The opposing left-back remained on the grass with both hands covering his face while the referee called for the medical staff. Twenty-six minutes had passed in the first of Metz’s final four league fixtures, and neither side had created a clear chance. Metz controlled most of the possession, but the home team defended in two narrow lines with a midfielder occupying the space Rafael preferred to use. Their centre-backs refused to follow him away from the penalty area, leaving the midfield to deal with him whenever he dropped short.
It was different from the previous match. Those defenders had followed Rafael everywhere and tried to stop him from turning. These two were willing to let him receive twenty-five metres from goal because every step he took toward midfield carried him farther from the penalty area. Metz’s midfielders recognised the trap and circulated possession from side to side instead of forcing passes through the crowded centre.
The result was safe, slow football.
Rafael walked toward the technical area and drank from the bottle handed to him by the assistant coach. The injury stoppage offered his first quiet moment since kick-off and briefly returned his thoughts to the week leading into the match.
School had occupied his mornings, while academy sessions filled his afternoons. During Wednesday’s conditioned attacking exercise, pale blue light had appeared beside the pitch.
[TRAINING MISSION]
[One-Touch Link]
[Objective: Complete eight successful one-touch layoffs during the conditioned attacking drill.]
[Reward: Short Passing +0.2]
[ACCEPT]
Rafael had accepted before returning to the exercise. The attacking team needed to progress through three marked zones before entering the penalty area, and the forwards were limited to two touches whenever they received with their backs to goal.
He attempted ten first-time layoffs. Eight reached their intended teammate, one arrived too hard for the midfielder to control and a defender anticipated the last. The System appeared after the final block.
[TRAINING MISSION COMPLETE]
[Reward Applied: Short Passing +0.2]
The reward had not transformed Rafael’s passing. The ball simply left his foot with slightly cleaner weight whenever he redirected it over a short distance. It was a fractional improvement to an ordinary attribute, but Rafael understood how often attacks failed because a pass arrived half a metre behind the next player.
The injured full-back sat up, and Rafael returned the bottle before looking toward the pitch. The home side’s defensive midfielder stood near the centre circle, listening to instructions from his coach, while both centre-backs remained inside their own half.
They had no intention of following Rafael out. He would have to make their midfield move instead.
The medical staff helped the full-back toward the touchline, and the referee restarted play. Metz sent possession backward before building down the right. Yanis received near the touchline with the opposing winger closing him, while Rafael crossed in front of the defensive midfielder and offered himself inside.
A Metz midfielder passed into his feet. Rafael returned the ball first time and continued forward. The defensive midfielder stepped after him, expecting another pass, but the ball travelled diagonally toward Yanis instead. Yanis moved inside as the right-back advanced beyond him, forcing the home side’s midfield to turn toward its own goal for the first time.
Yanis released the overlapping full-back, but the pass carried too close to the corner flag. The defender recovered and blocked the cross behind. The move ended with a corner rather than a shot, yet Metz had reached the penalty area in half the time their earlier attacks required.
The corner travelled over Rafael and was headed clear. Metz recovered the ball near halfway and attacked again. Rafael dropped toward midfield with the defensive midfielder following closely. He used his body to protect the pass and laid it toward the left-sided midfielder before turning back toward the penalty area.
The contact knocked him half a step forward, but the ball reached its target. Metz switched possession toward the left winger, who attempted to beat the full-back on the outside. The defender matched his run and forced him backward, allowing the home side to recover its shape.
A compact defence would not collapse because of one combination. It wanted Metz to become impatient, force a pass through a closed lane and surrender possession. Rafael stayed high during the next sequence instead of searching for another touch.
Metz moved the ball from left to right. Yanis received near the touchline, and Rafael checked toward him. The defensive midfielder followed, closing the central lane, but Rafael stopped before the pass arrived. His sudden change of direction left the midfielder moving the wrong way and allowed a Metz teammate to enter the space behind him.
Yanis found the midfielder, and the nearest centre-back finally stepped forward. The next pass came into Rafael’s feet.
Rafael could have attempted to turn. The centre-back had arrived slightly off balance, and there was room beside his planted foot. Instead, Rafael returned the ball first time to the midfielder already running beyond him.
The midfielder carried possession toward the right side of the penalty area and slipped Yanis into the channel. The opposing full-back moved across, forcing Yanis away from goal, but Metz’s right-back continued his overlap and received the next pass near the byline.
Three quick passes had carried the ball through the entire defensive block.
Rafael entered the area as both centre-backs retreated toward the six-yard box. He began moving toward the near post, drawing the closest defender with him, then stopped near the penalty spot. The defender took another step toward his own goal before realising Rafael had remained behind him.
The right-back drove the ball away from the goalkeeper and into Rafael’s path.
Rafael met it with the inside of his right foot. He did not swing through the finish or attempt to overpower the goalkeeper. He guided the ball along the grass and inside the bottom-left corner.
The goalkeeper had already shifted his weight toward the near post. By the time he changed direction, the ball had passed beyond his hand and entered the net.
Rafael turned toward the right-back, who reached him first and struck both hands against his shoulders.
"That’s the pass!" Rafael shouted.
Yanis arrived a second later and pulled both of them into the celebration. The midfielder who had started the combination joined from behind before the remaining Metz players surrounded them.
Nobody acted surprised that Rafael had scored. Their excitement came from finally breaking the defensive structure that had frustrated them throughout the opening half.
The celebration ended quickly. As Rafael jogged toward the centre circle, pale blue light appeared beside his vision.
