The gunfire finally began to slow.

One rifle after another fell silent until only the echoes remained, rolling weakly across the frozen settlement before fading into the wind.

Smoke drifted from the barrels of the weapons.Full novel: Killer of Ice — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The sharp scent of burned metal mixed with blood and snow.

At the center of the platform— Shuan lay collapsed against the ice.

His body twitched weakly from the impact of the bullets.

Blood spread beneath him in dark crimson rivers, staining the white surface below like cracks across frozen glass.

One shot had torn through his shoulder completely.

Another had struck deep into his side.

His leg barely moved anymore.

Every breath sounded broken.

Pain pulsed through him in violent waves, so overwhelming that his thoughts could no longer remain clear.

The world felt distant now.

Distorted.

Like he was slowly sinking beneath icy water while the sounds above him faded farther away.

But he was still alive.

Barely.

His fingers trembled weakly against the snow.

His arms remained raised protectively near his head out of instinct even though the shooting had stopped.

He could still hear the rifles.

Still feel the impact of bullets tearing through flesh.

His entire body shook uncontrollably.

And then— the crowd erupted.

At first it was only a few voices.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

The plaza exploded with shouting.

Not fear.

Not horror.

Excitement.

Relief.

Triumph.

The people surrounding the platform began yelling over one another as if witnessing the death of a nightmare that had haunted them for generations.

“We did it!” “The monster is dead!” “The Eyes of Ice are finished!” Voices rose from every side.

Some people cried openly from emotion.

Others fell onto their knees in the snow, covering their faces while whispering prayers toward the gray sky above.

The fear that had filled the plaza only moments earlier was transforming into celebration.

Children who had hidden behind their parents now peeked outward carefully.

Several adults embraced one another tightly.

An old woman began sobbing while repeating blessings under her breath.

And through all of it— Shuan remained lying in blood at the center of the platform.

Alone.

Broken.

He barely understood the words reaching him now.

The cheering sounded warped and distant, like noise drifting from another world entirely.

But one thing became painfully clear even through the haze consuming his mind.

They were celebrating his death.

Hol slowly stepped forward to the front edge of the platform.

The crowd’s voices instantly rose louder at the sight of him.

The old man stood tall despite his age, snow swirling around the dark fabric of his coat while the metal speakers hanging above the plaza crackled faintly in the wind.

His breathing looked uneven.

His eyes wide.

Almost feverish.

Then suddenly he lifted both arms high into the air.

The crowd quieted just enough to hear him.

“We have destroyed one of the Eyes of Ice!” His voice thundered across the entire plaza.

The old speakers mounted around the settlement repeated his declaration with distorted force.

Destroyed one of the Eyes of Ice.

The sentence echoed again and again between the tents and frozen walls surrounding the settlement.

For one brief moment— complete silence followed.

Then the plaza exploded.

The cheering became deafening.

People screamed Hol’s name from every direction.

Some pounded their fists against their chests.

Others shouted prayers through tears.

“He protected us!” “Hol saved the settlement!” “The nightmare is over!” The energy spreading through the crowd felt almost violent now.

Years of fear.

Years of stories.

Years of surviving beneath endless winter.

All of it poured outward at once through desperate celebration.

And standing above the chaos— Hol accepted it.

His chest rose and fell heavily while the crowd worshipped him like a savior.

Like a man who had protected humanity itself.

Near the edge of the platform, Lemar watched everything silently.

Unlike the others, she did not cheer.

Did not shout.

Did not celebrate.

She simply stood beside Hol with calm eyes fixed on the bleeding figure in the snow.

Then slowly— for the first time since entering the plaza— she smiled.

A small smile.

Strange.

Difficult to understand.

Not happiness.

Not pity.

Something quieter than both.

Like the expression of someone observing a story that had not yet reached its ending.
