Prologue: Virtual Reality—N-dimensional World
In reality, we live in a three-dimensional world, but this is merely the limited cosmic space that humans can see and touch.
Beyond this, within the vast starry cosmos, whether there exist N other dimensions remains undetermined to this day.
We cannot define it, so we tentatively call it the N-dimensional World. It cannot be perceived with biological vision, explained with conventional thinking, nor measured with ordinary distances. It may be right before our eyes, or far beyond reach!
It has form yet is formless, seeming omnipresent. If one day you feel that a certain event seems to have happened before, that is its aura.
This sensation is both virtual and real, for it retains fragments of our own memories, yet is profoundly mysterious and fantastical, fleeting like a shadow or a dream, vanishing into emptiness like scattered fragments…
In this N-dimensional virtual reality, humanity remains its master, even synchronized with Earth’s civilization, having advanced to the era of mobile internet. Alternatively, unrestricted by time and space, the vast starry cosmos is traversed by various mysterious ancient legends, descendants of divine races, and malevolent forces… And this story is only a beginning…
Annotation and Original Declaration Regarding “Yan Corpse”
Yan Corpse: This is a technique stolen by the ancestors of the Nine Witches from Yan Shi’s arts. Using the Nine Witches’ sinister Corpse Refining Oil to nurture Gu Worms, the Gu transforms into Yan Corpse Water. They steal the bodies of the recently deceased (before the life force has fully dispersed and rigor mortis sets in) or those on the verge of death as mold materials, using Yan Corpse Water to create living dead, to be driven by the Nine Witches. In essence, it is a type of Living Dead Corpse Slave.
Yan Corpse Water has three functions: granting the Yan Corpse basic functions and producing Black Blood; preserving the corpse from decay for many years; and controlling the Yan Corpse through Corpse Gu.
Devoid of their own consciousness, though also living dead, Yan Corpses are more sinister, differing from Western Voodoo zombies.
The average “lifecycle” of a zombie is 3 to 5 years; in fact, they are also decaying, but at an extremely slow rate. However, as long as the Corpse Gu remains alive, the Yan Corpse is nearly “immortal.”
To some extent, Yan Corpses resemble biological zombies and modified zombies, but are more advanced and mysterious. Those not directly descended from the Nine Witches lack the ability to create such living dead through the Yan Corpse Technique.
To achieve certain objectives, the Gu master can at any time remodel the Yan Corpse into any physique, appearance, or gender, far surpassing the capabilities of modern surgery.
Transmission Method: Yan Corpses are not infected through the typical zombie method of viral (or voodoo) bites; instead, their transmission parallels the spreading of gu. The source of infection is the Black Blood of relatively powerful Yan Corpses (because it contains Yan Corpse Water, which harbors gu). Only children, extremely weak patients, or individuals with very low willpower are susceptible to contracting Corpse Gu, while stronger individuals are immune.
Disclaimer: Inheriting the cultural heritage of ancient Chinese Eastern fantasy and other humanistic traditions, the term “Yan Corpse” by the Nine Witches is an original creation from the series of novels such as The King of Demonic Gu by Zhai Yunyehe. Unauthorized commercial use is strictly prohibited. This is hereby declared!
Yan Shi and Ancient Performer Mecha
Yan Shi: This refers to an exceptional craftsman from the Western Zhou Dynasty, the creator of ancient Performer Mecha, who can be considered the originator of robots. Ancient Performer Mecha is the earliest recorded robot in China.
① According to historical records, as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty in 1046 BCE, the skilled Chinese craftsman Yan Shi successfully developed “Performers” capable of singing and dancing. This is considered the earliest documented robot in China. If this is taken as the **** of Chinese mecha civilization, China has possessed a mecha culture for nearly 3,000 years.
② According to legend, during the reign of the Son of Heaven, King Mu of Zhou enjoyed traveling. He once drove a chariot drawn by eight steeds across ninety thousand miles, journeying west to the Kunlun Mountains, where birds shed their feathers. There, he visited the palace of the Yellow Emperor and held a banquet at the Jade Pool, exchanging songs with the Queen Mother of the West.
On his return journey, he encountered Yan Shi, who presented King Mu with a group of Performers skilled in singing and dancing. The Performers opened their lips to sing melodies akin to divine hymns, and their movements resembled celestial beings from beyond the heavens—transcendent, ethereal, and dreamlike, captivating all spectators and making them forget worldly affairs.
King Mu clapped in delight, mistaking them for real people. He summoned Sheng Ji, palace attendants, and some prominent citizens to watch. At the end of the performance, one Performer blinked its eyes, seemingly flirting with one of King Mu’s concubines. The concubines were initially startled, then began batting their eyelashes at the Performer.
This enraged the Son of Heaven, who, in a fit of jealousy, immediately ordered Yan Shi to be taken out and executed.
Fortunately, Yan Shi acted swiftly, dissecting the Performer to show King Mu that it was merely assembled from materials such as leather, wood, bone glue, lacquer ink, yellow clay, ****, black powder, red powder, and blue powder.
King Mu examined it closely and found that the Performer’s internal organs—liver, gallbladder, heart, lungs, spleen, kidneys, intestines, and stomach—as well as its external features—tendons, bones, limbs, joints, skin, body hair, teeth, and hair—were all artificial, yet fully functional. When Yan Shi reassembled them, they appeared as lifelike as when first seen.
King Mu of Zhou smiled in relief and sighed, “Such divine skill rivals that of Nüwa, the creator of all living beings! Truly, you are a divine being!” He then bestowed upon Yan Shi a fiefdom, which subsequently became known as “Yan Shi.” Those Performers were a type of Song and Dance Yan Warrior.
Yan Shi became known to the world starting from the time of King Mu of Zhou.
