Echoes of Ash

Keeper of faces

The chamber exploded into motion.

The twelve guardians stepped down from their ancient pedestals as one, their stone bodies shedding centuries of dust. Golden light blazed from their eyes, illuminating the chamber with a warmth that pushed back the crimson glow spilling from the fractured Gate.

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

Not Veyra.

Not her soldiers.

Not even the Black Blades.

The nearest guardian lowered its head before Uriel.

Its voice rolled through the chamber like distant thunder.

"The Keeper has returned."

The remaining guardians echoed the declaration.

"The Keeper has returned."

Voren's expression darkened.

"So... the old stories were true."

He tightened his grip on the greatsword.

"I hoped they had died with the Keepers."

Captain Darius planted his shield firmly.

"They're on our side now."

Voren laughed.

"For now."

The laughter had barely faded before the first guardian attacked.

It crossed the chamber with startling speed, its stone fist crashing into a Black Blade. Armor shattered like brittle glass, and the assassin was thrown against a pillar with such force that the stone cracked.

The chamber erupted into battle once more.

The remaining guardians joined the fight, moving with disciplined precision. They carried no weapons, yet each strike was devastating. One seized an assassin by the arm and hurled him into two others. Another caught a descending blade with its bare hand before crushing the steel between its fingers.

"They're buying us time!" Lyra shouted from atop the fallen pillar.

An arrow left her bow, piercing an assassin through the throat before he could reach Garron.

"Don't waste it!"

Veyra immediately understood.

"Darius!"

The captain turned.

"Take Ellis and Garron. Secure the eastern passage."

"You think there's another way out?"

"There has to be."

He nodded sharply.

"You heard the Commander!"

The three veterans broke away, forcing back the Black Blades as they pushed toward a narrow corridor hidden behind one of the statues.

Meanwhile, Merek and Tovin fought shoulder to shoulder, protecting Lyra as she continued to rain arrows across the battlefield. Years of campaigning together showed in every movement. They needed no shouted commands.

Only trust.

Voren ignored them all.

His eyes never left Uriel.

"You don't even know what you're protecting."

Uriel raised his blade.

"Then tell me."

Voren smiled sadly.

"If I did..."

"Kaelen would kill me himself."

Their swords collided.

The impact sent sparks dancing across the chamber.

Voren attacked relentlessly, each swing carrying enough force to fracture the marble beneath their feet. Uriel met every strike, retreating only when necessary.

The mask stirred.

Not with anger.

With memory.

Its warmth spread across his face.

Then the whisper came.

"Left."

Instinctively, Uriel shifted.

Voren's blade swept harmlessly past his shoulder, missing by inches.

His eyes widened.

"It guides you."

Uriel answered with a quick thrust that scraped across Voren's breastplate.

The giant stepped back.

For the first time...

He looked impressed.

Behind them, a deafening crack echoed through the chamber.

One of the ancient guardians staggered.

A jagged fissure split across its chest.

Black energy seeped from the wound like smoke.

The guardian looked toward the Gate.

"The seal weakens..."

Another guardian turned.

"Protect the Keeper."

Without hesitation, six guardians abandoned the battle and formed a circle around Uriel.

The remaining six continued fighting the Black Blades.

The sphere of darkness hovered silently above the fractured seal.

Then it spoke.

"The oath remains."

"The blood remembers."

The crimson light pulsing from beneath the Gate suddenly intensified.

The floor shook violently.

Stone rained from the ceiling.

Captain Darius' voice echoed from the eastern corridor.

"Commander!"

"We found something!"

Veyra glanced toward the passage.

"What is it?"

"A stairwell!"

"It goes deeper!"

The sphere drifted toward the hidden corridor.

"The Vault awaits."

Voren's expression changed instantly.

"No!"

For the first time since entering the chamber...

He sounded afraid.

"You cannot let him reach the Vault!"

He surged forward with terrifying speed, forcing two guardians aside with sheer strength. His sword crashed against another guardian's shoulder, shattering its stone arm.

The guardian did not cry out.

It simply stepped aside.

"Proceed, Keeper."

Veyra didn't hesitate.

"Everyone fall back!"

"We're moving!"

The order rippled through her soldiers.

Ellis disengaged first, covering Lyra as she climbed down from the broken pillar.

Merek dragged a wounded Garron toward the newly discovered passage while Tovin thrust his spear backward to keep the assassins at bay.

Captain Darius became the last line of defense.

His shield blocked the narrow entrance.

"Move!"

"I'll hold them!"

"You'll hold them together," Veyra replied.

She stepped beside him.

"There are no heroes today."

Darius smiled despite the blood running down his face.

"As you command."

Together they retreated, never turning their backs on the enemy.

One by one, the guardians withdrew as well, their enormous forms sealing the corridor behind the group.

The final guardian paused before entering.

It looked directly at Uriel.

Its golden eyes seemed almost... human.

"Remember the oath."

Then it struck the ceiling with both fists.

The chamber collapsed.

Stone thundered downward, separating Voren and the remaining Black Blades from the hidden stairwell.

Dust consumed everything.

For several moments, only darkness remained.

The group descended in silence.

The staircase spiraled deep beneath the Citadel, carved from smooth white stone untouched by fire or time. Strange symbols glowed faintly along the walls, illuminating their path with pale silver light.

No one spoke.

The battle above faded with every step.

After what felt like several minutes, Lyra finally broke the silence.

"I've never seen architecture like this."

Maera would have recognized it immediately.

But she wasn't here.

Not yet.

Captain Darius ran a gloved hand across the wall.

"No tool marks."

"No cracks."

"It's as if the stairs were... grown."

Uriel's fingers brushed the ancient stone.

The mask pulsed.

Another memory surfaced.

A child's laughter.

Footsteps racing down these very stairs.

A familiar voice calling after him.

Then darkness.

The memory vanished before he could grasp it.

Veyra noticed his expression.

"Another vision?"

He nodded slowly.

"I think I've walked these stairs before."

"But I don't remember when."

The staircase ended before a pair of towering white doors.

Unlike every structure above, these doors had not aged.

They stood flawless.

At their center was the emblem of a dragon with four wings wrapped around a blank porcelain mask.

Captain Darius stepped forward.

"No handles."

"No hinges."

"How do we open them?"

Before anyone could investigate further, the Keeper's Mask burned with sudden intensity.

Golden cracks spread across its surface.

The symbol on the doors answered.

A beam of golden light emerged from the dragon's eye, striking the mask.

The entire chamber trembled.

Ancient mechanisms awakened.

The great doors began to open on their own.

A rush of cold air poured from the darkness beyond.

Then a voice—older than kingdoms, softer than a whisper—filled the hall.

"Welcome home... Keeper."

The doors opened fully.

Beyond them stretched an endless library of towering shelves, ancient relics, and forgotten histories bathed in silver light.

And standing alone in its center, clutching an old manuscript to her chest, was a young woman whose eyes widened in disbelief as she saw Uriel.

The book slipped from her hands.

"You..."

Her voice trembled.

"...you're alive."
