Forgotten Vault

Keeper of faces

The ancient doors groaned shut behind them.

Their echo rolled through the endless hall before fading into silence.

For several moments, no one moved.

The vast chamber stretched farther than the eye could follow. Towering shelves carved from white stone disappeared into the darkness above, each lined with weathered scrolls, crystal tablets, and leather-bound tomes that had survived centuries untouched. Between them stood marble pedestals displaying relics whose names had long been forgotten.

Nothing smelled of dust.

Instead, the air carried the scent of rain and old parchment.

Soft silver lights floated lazily through the chamber like drifting stars, illuminating the enormous dragon emblem engraved across the floor.

The Four-Winged Dragon.

Its wings wrapped around a porcelain mask identical to the one fused to Uriel's face.

The young woman standing at the center of the chamber stared in stunned silence.

She looked no older than twenty-five. Her dark auburn hair was tied loosely behind her shoulders, and soot stained the sleeves of her scholar's robes. Around her waist hung scroll cases, notebooks, and strange bronze instruments unlike anything the soldiers had seen.

The manuscript she had dropped remained open on the floor.

She took one cautious step forward.

"I... I thought no one could enter this place."

Captain Darius immediately raised his shield.

"Identify yourself."

The woman looked toward him before lowering her head respectfully.

"My name is Maera."

"I was once a Flamekeeper assigned to the Royal Archives."

Her eyes returned to Uriel.

"But that was before the city fell."

Veyra studied her carefully.

"I've heard your name."

Maera looked surprised.

"You have?"

"The Council's historian."

"The one who disappeared three years ago."

Maera gave a weary smile.

"I didn't disappear."

"I found what I was looking for."

She glanced around the endless library.

"And I never found a way back."

Ellis whispered under his breath.

"Gods..."

"She's been trapped down here all this time?"

Maera overheard him.

"There are worse places to be trapped."

Her smile faded.

"Especially when the world above is burning."

Uriel stepped toward the dragon emblem.

"You knew this place existed."

"I knew stories."

Maera answered honestly.

"But I never believed them until I found the entrance."

She knelt and picked up the manuscript she had dropped.

Its cover bore the same dragon symbol engraved on the floor.

"The Forgotten Vault."

"The sanctuary of the Keepers."

Captain Darius frowned.

"The Keepers again."

"Everyone speaks about them."

"No one explains who they were."

Maera looked at Uriel's mask.

"I think..."

"...he's the answer."

Silence settled over the group.

The floating lights drifted gently between the shelves.

Somehow...

The Vault felt alive.

Lyra wandered toward a nearby pedestal.

Upon it rested an ornate helmet crafted from silver and black crystal.

She reached toward it.

"Don't."

Maera's warning came sharply.

Lyra immediately withdrew her hand.

"These relics are bound by ancient seals."

"Touch the wrong one..."

"...and the Vault will defend itself."

Captain Darius folded his arms.

"Convenient place."

"It wasn't built for convenience."

Maera walked slowly across the chamber.

"It was built to preserve history."

She stopped before a towering mural carved into the far wall.

It depicted twelve masked warriors standing beneath a colossal dragon with four wings spread across the heavens.

At their feet knelt thousands.

Kings.

Queens.

Soldiers.

Common people.

All facing the masked figures.

"The Twelve Keepers."

Maera spoke softly.

"The first guardians."

"No kingdom ruled them."

"No crown commanded them."

"They served only the Oath."

Uriel stared at the mural.

Something about it felt familiar.

Painfully familiar.

He stepped closer.

One of the carved Keepers stood at the center of the twelve.

Its mask...

Was cracked.

Just like his.

His fingers rose almost instinctively.

They touched the stone.

The moment skin met marble...

Everything disappeared.

Darkness.

Then—

Light.

A younger Uriel stood inside a courtyard filled with flowering ash trees.

Children laughed as wooden swords clashed beneath the morning sun.

One boy charged forward recklessly.

Another sidestepped and swept his legs from beneath him.

"You lose again."

The familiar voice laughed.

Kaelen.

Young.

Smiling.

Without hatred.

Without darkness.

Another figure stepped between them.

A girl carrying two practice swords.

Veyra.

"You two spend more time competing than training."

Young Kaelen grinned.

"Same thing."

Young Uriel laughed.

"Only because I keep winning."

The three friends burst into laughter together.

The memory shifted.

The courtyard vanished.

A distant bell rang across the city.

An elderly man dressed in white robes approached.

His face remained hidden.

Only his voice remained clear.

"Uriel."

"It is time."

The vision shattered.

Uriel staggered backward.

Veyra caught his arm before he could fall.

"What happened?"

His breathing had become uneven.

"I saw..."

He struggled to find the words.

"Us."

"You..."

"Kaelen..."

"As children."

Veyra's expression softened.

"You remembered?"

"Only pieces."

Maera's eyes widened.

"The Vault is responding."

She hurried toward an ancient stone table covered in faded writings.

"I knew it."

"The Mask isn't simply granting power."

"It's restoring memory."

Captain Darius glanced uneasily toward the entrance.

"Can it do that safely?"

Maera hesitated.

"I don't know."

The answer did little to reassure anyone.

Before another question could be asked, the entire Vault trembled.

Books fell from nearby shelves.

The floating lights scattered wildly.

A distant impact echoed through the corridors beyond the sealed doors.

Once.

Then again.

Ellis looked toward the entrance.

"They found us."

Captain Darius nodded grimly.

"Voren."

Another tremendous blow shook the doors.

Cracks spread across the ancient stone.

Maera stared in disbelief.

"Impossible."

"Those doors haven't opened for centuries."

"They won't."

Captain Darius corrected.

"They'll break."

The great doors shuddered beneath a third impact.

Stone dust rained onto the floor.

Veyra turned toward her soldiers.

"We don't have long."

Darius immediately understood.

"Ellis."

"Tovin."

"Prepare defensive positions."

"Merek, help Garron."

"Lyra, high ground."

The soldiers scattered with practiced precision.

Bookshelves became barricades.

Heavy stone tables were dragged into position.

Arrows were laid out.

Spears lowered.

No panic.

Only discipline.

Uriel remained standing before the mural.

His eyes lingered on the cracked Keeper carved into the stone.

The mask grew warm again.

This time...

The whisper was gentle.

"The Hall of Faces awaits."

He frowned.

"The Hall of Faces..."

Maera looked at him sharply.

"You heard that?"

Uriel nodded.

"I don't know what it means."

But she did.

Her face drained of color.

"The Hall of Faces..."

"It wasn't destroyed."

Captain Darius looked toward her.

"What is it?"

Maera swallowed slowly.

"The place..."

"...where the first Keeper was chosen."

Before anyone could ask another question—

The great doors exploded inward.

A wave of dust swept through the Vault.

Fragments of white stone crashed across the floor.

Through the settling smoke stepped Voren.

His armor was cracked.

Fresh blood ran from a wound across his brow.

Yet he still smiled.

Behind him...

Dozens of Black Blades entered the Vault in perfect silence.

Voren rested his massive sword upon his shoulder.

"I was hoping..."

"...you'd lead me here."

His eyes drifted past Uriel.

Toward the ancient relics surrounding them.

Then his smile slowly disappeared.

"So..."

"It really exists."
