KORO’S POV I turned around to brush Rujin off, but the next words that rose from Rujin stopped me: “Stop running, Koro; our beasts are already in sync.” “So what?” I snapped at him and turned at him, and my eyes blazed at him.

“I felt you when you were in that cage; you used my Dragon power and felt how much you have been holding back.

It’s useless, Koro; we need each other.” Our eyes clashed, and Rujin closed the remaining distance between us in a single, fluid stride, his hands catching me by the waist and lifting me off the obsidian bench until my back pressed flat against the cool, dark stone wall behind it.Full novel: KYROS: FIRE AND ICE — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I let out a sharp gasp, my legs instinctively wrapping around his hips to anchor myself against the sheer, overwhelming wave of his proximity.

“You talk too much,” I whispered, my voice caught in the back of my throat as his face dropped into the crook of my neck.

“Then make me stop,” he growled.

His mouth found mine again, and any lingering pretence of the courtroom, the Syndicate, or the freezing world outside vanished.

This wasn’t the tentative, exploratory touch of two people testing the waters; it was a violent collision of elements that had been starved for centuries.

I dragged my hands through his dark hair, my short nails digging into his scalp as I pulled him deeper into the kiss, baring my fangs against his lip until the copper-sweet taste of his blood flooded my tongue.

The Vampire in my veins didn’t just drink; it opened the gates.

The golden-tinted essence of his fire rushed into my system, a liquid sun that ran down my throat and turned my frozen marrow to molten gold.

I shivered violently, a low, desperate whine breaking from my throat as my Wolf-half threw itself against the bars of my ribs, not to escape him, but to bury itself in his heat.

“Rujin…” I choked out against his lips, my hands sliding down to grip his broad shoulders.

“You’re…

you’re boiling.” “Then drain me,” he murmured, his breath a scalding sigh against my skin as his mouth moved down my jawline, leaving a trail of electric sparks in its wake.

“Take all of it, Koro.

I’ve been suffocating under this fire for twenty-five years.

You’re the only one who doesn’t turn to ash when I burn.” His hands slid beneath the hem of my singed shirt, his bare palms making direct contact with the skin of my waist.

The touch was a shockwave.

A visible wave of violet frost erupted from my skin, instantly clashing with the brilliant orange plasma radiating from his fingers.

The air between us hissed and crackled, small spirals of steam rising into the dark room as our elements fought, neutralized, and finally settled into a perfect, terrifying harmony.

He carried me across the room, his strides heavy and unbroken, never breaking the contact.

The golden thread of the Lock didn’t pull or tauten; it simply dissolved into a wide, luminous pool beneath us, expanding to swallow the entire space of the sleeping alcove.

We hit the massive, low-set bed in the center of the platform.

The dark silk sheets were cool for a fraction of a second before Rujin’s heat turned them into a warm hearth.

He came down over me, his large frame pinning me into the mattress, his dark hair falling forward to shadow his face.

I looked up at him, my breath coming in short, uneven gasps.

The golden rims of my violet eyes were glowing so brightly they illuminated the sharp lines of his face, the fierce, possessive curve of his jaw, and the absolute vulnerability hidden in the depths of his orange irises.

“You’re a tyrant,” I whispered, my hands resting against his chest, feeling the massive, rhythmic thud of his heart.

“And you dismantled my courtroom,” he countered, a soft, breathless laugh escaping his lips as he leaned down, his forehead resting against mine.

“You turned my enforcers to scrap metal and leveraged my life against the rulers of the city.

You aren’t a prisoner, Koro.

You’re the executioner, and I am entirely at your mercy.” “Don’t lie to me,” I muttered, my fingers curling into his hair, pulling his face back down to mine.

“You’ve never been at anyone’s mercy.” “I am at yours,” he whispered against my lips.

“Every second of every day.

Every time you breathe, my core tracks the rhythm.

If you look away, the winter takes my chest.

If you leave…

I burn.” The honesty of it was sharper than any knife.

It cut through the final remnants of my armour, leaving my hybrid heart completely exposed to him.

I didn’t answer with words.

I pulled him down into another kiss, my tongue tangling with his as the boundaries between our minds began to blur again.

I thought of the frozen face of my sister Nara inside her glass cryo-pod, her life clinging to a thread of power we were currently bleeding for.

“We’ll get her out,” Rujin murmured into the dark, his voice an absolute promise that echoed directly inside my head.

He had felt the thought before I could even voice it.

“We’ll take the medical tier, Koro.

We’ll take the whole Spire if we have to.

But she will breathe the air outside this glass.

I swear it to you.” I let out a shaky, shuddering breath, my eyes closing as a single, hot tear slipped down my temple.

Rujin caught it with his thumb, his warm skin brushing the moisture away before it could freeze against my skin.

“Why are you doing this?” I whispered, my hands sliding around his back, pulling him down until his weight was a comforting, grounding pressure over my entire body.

“Why jeopardize everything you’ve built for a hybrid slave?” Rujin shifted, rolling onto his side but keeping me locked tightly against his chest.

His long legs intertwined with mine, and his arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling my back against his stomach.

He tucked his chin into the crook of my neck, his breath a constant, soothing heat against my pulse point.

“Because the empire I built was just a gilded cage, little wolf,” he murmured into the dark, his voice dropping to a sleepy, gravelly timbre as the sheer exhaustion of the day finally began to claim him.

“I thought I owned the sun, but I was just its first prisoner.

Then I found you and for the first time in twenty-five years…

I didn’t want to rule the world.

I just wanted to keep you warm.” The sheer, overwhelming safety of his embrace was a narcotic.

For weeks, my body had been a battlefield, the Wolf and the Vampire tearing at my sanity, the cold starving my joints, the dampeners crushing my spirit, but here, tucked into the furnace of the Dragon’s chest, the noise stopped.

My Wolf settled into the dark sand of my mind, its heavy head resting on its paws as it watched the orange embers glow, and My Vampire curled tight against the core, sated, full, and quiet for the first time since my transformation.

The golden pool of the Thermal Lock pulsed softly beneath the mattress, a gentle, rhythmic heartbeat that ran through both of our bodies in perfect synchronization I let my head fall back against his shoulder, my fingers interlocking with his large, warm hand where it rested over my heart, and we were currently sleeping in each other’s arms, preparing for the fire that would inevitably follow the dawn.

“Don’t let go,” I whispered into the fading twilight of my consciousness.

Rujin’s grip tightened around my waist, his thumb tracing a slow, warm circle over my ribcage as his breathing settled into the deep, slow rhythm of sleep.

“Never,” he murmured.

The dark finally claimed us, the winter outside the window continued to fall, but inside the bed of embers, the cold didn’t stand a chance.
