Blue light appeared in front of Rafael.
[TRAINING MISSION: SHARPEN THE FINISH]
[Objective: Score at least six times from your next ten attempts while using no more than two touches.]
[Reward: Finishing +0.2]
[ACCEPT]
Rafael read the objective.
The reward was smaller than anything the System had offered for his career decisions or competitive match. That made sense. Repeating an academy drill carried less difficulty and consequence than changing his future or scoring under match pressure.
He focused on the button.
[Training Mission Accepted.]
The player in front of him completed his turn and moved aside.
Rafael stepped forward.
His first delivery came from the right.
The defender chased from behind as Rafael entered the box. Yanis sent the ball toward the penalty spot, and Rafael could see the goalkeeper shifting his weight toward the far corner.
Rafael met the pass first time and turned it inside the near post.
One.
During his next repetition, the left winger’s delivery arrived farther ahead of him. Rafael took one touch to pull the ball across the recovering defender before shooting with his right foot.
The goalkeeper dropped quickly and pushed the effort away.
The third pass came directly into Rafael’s path.
He finished first time across goal.
Two.
The next defender recovered more quickly and reached the ball as Rafael prepared to shoot. The block sent it spinning beyond the penalty area.
Rafael returned to the line without arguing. He had delayed the finish long enough to give the defender a chance.
Four attempts. Two goals.
He scored from each of the next three deliveries.
One was guided beneath the goalkeeper after a cutback from Yanis. Another came from a low cross which Rafael allowed to travel across his body before using his second touch to find the far corner. The fifth goal required a first-time finish after the defender blocked his route toward the centre.
Several players waiting behind the drill had begun counting.
"Five from seven," someone said.
The goalkeeper heard him. "He’s finished, then."
Rafael stepped forward for his eighth attempt.
The winger drove the ball hard toward him. Rafael controlled with his left foot, but the touch remained too close to the goalkeeper’s side of the goal. His right-footed shot lacked enough angle to escape.
The goalkeeper blocked it with his leg.
"Finished," the goalkeeper repeated.
"Two more," Rafael said.
His ninth delivery came from the right.
Yanis looked toward the near post before cutting the ball behind Rafael’s first movement.
Rafael stopped, allowed the pass to cross in front of him and placed it into the bottom corner with his right foot.
Six.
The mission had been completed, but the drill continued.
On his final attempt, the defender positioned himself closer to Rafael’s right side, trying to prevent him from opening his body toward the far corner.
Rafael moved toward the near post and took the delivery on his left foot. The touch carried the ball away from the defender.
The goalkeeper moved across goal, expecting the usual right-footed finish.
Rafael struck with his left.
The shot travelled inside the near post.
Seven goals from ten attempts.
The goalkeeper retrieved the ball and threw it back toward the line.
"You didn’t use your right."
"That was the idea."
The coach had been watching from several metres away.
"Good finishing," he said. "Keep arriving balanced."
That was all.
The next striker stepped forward, and the drill resumed.
Rafael moved toward the back of the line. Yanis gave him a sideways look as he approached.
"So Sunday wasn’t an accident."
"You sound disappointed."
"I was hoping to take the credit."
"You still will."
"Of course."
The session moved into a small-sided match across two-thirds of the pitch.
Rafael played for the team in burgundy bibs. He did not begin searching for shots merely because the System had rewarded his finishing.
When he received between the lines, he returned the ball toward midfield before the defender could close him. During the next attack, he dropped away from the defensive line and drew a centre-back forward, opening space for the left winger to run behind.
The pass did not reach him. An opposing midfielder intercepted it and started a counterattack in the opposite direction.
Rafael recovered into position rather than stopping to complain.
Several minutes later, Metz’s right-sided midfielder regained possession and played toward Rafael’s feet.
Rafael checked over his shoulder.
The centre-back had followed him. Rafael returned the ball with one touch and turned toward the penalty area while the midfielder released Yanis on the right.
Yanis accelerated beyond the full-back.
Rafael approached the box through the centre, while the left winger attacked the far post. The defender remained tight enough to prevent Rafael from meeting an early cross.
Yanis continued toward the byline.
Rafael slowed and moved half a step behind the centre-back.
The low cross travelled across the defender’s front foot.
Rafael allowed the ball to pass him.
For a moment, the centre-back thought it had escaped both of them.
Rafael’s first touch stopped it behind the defender’s stride.
His second sent it into the bottom corner.
The goalkeeper shifted too late.
The coach placed another ball near the halfway line before anyone could celebrate.
"Again!"
Rafael jogged back into position.
The match continued for another ten minutes. He missed one chance from a narrow angle, helped create another by laying the ball into midfield and finished the session with sweat running beneath his shirt.
The coach’s whistle ended play.
Blue light appeared as the players slowed.
[TRAINING MISSION COMPLETE]
[Finishing +0.2]
[CLAIM REWARD]
Rafael left the panel open at the edge of his vision.
He helped Yanis carry the training poles toward the equipment trolley, then collected several loose footballs with the other players. When the group began moving back toward the academy building, Rafael fell a few steps behind.
He focused on the button.
[Finishing +0.2 Applied.]
[CLOSE]
There was no heat, sudden strength or visible change.
Rafael closed the panel.
His finishing had improved by two-tenths of a point. It was not enough to turn one saved effort into a goal or erase a technical mistake. Hundreds of gains like it would be needed before his body could execute everything his mind understood.
The coach called his name before he reached the building.
"Morales."
Rafael stopped and turned.
"Sunday will be different," the coach said. "Their staff will know what happened this weekend. Their centre-backs won’t give you the same room inside the box."
"I know."
"They’ll stay tight and try to keep you facing away from goal."
Rafael nodded.
"Be ready for it."
The coach walked toward the equipment trolley without adding anything else.
Rafael followed the others inside.
The first match had reminded everyone that he could score.
The next would show whether knowing that could stop him.
