the covered box, the altered seals, and the report that would decide what the incident was allowed to become. Moriyama’s voice cut through the others in short, practical lines. Oda’s came rarely and always made the room worse for someone. Kitahara sounded angrier than Rei had ever heard her. Haruto and Sayuri had remained inside for the first reconstruction because family observers had witnessed the injury and because no one was foolish enough to suggest Sayuri Mikage leave a room before she chose to.

Satoru had been moved to the outer courtyard.

Not dismissed.

Not removed.

Moved.

There was a difference, and everyone pretended the difference was logistical rather than political.

He stood under the eaves with his attendants finally returned to their proper function of looking terrified and useless. His glasses were back in place. His hands were tucked inside his sleeves. He had the expression of a boy who had already been told three different versions of what he should say and had rejected all of them because none were amusing enough.

Every so often, he looked toward Rei.

Not deeply.

Not with the Six Eyes pressing.

Just looked.

The restraint was obvious now.

That was worse.

Before, Rei had feared being seen.

Now he could feel the line where Satoru chose not to look harder.

A vow was not a wall.

It was a hand held against one.

Daigo sat beside Rei on the bench because no one had told him not to loudly enough.

Akiha stood in front of them, arms folded, silent in a way that made Rei more nervous than Daigo’s presence.

Tomonari was near the storehouse entrance, listening to the adult voices without appearing to listen, which was either Kamo training or a personal talent honed by exposure to bad decisions.

Daigo stared at Rei’s wrapped hand.

“Does it hurt?”

“Yes”

“Good”

Akiha turned her head.

Daigo scowled.

“What? If it did not hurt, that would be worse”

Rei looked at him.

“That was almost thoughtful”

“Do not start”

Tomonari said from near the door “It was also medically imprecise”

Daigo turned.

“I was not giving medical advice”

“Good”

Daigo looked ready to stand up.

Rei said “Please do not fight Tomonari while I am bleeding”

Daigo froze.

Then sat back down with visible resentment.

“I am being considerate because you are injured. Remember this”

“I will record it”

“Do not”

Akiha did not laugh.

That was the problem.

Rei looked up at her.

She was watching the bandage, not his face. Her hands remained folded into her sleeves, but her right thumb pressed against the seam of her left cuff hard enough to leave a crease.

“Akiha”

She looked at him then.

The expression was controlled.

Too controlled.

That made it worse.

“He saw something”

Daigo went still.

Tomonari stopped pretending not to listen.

Rei did not answer quickly.

The easy answer would have been no. The safe answer would have been something partial enough to sound true. The cruel answer would have been later.

The honest answer was worse than all three.

“Yes”

Akiha’s face did not change.

“What kind of something?”

Rei looked at the storehouse door.

Then at Satoru across the courtyard.

The vow pulled nowhere. It was not his vow. It was Satoru’s. The restriction did not bind Rei’s tongue.

That made the choice his.

Akiha understood that before he spoke.

Her eyes sharpened.

“You can tell me”

Daigo’s gaze moved between them.

Tomonari said nothing.

Rei swallowed.

“I can”

Akiha waited.

The silence became heavier than the question.

Rei said “Not here”

Akiha’s mouth tightened.

It was not a refusal.

It was not acceptance either.

Daigo looked at Rei.

“Is it bad?”

Rei almost said yes.

Then remembered Moriyama.

Plain words are not every word.

“It is dangerous”

Daigo looked away first.

“Fine. That is worse”

Across the courtyard, Satoru said something to one of his attendants.

The attendant paled.

Satoru smiled.

Not happily.

Rei could not hear the words, but he saw the shape of them in the attendant’s shoulders.

A warning.

Or a joke that knew it could become one.

Akiha followed Rei’s gaze.

“He stayed”

“Yes”

“Why?”

Rei looked down at his bandaged palm.

“Because if he left, everyone would ask me what he saw”

Daigo muttered “That sounds like him being useful in the most annoying way possible”

Tomonari said quietly “It also makes him a participant”

Akiha looked back at Rei.

“Did he choose that?”

“Yes”

The answer changed something.

Not enough.

But something.

The storehouse door opened wider.

Moriyama stepped out first.

Her face told the courtyard nothing except that several people had disappointed her and at least one person would continue doing so.

Oda followed with the ledger closed under one arm.

Kitahara carried a sealed evidence container with the lacquered box inside. The container had been wrapped in three external suppression strips, two handwritten warning tags, and one bright red mark in Oda’s hand that said:

DO NOT OPEN BECAUSE YOU THINK THE FIRST PERSON WAS CARELESS

Daigo read it and whispered “I like her”

Oda’s eyes moved to him.

“I heard that”

Daigo straightened.

“I meant respectfully”

“That is worse”

Haruto came out next.

Sayuri followed him.

Rei did not like their faces.

Not because they looked frightened.

Because they did not.

They looked like adults who had decided which parts of fear could wait.

Haruto stopped in front of Rei.

“How is your hand?”

“Painful”

“Good”

Daigo pointed at Haruto.

“He said it too”

Haruto looked at him.

Daigo lowered his hand.

“Respectfully”

Sayuri’s mouth moved almost invisibly.

Akiha did not smile.

Moriyama addressed the group.

“The official record will state that a listed inactive teaching object produced an unexpected threshold response during analysis. Mikage identified the hazard before completion, intercepted the initial vector, and assisted in containment. The object has been removed from student handling and transferred to restricted review”

Daigo frowned.

“That sounds too clean”

Moriyama’s gaze shifted to him.

“Yes”

He blinked.

“Oh”

Oda said “There will be an addendum”

Kitahara lifted the container slightly.

“And a separate review of the listing chain”

Tomonari asked “Will Clerk Fujita be named?”

The adults looked at him.

Tomonari did not retreat.

Oda answered “In the restricted chain, yes. In the student-facing report, no”

Daigo looked angry.

“Why not?”

Moriyama said “Because if the student report names him before the restricted chain confirms handling, it becomes easier to dismiss the students as accusing an official while frightened”

Daigo’s jaw tightened.

“I hate that answer”

“So do I” Kitahara said

That surprised him.

It surprised Rei too.

Kitahara looked at the sealed container.

“Which is why the adult report will name him loudly enough”

Oda said “If it is softened, I will become inconvenient”

Moriyama said “More inconvenient”

Oda looked at her.

“I ration myself”

No one believed her.

Haruto looked at Rei.

“We are leaving”

Rei stood.

His knees almost betrayed him.

Akiha moved.

So did Daigo.

This narrative has been purloined without the author's approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.

So did Satoru from across the courtyard.

Haruto caught Rei first.

Not by grabbing.

By being there.

Rei steadied.

“I am fine”

Sayuri said “That sentence is not invited today”

Rei closed his mouth.

Satoru stopped several steps away.

He did not come closer.

Another restraint.

Another visible line.

Haruto noticed.

Sayuri noticed.

Akiha noticed.

Everyone noticed now.

That was the second consequence of the vow.

Even the restraint had become observable.

Satoru looked at Rei’s hand.

“You bleed normally”

Rei stared at him.

Daigo said “What kind of thing is that to say?”

Satoru shrugged.

“A reassuring one”

“It is not”

Rei said “It is, from him”

Daigo looked horrified.

“You understood that?”

“I wish I did not”

Satoru grinned.

The expression was almost familiar enough to hurt.

Then he looked at Haruto and Sayuri.

His grin faded by half.

“I did not tell them”

Haruto’s voice was even.

“I know”

Satoru’s eyes narrowed behind the glasses.

“Do you?”

“Yes”

A pause.

Then Satoru said “That is annoying”

Sayuri stepped forward just enough to make him look at her.

“Thank you for being annoyed quietly”

Satoru’s face performed a small war against itself.

“I hate your family”

Sayuri smiled.

“No you do not”

“I could”

“You could try”

Rei made a small sound that hurt his hand because everything apparently connected to everything else today.

Haruto looked at him.

“Do not laugh while injured”

“I apologize”

Satoru looked delighted.

“He apologized to laughter”

Sayuri said “He has apologized to tea”

Satoru turned to Rei.

“You did what?”

Daigo said “That part is true”

Rei looked at the sky.

“I am leaving now”

The departure took longer than it should have.

All departures after dangerous events did. Adults had to make sure each other had seen the right things, not seen the wrong things, signed the correct paper, avoided the incorrect responsibility, and failed to say anything useful in public. Children had to stand nearby pretending they were not listening to the shape of the cage being rebuilt around them.

Before Rei stepped into the car, Satoru called his name.

Not Mikage.

Not support kid.

“Rei”

Every adult within hearing distance heard the name.

That was probably the point.

Rei turned.

Satoru stood under the eaves, white hair too bright against old wood, hands in his sleeves, glasses hiding the eyes that had changed too much.

He said “Your bandage is ugly”

Rei looked at the thick cloth around his palm.

“Your stamp is uglier”

Satoru smiled.

“Good”

No one else understood.

Not fully.

That was fine.

Some things could remain small even after becoming dangerous.

For now.

The car ride home was quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

Haruto sat across from Rei. Sayuri sat beside him. The privacy charm activated as soon as the doors closed, then a second charm layered beneath it in a pattern Rei recognized from the night he had first said the word System aloud to his parents.

A serious room.

Made of moving wood and wheels.

Haruto looked at the bandage.

“Show me”

Rei unwrapped it.

The wound was not deep. A red line across the palm, slightly curved where the threshold had touched and recoiled. It looked ordinary if one ignored the faint cold at the edges, the way the skin around it resisted ordinary cursed energy inspection, and the sense that the cut remembered being a door.

Haruto’s expression did not change.

Sayuri’s did.

Only a little.

She took Rei’s hand carefully.

“The edge is folded”

“Yes”

“Into you?”

“No. Against me”

Haruto leaned closer.

“You are certain?”

Rei closed his eyes and checked.

Slowly.

No flare.

No forced stillness.

The wound sat in his palm like a rejected invitation. There was residue from the threshold, but no active anchor, no line leading outward, no command waiting for agreement.

“Yes”

Sayuri released a breath.

Haruto began treating the wound properly.

His cursed energy touched the skin.

Stopped.

Rei felt his body reject the direct intervention before Haruto did.

A familiar problem.

Not the same as Kalon from another story, no. Here, Haruto was not a healer forcing mana into a body that refused the world. But Rei’s layered templates, System masking, and the strange edge of the threshold made direct outside cursed energy slide off the wrong way.

Haruto withdrew immediately.

“Your body does not like the contact”

“No”

“System?”

Rei opened it.

The text appeared faster than he wanted.

[Injury assessment]

Type:

threshold contact wound

external cursed boundary residue present

no active anchor detected

no parasitic route detected

Direct external cursed energy intervention:

not recommended

Recommended care:

physical cleaning

low-output self-circulation

controlled rest

avoid direct Six Eyes scrutiny during recovery

Rei read it aloud.

Haruto’s mouth tightened at the last line.

Sayuri looked toward the road ahead as if she could see Satoru through distance.

“A little late”

Rei closed the interface.

Haruto cleaned the wound with mundane water, cloth, and bitter medicine.

It hurt more than cursed energy would have.

That was probably why it worked.

Sayuri held Rei’s wrist while Haruto wrapped the palm again.

Not because Rei needed help staying still.

Because she wanted to hold his wrist.

He let her.

When the bandage was secure, Haruto sat back.

“Tell us exactly what happened when the mask opened”

Rei knew this was coming.

That did not make it easier.

He spoke.

Not quickly.

Not elegantly.

He told them about the box, the hinge, the threshold, the attention moving toward Akiha, the decision to step in, the way Tengen’s foundation opened too widely, the red line touching his palm, the Yuta-depth moving beneath him, the reserve not flaring but becoming visible as depth, the floor talismans snapping from contradiction rather than output, the recoil, the forced ugliness of the containment ring, Satoru’s inhale.

Haruto did not interrupt.

Sayuri did not either.

At the end, Rei felt tired enough to dissolve.

Haruto said “He saw the reserve”

“Some of it”

“The barrier structure”

“Some”

“The cost suppression”

“Yes”

“The multiplicity”

Rei flinched.

Haruto’s eyes sharpened.

“Yes” Rei said

Sayuri’s hand tightened around his wrist.

Haruto looked away for one second.

That was worse than fear.

When he looked back, his voice was quiet.

“Did he see the System?”

“No”

“The names?”

“No”

“The future sources?”

“No”

“Your knowledge?”

“No”

Sayuri asked “Your self?”

Rei did not know how to answer.

That was answer enough.

The car wheels moved over uneven stone.

Sayuri’s voice was soft.

“He said you are hiding a whole person”

Rei looked at her.

Haruto looked too.

She had not been close enough to hear that.

Rei realized.

“You heard?”

“No”

“Then how?”

She touched his wrist once.

“A mother does not need Six Eyes to know which sentence wounded her child”

Rei looked down.

Haruto closed his eyes.

Just for a moment.

Then said “A vow is structure. Not trust”

“I know”

“You are relieved”

Rei swallowed.

“Yes”

“That is not wrong”

He looked up.

Haruto continued “It is only incomplete”

Sayuri’s voice followed.

“He chose not to turn what he saw into property”

The words entered the car and stayed there.

Rei breathed.

In.

Hold.

Out.

“Yes”

Haruto nodded slowly.

“That matters”

Rei stared at him.

Haruto’s expression remained severe.

“It does not make him safe. It does not make him yours. It does not make what happened acceptable. But it matters”

Sayuri smiled faintly.

“Your father is being very balanced”

Haruto looked at her.

“This is not the time”

“It is exactly the time. Balance is rare and should be recorded”

Rei almost laughed.

Almost.

Pain stopped him.

Haruto inspected the bandage one more time.

“For now, no training involving external cursed energy. No low-output demonstrations. No letters until tomorrow”

Rei opened his mouth.

Haruto looked at him.

Rei closed it.

Sayuri said “Good survival instinct”

“I am injured, not foolish”

Haruto raised an eyebrow.

Sayuri said “Let him have that one”

The house received him badly.

Not because anyone panicked.

Because everyone refused to.

The servants moved quietly, too carefully, making the air around Rei soft in a way that made him want to apologize for bleeding. Sayuri sent them away before he could. Haruto took him to the family room instead of his bedroom, which meant rest but not isolation. A thin privacy barrier settled over the room. Dinner arrived early and was too simple to be ceremonial.

Rice.

Soup.

Pickles.

No tea sacrifice.

Rei noticed.

Sayuri noticed him notice.

“The tea has suffered enough this week”

He looked at her.

“You are making jokes because you are angry”

“Yes”

Haruto set down his bowl.

“At whom?”

Sayuri’s smile did not reach her eyes.

“How much time do we have?”

Rei ate because not eating would become another problem.

His hand hurt. His body felt hollow in the places where the System had held too tightly. The Masking Protocol was stable, but stable like a bridge after a flood: still standing, not yet trustworthy.

After dinner, the first visitor arrived.

Moriyama.

She did not bring sweets, flowers, apology, or comfort.

She brought a copy of the student-facing report.

Rei appreciated this more than flowers.

Probably.

Haruto read it first.

Sayuri second.

Rei third.

The report was clean.

Too clean.

But not false.

It stated that an unexpected threshold reaction occurred. It stated that Rei identified the danger and intercepted the initial vector. It stated that the object had been mislabeled inactive. It did not mention depth, reserve, multiplicity, Satoru’s observation, or the vow. It included a note that all student witnesses should be considered under event stress and not questioned outside approved debrief channels.

Rei looked up.

“Approved by whom?”

Moriyama sat without being invited.

“Me”

Haruto said “And?”

“Oda. Kitahara. Your parents. One Tokyo instructor who signed because Oda stared at him”

Sayuri looked pleased.

“Effective”

Moriyama ignored that.

“There is also a restricted addendum”

Rei waited.

Moriyama looked at him.

“You do not get that one”

“I was there”

“You are eight”

“So was Gojo”

“He also does not get it”

Rei stared.

Moriyama stared back.

He looked away first.

Annoying.

Correct.

Moriyama set the report down.

“Fujita’s listing is being reviewed”

Haruto asked “By whom?”

“Oda has already sent copies to three places where records go to become impossible to erase”

Sayuri’s expression sharpened with approval.

Moriyama continued “Kitahara filed a personal objection to the inactive classification. I filed an instructor hazard escalation. Your family will file a witness concern without naming what cannot be named”

Haruto nodded.

“We will”

Rei looked at the report.

“Will Fujita know I noticed?”

Moriyama’s mouth tightened.

“Likely”

Sayuri said “He may already have known you would”

The room cooled.

Haruto looked at her.

Sayuri did not take it back.

Rei’s injured palm throbbed.

The box had been listed inactive by Fujita.

The threshold reached for someone who recognized doors.

Rei had been in the room.

Akiha had been in the room.

Satoru had been in the room.

Too many coincidences could become a route if one turned them sideways.

Moriyama saw his face.

“Do not build the whole enemy from one box”

Rei looked at her.

“Do not ignore the box because the whole enemy is inconvenient”

Her scar twitched.

“Acceptable”

Haruto did not look pleased.

Sayuri looked like she would have said the same thing with sharper manners.

Moriyama leaned back.

“Gojo’s official statement is short”

Rei went still.

Haruto asked “What does it say?”

Moriyama recited from memory.

“Satoru Gojo observed an unexpected threshold reaction from a mislabeled instructional object. Rei Mikage identified the hazard and responded before completion of the threshold. The object was contained. Further detail should be taken from Kyoto instructional and archive staff”

Rei stared.

That was a wall.

Again.

A formal wall this time.

Moriyama looked at him.

“He gave them almost nothing”

Sayuri said “Because of the vow?”

Moriyama’s gaze sharpened.

Rei went still.

Haruto said nothing.

Sayuri held Moriyama’s gaze.

The silence stretched.

Moriyama exhaled.

“I do not need terms”

Haruto’s voice was quiet.

“No”

“I need to know whether the child bound himself in a way that will complicate my reporting”

Rei answered before Haruto could.

“Yes”

Moriyama looked at him.

“It will?”

“Yes”

“Did you help word it?”

“Yes”

Her eyes closed.

“Mikage”

“It was necessary”

“That is what people say before becoming case studies”

Sayuri said “It was carefully worded”

Moriyama opened her eyes.

“That is what clever people say before becoming worse case studies”

Haruto said “It was narrow”

Moriyama looked at him.

“A narrow blade can still cut deeply”

No one argued.

Then Moriyama leaned forward.

“Listen to me. All of you. A vow protects one boundary by creating another. That does not make the protected thing safe. It makes violating it expensive. Those are different”

Rei nodded.

“I know”

Moriyama pointed at him.

“You especially do not get to say that for at least three days”

He closed his mouth.

Sayuri’s mouth twitched.

Haruto looked almost satisfied.

Moriyama stood.

“One more thing”

Rei looked up.

She held his gaze.

“Do not be grateful enough to become stupid”

Then she left.

Daigo arrived thirty minutes later.

He brought no report.

He brought a bag of rice crackers, probably stolen from his own residence or acquired through methods best left undocumented.

Akiha and Tomonari came with him.

That alone told Rei something had happened before they arrived.

Daigo would not have willingly coordinated with them unless worried, cornered, or bribed.

Akiha looked composed.

Tomonari looked polite.

Daigo looked angry at the crackers.

Sayuri let them in.

Haruto stayed.

This was either permission or surveillance.

Both, probably.

Rei sat with his bandaged hand resting on a cushion.

Daigo placed the crackers on the table.

“These are not for you”

Rei looked at them.

“They are on my table”

“They are for everyone. You can have some because you are here”

Akiha said “He was worried”

Daigo turned on her.

“I was not”

Tomonari said “You threatened three people when they asked whether Rei’s hand was cursed”

Daigo’s face reddened.

“That was educational”

Rei said “Thank you”

Daigo pointed at him.

“No”

“For the educational threats”

“I said no”

Sayuri opened the bag.

“Very thoughtful of you, Daigo”

Daigo looked betrayed by the entire adult world.

Haruto poured water.

Akiha sat across from Rei.

Tomonari sat beside her.

Daigo remained standing for three seconds too long, then dropped down beside Tomonari like the floor had lost an argument.

No one spoke at first.

That was unusual enough to be its own injury.

Finally Daigo said “So. Are you going to die later from box nonsense?”

“No”

“Are you sure?”

“Reasonably”

“That is not enough”

“It is what I have”

Daigo accepted this badly.

Akiha looked at Rei’s bandage.

“Does it still feel like a door?”

Rei looked at her.

Daigo said “What does that mean?”

Tomonari’s gaze sharpened.

Rei answered because Akiha had earned the question.

“No. It feels like something that wanted to be one”

She nodded.

Her fingers folded tighter.

Then she asked the question everyone had been standing around.

“What did Gojo see?”

Haruto’s cup stopped halfway to the table.

Sayuri did not move.

Daigo looked between them.

Tomonari’s eyes dropped.

Rei felt the vow in the room even though it did not bind him.

Or maybe he felt the consequences of what the vow had made visible.

He could tell them.

He could choose not to.

Both choices would cost something.

Akiha’s voice stayed controlled.

“I know you may not want to answer. I am asking anyway”

Rei looked at her.

“Yes”

Daigo’s expression changed.

Akiha did not blink.

Tomonari remained very still.

Rei continued “He saw enough to know that my public limit is false”

Daigo’s jaw tightened.

Tomonari’s face became carefully blank.

Akiha asked “How false?”

Rei swallowed.

“Very”

Daigo looked down.

“Damn it”

Akiha’s voice sharpened.

“That is still not an answer”

“I know”

“Can you give one?”

Rei looked at Haruto.

His father’s expression was unreadable.

Sayuri’s was not.

She was watching him, not protecting him from the choice.

That mattered.

Rei looked back at Akiha.

“No”

The word was small.

It did enough damage.

Akiha’s face did not break.

That was worse.

“No because you cannot, or no because you choose not to?”

Rei forced himself to answer.

“Because I choose not to”

Daigo stood.

Then sat back down immediately, as if he did not trust what standing would do.

Tomonari closed his eyes for a second.

Akiha nodded once.

Too calm.

“I see”

Rei said “Akiha”

She looked at him.

“Do not make it softer”

The words stopped him.

She continued “Not yet”

Daigo muttered “This sucks”

Tomonari said quietly “Yes”

Akiha’s eyes stayed on Rei.

“He saw something I am not allowed to know”

“Yes”

“And I am still supposed to help hide it?”

There.

The sentence.

The one the whole room had been trying not to arrange itself around.

Rei had no good answer.

Only true ones.

“I do not know what I am allowed to ask of you now”

Akiha’s expression shifted.

Not soft.

Not forgiving.

But real.

“That is the first honest thing you have said in this conversation”

Rei lowered his head.

Daigo looked uncomfortable.

Tomonari spoke carefully.

“We were already helping hide something undefined”

Akiha did not look away from Rei.

“That was my mistake too”

Tomonari’s mouth closed.

Daigo stared at her.

Akiha continued “I accepted not knowing because I thought the boundary was around danger. Now Gojo has seen inside a boundary I cannot even name”

Rei’s throat tightened.

“I did not plan for that”

“I know”

No mercy in it.

Only truth.

Daigo rubbed the back of his neck.

“What do we do then?”

That was the surprising part.

Not what does Rei do?

What do we do?

Akiha heard it too.

So did Tomonari.

Rei looked at Daigo.

Daigo glared.

“What? I am already involved. I hate it, but pretending I can walk away now is stupid”

Tomonari said “We can renegotiate involvement”

Daigo looked at him.

“That sounds like a contract disease”

“It may still be necessary”

Akiha looked at Rei.

“Not tonight”

He nodded.

“Not tonight”

“Tomorrow, or the day after, you will tell us what our involvement means now. Not the hidden thing. The involvement”

“Yes”

“Not alone”

“No”

Daigo pointed at him.

“And no making it sound noble”

Rei blinked.

Daigo continued “When you make things sound noble, adults start appearing in the sentence”

Sayuri covered her mouth.

Haruto looked down at his cup.

Tomonari said “That was also useful”

Daigo slumped.

“I hate crisis. It makes everyone appreciate me”

For the first time since the box knocked, Akiha laughed.

Only once.

Small.

But real.

The room breathed.

Not healed.

Not fixed.

Breathing.

After the cohort left, Rei sat in the family room until the lamps burned low.

His hand hurt.

His head hurt more.

Haruto sat across from him, reading the student report again as if repetition could reveal hidden teeth. Sayuri repaired one of Rei’s sleeves, though he was fairly certain it had not been damaged. Sometimes her hands needed something smaller than fear.

The System had not opened again.

Rei did not know whether that was kindness or exhaustion.

He broke the silence.

“I hurt her”

Sayuri did not ask who.

“Yes”

Haruto lowered the report.

“You chose not to tell her”

“Yes”

“Was that wrong?”

Rei expected the answer to be yes.

It would have been easier if it were.

“I do not know”

Haruto nodded.

“Good”

Rei looked at him.

Haruto continued “Some secrets are not owed. Some involvement is. The problem is separating them before someone else pays the cost”

Rei looked at his bandage.

“I do not know how”

“No”

Sayuri’s needle paused.

“That is why this hurts”

Rei breathed carefully.

“I want to keep them safe”

Haruto’s voice was gentle enough to be devastating.

“Then do not confuse safety with them never touching the truth”

Rei closed his eyes.

There it was.

The lesson again.

Different face.

Same blade.

Sayuri set the sleeve down.

“When Satoru saw beneath the mask, he chose not to make what he saw into property”

Rei opened his eyes.

She looked at him.

“You must decide whether you are doing the same for them”

He flinched.

Not visibly enough.

They saw anyway.

No one spoke after that for a long time.

Later, when the house slept badly around him, Rei went to his room.

The floorboard came up with the quiet familiarity of repeated secrecy.

The ugly stamp sat wrapped in cloth.

The bookmark rested inside the barrier notation manual.

His notebook waited.

He opened it with his uninjured hand.

Writing was awkward.

That was fitting.

He wrote slowly.

Fourth physical contact aftermath.

Satoru saw beneath the mask.

Not all.

Enough.

He made a Binding Vow:

Until Rei Mikage chooses to reveal his true nature by his own will, Satoru Gojo will not reveal what he saw beneath Rei Mikage’s mask today. Not directly. Not indirectly. Not through reports. Not through adults. Not through jokes.

The vow protects disclosure.

It does not protect relationships from consequence.

He stopped because his hand was shaking.

Not the injured one.

The other.

He breathed.

Then continued.

Akiha asked:

He saw something I am not allowed to know.

And I am still supposed to help hide it?

No answer good enough.

Necessary conversation pending.

He considered the stamp.

No.

Not this page.

The words were not ready.

A sound touched the window.

Not a knock.

A tap.

Rei went still.

The estate barriers did not react as they would to an intruder.

They flexed.

Recognizing permission they did not like.

Rei stood carefully and opened the inner screen.

A folded paper sat on the outer sill, pinned beneath a small white stone.

No courier.

No seal.

No adult route.

The residue was unmistakable.

Satoru.

Rei stared at it for several seconds.

Then picked it up.

His injured hand throbbed as if objecting to narrative timing.

The note was short.

Rei,

I am not going to ask tonight.

That is restraint.

You should appreciate it.

Satoru

P.S. Your mother is right. Thanking me like an adult is awful.

P.P.S. Your father is also right. A vow is structure.

P.P.P.S. Structure is annoying.

Rei read it twice.

Then sat on the floor because standing required more dignity than he had.

He almost laughed.

Almost cried.

Did neither.

Instead, he turned the paper over.

There was one more line on the back.

I still saw you.

The room became very quiet.

Not threatening.

Not safe.

Quiet.

Rei folded the note carefully and placed it inside the manual beside the bookmark.

Not under the floorboard.

Not yet.

The vow held.

The secret held.

The relationships around it did not return to what they had been.

That was the cost.

Rei opened the notebook again and added one final line.

Being seen does not end hiding.

It changes who the hiding hurts.

This time, he pressed the ugly stamp beneath the line.

Plain.

The mark came out crooked.

Darker on the left.

Faint at the lower edge.

Honest about pressure.
