The Metz team bus stopped beside a low concrete stand.

A single covered section faced the pitch, while parents gathered along the metal barriers surrounding the other three sides. Home staff were already placing equipment near the benches.

The Metz players left the bus, collected their bags and entered the changing room beneath the stand.Full novel: Legacy N09 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Rafael found the number nine shirt waiting at his place.

As he changed, his thoughts passed briefly over the days since Tuesday.

Wednesday and Thursday had combined schoolwork with tactical training. The coaches repeatedly placed a centre-back tight behind Rafael and asked him to receive under pressure. When the System offered a mission based on his next ten receptions, Rafael accepted it.

He protected the ball, laid it off or escaped with his first touch nine times. On the remaining attempt, the defender reached around him and poked the ball away.

The reward appeared after Thursday’s session.

[TRAINING MISSION COMPLETE]

[Successful Receptions: 9/10]

[Reward: 0.5 Training Attribute Point]

[ALLOCATE]

Rafael assigned it to Ball Control.

[Ball Control +0.5]

[Reward Applied.]

[CLOSE]

The improvement had not made contact disappear. Defenders could still dispossess him if his positioning or first touch was poor. The ball simply stayed slightly closer when pressure arrived.

Friday brought a lighter session and confirmation that he would start again. Rafael spent Saturday resting, completing his schoolwork and preparing for the match.

The changing-room door closed.

The coach waited until every player was looking at him.

"The centre-back tracking Morales will leave space behind him. Use it. If he steps forward, one of you attacks the gap before they can cover."

He looked briefly at Rafael.

"You’ve worked on the rest."

Rafael nodded.

The coach reminded the full-backs about the home side’s wingers, gave the midfielders their pressing positions and sent the players outside.

During the warm-up, Rafael noticed one of the home centre-backs watching him from near the halfway line.

The defender was slightly taller than him and broader through the shoulders. Whenever Rafael took a shot or moved across the penalty area, the man’s attention followed.

By kick-off, Rafael knew which defender had been assigned to him.

The first contact came in the third minute.

A Metz midfielder passed firmly into Rafael’s feet. Before the ball arrived, the centre-back pressed a forearm against his back and leaned through him.

Rafael widened his stance, controlled with his right foot and returned the ball with his left.

The defender followed for another step before dropping into the back line.

During Rafael’s next movement toward the ball, the contact arrived even earlier. A hand settled against his shoulder, preventing him from turning before he had received the pass.

Rafael laid it back to midfield.

The home side had prepared for him.

He did not answer by attempting to beat the defender every time he touched the ball.

During Metz’s next attack, Rafael moved across the defensive line before dropping toward Yanis. His marker followed him away from the centre.

Rafael received and returned the pass first time.

Then he turned and ran into the space the defender had abandoned.

Yanis attempted to find him, but the second centre-back read the pass and cleared toward the touchline.

Rafael slowed and returned to position.

The move had failed, but it confirmed that the marking could pull one defender out of the line. Metz needed to move the ball quickly enough to use the opening before the second centre-back covered it.

Rafael kept his next involvements simple.

He redirected one pass toward the left wing, returned another to midfield and won a free kick when the centre-back arrived through his back after the ball had gone.

The referee warned the defender.

As they waited for the restart, the centre-back moved close enough for his shoulder to touch Rafael’s.

"You’re not turning today."

Rafael gave no answer.

The home side created the first clear chance around the twentieth minute.

Metz lost possession in midfield with their left-back already moving forward. The home side immediately released their right winger into the space behind him.

The nearest centre-back moved across to delay the attack, but the winger pushed toward the byline and drove a low cross through the penalty area.

The ball passed behind the goalkeeper and beyond the first defender.

At the back post, the home striker reached it before the recovering full-back and guided it into the net.

The spectators behind the goal erupted.

The scorer continued toward the corner while Metz’s goalkeeper pointed toward the far post and demanded that someone track the run.

Rafael waited near the centre circle.

The referee called both teams back.

Metz restarted without abandoning their shape. The midfielders moved the ball across the pitch, searching for space around the home side’s compact block.

Rafael began changing his position along the defensive line.

He moved toward the left. His marker followed, stopped and pointed toward the full-back.

Rafael returned to the centre.

The defender came with him.

During the next attack, Rafael crossed toward the right. The centre-back followed again, leaving his partner to protect the middle alone.

No immediate chance appeared, but every movement forced the home defence to make another decision.

Near the half-hour mark, Rafael received with the centre-back against his back and attempted to roll toward the right.

His first touch escaped the defender.

The home defensive midfielder arrived from the front and took the ball before Rafael could accelerate.

Metz recovered before the counterattack became dangerous.

Rafael moved back toward halfway.

The additional Ball Control had helped him beat the first challenge. It had not shown him the second opponent or removed him from the pitch.

He began scanning earlier.

Before each pass travelled toward him, Rafael checked the centre-back behind him, the position of the defensive midfielder and the available space around the second defender.

Several minutes before halftime, Metz moved possession through the centre.

Rafael started beside his marker, then checked away toward the left as though preparing to attack the channel.

The defender shifted with him.

Rafael stopped and returned sharply toward the ball.

The Metz midfielder saw the movement and passed into his feet.

Rafael had already checked over his shoulder.

The centre-back closed the final step and pressed through his back. Rafael felt the defender’s weight and allowed him to commit.

The defender planted his right foot beside Rafael.

Rafael opened his body and took his first touch across that leg.

The ball stayed within his stride.

The centre-back attempted to turn, but his momentum carried him in the opposite direction. Rafael moved beyond him and entered the penalty area.

The second centre-back stepped across.

The goalkeeper advanced, lowering his body to narrow the angle.

Rafael used his second touch to drive the ball low across goal.

The goalkeeper stretched out his right leg.

The shot passed beyond it and reached the far corner.

Rafael turned toward the midfielder who had supplied the pass. The teammate met him near the edge of the area, and the rest of the Metz players arrived seconds later.

The celebration was brief.

Rafael pulled free and jogged toward the centre circle.

Behind him, his marker pointed angrily toward the second centre-back. The other defender responded by indicating the space Rafael had entered.

Metz had found the gap between them.

The score was 1–1.

The remaining minutes of the half passed without another clear chance.

Inside the changing room, the coach corrected Metz’s positioning before the opening goal and told the midfielders to keep moving the ball before the home side could close around Rafael.

The second half began with the home side changing its defensive approach.

Whenever Rafael dropped toward midfield, the defensive midfielder moved closer. The centre-back continued following from behind, while the second player blocked the space in front of him.

Rafael’s first attempt to receive ended with the ball trapped between all three players before the defensive midfielder kicked it away.

The next time, Rafael returned the pass but could not turn toward goal.

Metz’s following attack travelled down the left without involving him. The winger entered the final third and crossed, but the home goalkeeper claimed the ball before Rafael could reach the six-yard box.

The defenders had adjusted.

Rafael stopped looking for another way to beat both markers.

If two opponents wanted to follow him, space had to be opening somewhere else.

He began drifting deeper before changing direction toward either channel. Sometimes only the centre-back followed. On other occasions, the defensive midfielder moved too, unwilling to leave Rafael free between the lines.

Metz began using the openings.

One midfielder carried the ball through the centre before passing wide. Yanis received another pass with room to advance, but his cross travelled beyond everyone inside the penalty area.

He raised one hand in apology as they returned to position.

Around the sixty-fifth minute, the home side won a free kick near the touchline. The delivery reached the penalty area, where a Metz defender headed it clear.

Yanis collected the loose ball and carried possession beyond halfway before being forced outside.

The home full-back recovered and ended the counterattack near the corner.

The winning move began several minutes later.

A Metz centre-back stepped forward with the ball and found a midfielder beyond the first line of pressure.

Rafael moved into the space between the home defence and midfield.

The pass came into his feet.

The centre-back followed immediately and pressed against his back. The defensive midfielder closed from the front, preventing Rafael from turning toward goal.

Rafael returned the ball with one touch.

Then he ran toward the right channel.

The centre-back followed him.

The defensive midfielder hesitated before moving the same way, expecting Rafael to receive the return pass.

Their movement opened the middle.

The Metz midfielder played forward through the gap.

Yanis had left the touchline and entered the space both markers had abandoned.

He collected the pass in stride and entered the penalty area.

The remaining centre-back moved across, but Yanis shot before the challenge arrived.

The ball travelled beyond the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

Yanis continued toward the corner with both arms spread.

His teammates surrounded him near the barrier. Rafael reached the group last and struck him once between the shoulders before the referee called everyone back.

Metz led 2–1.

They protected the advantage without retreating completely into their penalty area.

The defensive line remained connected to midfield, forcing the home side toward the wings. Their full-backs advanced and delivered crosses, but Metz dealt with the first contact.

Rafael continued providing an outlet near halfway.

One clearance reached him with the centre-back close behind. Rafael protected the ball until the defender pulled him backward, earning Metz a free kick.

Several minutes later, he held another pass long enough to return it to midfield. The next clearance escaped him and allowed the home side to attack again.

He did not win every duel.

He won enough to prevent Metz from spending the entire closing period inside their own penalty area.

With less than ten minutes remaining, the number nine appeared on the substitution board.

Rafael jogged off as the replacement striker waited beside the fourth official. Several Metz parents applauded from behind the barrier.

The coach met Rafael at the edge of the technical area and tapped him once on the shoulder before turning back toward the pitch.

Rafael took his place among the substitutes.

The home side created one final chance from a cross toward the far post. Their winger reached it but headed over the bar under pressure from the Metz full-back.

Metz slowed the remaining minutes whenever they recovered possession.

The final whistle confirmed the 2–1 victory.

Rafael joined the handshake line. His marker released his hand quickly and walked toward the home changing room without speaking.

The Metz players packed their bags and returned to the bus.

Conversation filled the journey home, but Rafael remained beside the window, listening without joining the arguments around him.

The opposition ground disappeared behind them.

Blue light gathered across his vision.
