Tara was stunned when she saw the familiar face standing at the door.
She looked at the woman in confusion while the latter raised an eyebrow with equal parts interest and surprise.
“You?” the woman said.
“Yes… me,” Tara replied, still confused.
“What are you doing here?” the woman asked, a sharp edge evident in her tone.
“Shouldn’t I be the one asking that?” Tara replied nonchalantly.
“I’m here to see Cain.
Where is he?” the woman asked confidently.
“And who might you be to him?”
“Oh, me?
I’m Anika, the neighbor next door.
And I’m guessing you must be his maid,” she said before casually pushing her way into the house.
Tara was stunned by her attitude.
She was already irritated enough, but the moment she recognized Anika as the same woman she had seen with Cain outside the gate the previous night, her expression darkened slightly.
“Were you with Cain outside the gate last night?” Tara asked calmly.
“Wow, it seems even maids know what their masters are up to,” Anika replied confidently, amusement clear in her tone.
Tara was genuinely shocked by the girl’s confidence, so she decided to humor her a little.
She walked toward the couch opposite Anika and sat down gracefully before looking directly at her.
“Miss Anika, sorry to disappoint you, but I’m only an ordinary friend of Mr.
Woods, so refrain from calling me a maid.”
The last part carried an unmistakable coldness.
Just as she finished speaking, Cain descended the staircase.
From Tara’s position, her back was facing the stairs, so the first thing Cain saw when he came down was Anika sitting comfortably in his living room.
“You?” Cain said while staring at Anika.
“Yes, me, Cain,” Anika replied happily.
“What are you doing here?” Cain asked calmly.
“I came to visit you since you left so abruptly yesterday,” Anika answered sweetly.
Tara could not bear listening to the interaction any longer.
“Miss Harriet, please bring my breakfast to the bedroom,” she called out loudly before standing up and heading toward the stairs.
However, before she could walk past Cain, he reached out and held her wrist gently, stopping her in place.
“We need to talk,” he said softly.
The moment Tara heard those words, it felt as though all her energy had drained away.
She looked at Cain silently before using her other hand to gently remove his grip from her wrist.
Luckily, Cain let go the moment he realized what she intended to do.
Once she was free, Tara quietly walked upstairs.
“Cain…” Anika called out.
Only then did Cain remember that she was still there.
“What are you doing here?
And who let you into my house, let alone through the gate?” he asked coldly this time.
“I just wanted to see you,” Anika replied quietly.
Cain looked at her calmly, but his eyes reflected pure coldness.
“Get out of my house.”
“What?” Anika said in disbelief.
“I will not repeat myself.”
At that moment, Harriet was heading upstairs with Tara’s breakfast tray.
When she passed by Cain, he stopped her.
I’ll take it to Tara.
You see the guest out,” he said coldly while side-eyeing Anika.
Without waiting for a response, he took the tray and headed upstairs.
He gently knocked on Tara’s bedroom door.
“Come in,” Tara’s voice answered from inside.
When Cain entered, he found Tara sitting on the fluffy round couch near the large window overlooking the other side of the villa, where a beautiful lake and park could be seen in the distance.
Her back was facing the door.
“Just leave the breakfast on the table and you can go,” she said quietly.
Cain did as she said, but instead of leaving, he walked over and sat beside her.
Tara glanced at him briefly before returning her gaze to the view outside.
“What are you doing here?” she asked calmly.
“Aren’t you supposed to be entertaining your guest?”
Cain sighed softly before looking at her seriously.
“Talk to me, Tara.
What’s wrong?
I’m here to listen.”
Tara suddenly asked a question that completely stunned him.
“Are you cheating on me?”
Even as she asked, her eyes never left the window.
Cain froze, unsure of what to say.
After waiting several seconds without getting an answer, Tara finally turned to look at him.
Tears had already begun gathering in her eyes, though she stubbornly held them back.
“So it’s true…” she whispered, her voice trembling.
The moment Cain saw her expression, it felt as though something stabbed directly into his heart.
He panicked.
Without knowing what else to do, he immediately pulled her into his arms and embraced her gently.
At that moment, all he knew was that seeing her like this made his chest ache unbearably, and he wanted to stop that feeling no matter what.
“Hey…” he murmured softly while gently stroking her hair.
“I would never cheat on you.
This is all just a misunderstanding.”
“Then explain to me how it’s a misunderstanding,” Tara said, her voice cracking with every word.
“Cain, we met her at the airport, and ever since then I’ve been trying to avoid you two being together because she bothered me at the airport.
Then suddenly I see her today and she just happens to be our neighbor next door.
Later I realize she’s the same person I saw with you yesterday, and now she comes over saying she came to see you because you left abruptly yesterday.
How am I supposed to see that as a misunderstanding?
And even so… Cain… of all people, why her?
With all these coincidences…”
Every word Tara spoke seemed to break something inside Cain.
“It really is just a coincidence, Tara,” Cain said earnestly.
“I don’t know her.
I can explain everything to you, and I swear with everything in me that I have nothing to do with her.
Please believe me.”
He gently pulled away from the hug so he could look directly into her eyes.
“I only care about you.
I don’t know her, and she means nothing to me.
All those incidents were simply coincidences.
I swear.”
Tara looked at him carefully.
“Really?”
“Yes,” Cain answered immediately.
“You’re not lying?”
“I would never lie to you.
Now, could you please eat first?
Then I’ll explain everything.”
Tara could only nod quietly.
Cain stood up, brought the breakfast tray over, and placed it between them so she could eat.
“Let’s eat together,” Tara suddenly said.
“But there’s only a small amount of breakfast, and we only have one glass of juice,” Cain replied.
“We can share.”
Before Cain could argue further, Tara interrupted him.
“No buts.
Just eat.”
She cut a piece of pancake and fed it to him directly.
As they shared breakfast together, the atmosphere slowly became peaceful and comforting once again.
After Tara finished eating, Cain placed the tray aside before returning to sit beside her.
Then he carefully explained everything—from how he first met Anika in the neighborhood, to her interaction with Jade, the pastry shop encounter, what happened outside the gate, and finally how he unexpectedly found her sitting in the living room earlier that morning.
However, he deliberately left out the conversation he had with Kalon, not wanting to create another misunderstanding between them.
“That’s all?” Tara asked, sounding embarrassed.
“Yes… that’s all,” Cain replied, confused by her reaction.
Tara suddenly wrapped her arms around him tightly.
“Sorry, babe,” she whispered softly.
“I thought maybe you cheated on me again… or maybe you got tired of me because I lost my memory.
So I just wanted to give you space… or step back for the girl in your life.”
The last part came out in an almost inaudible voice.
Cain gently patted her back.
“You’re the only girl in my life, so please don’t think there’s anyone else.
No one will ever replace you.”
Tara giggled softly.
“Now I know, babe.”
Then suddenly she said:
“I love you, Cain.”
Cain stiffened instantly.
He could not bring himself to respond.
Because deep down, he knew everything between them was built on a lie.
Tara only believed what she thought was true, meaning the love she claimed to feel might not even be real—it was born from the fake relationship story they had created for her after she lost her memories.
So in the end, all Cain could do was hum quietly in response to her confession.
