The two teams warmed up at opposite ends of the pitch.

Rafael remained with the U19 starters in burgundy bibs. Yanis moved through the passing routine on his right, while the players who had secured qualification five days earlier occupied their usual positions around them.

Most belonged to the reserve squad but had not been selected for Sunday’s match. Several players from the older academy group completed the side.

Nobody shouted across the pitch or tried to intimidate the U19s.

The difference appeared whenever the ball moved. Passes travelled harder, touches carried players into their next action and each exercise reorganised within seconds.

Rafael had faced stronger footballers in his previous life.

He had also possessed a body hardened by years of senior competition before injuries began taking pieces from it. His seventeen-year-old legs were faster than the damaged ones he remembered, but they lacked the strength and automatic responses developed through hundreds of professional matches.

One attribute point had made him slightly firmer through contact.

The next seventy minutes would show how little that meant against older players.

The coaches removed the final cones. An academy staff member stood near the centre circle with a whistle while the teams completed their last preparations.

They would play two thirty-five-minute halves, followed by recovery work.

The U19 coach gathered his players.

"Keep the distances short. If you lose possession, recover your shape before chasing it. They want to stretch you."

His attention settled briefly on Rafael.

"Release the ball early. You will not get the same time you had on Sunday."

Rafael nodded.

Pale blue light formed across his vision.

[TRAINING MISSION]

[Bonus Objective: Score against the reserve side.]

[Reward: Short Passing +0.2]

[Bonus Reward: Striker Skill ×1]

[ACCEPT MISSION]

[DECLINE MISSION]

Five successful passes across seventy minutes sounded simple.

The centre-back waiting behind him suggested otherwise.

Rafael accepted.

[Training Mission Accepted.]

[Hold-Up Sequences: 0/5]

[Bonus Objective: 0/1]

[CLOSE]

The panel disappeared.

The whistle started the match.

Metz’s first possession ended before they crossed halfway.

The ball travelled through defence and into midfield, where a reserve player arrived from the receiver’s blind side. The challenge forced a loose pass, and the team in white recovered without breaking stride.

They moved it backwards once before switching play.

Rafael adjusted his angle to block the route into midfield. He recognised where the next pass would go, but the centre-back released it before Rafael reached him.

The U19s shifted across.

Another pass carried possession away from their pressure.

The reserve side were not doing anything complicated. They recognised danger sooner and completed ordinary actions faster.

For the opening minutes, Metz struggled to escape their own half. Whenever they recovered possession, a white shirt reached the first receiver before he could turn.

Rafael dropped toward midfield to provide an outlet.

The pass came into his feet.

He had checked the defender’s position moments earlier and expected contact against his back. Instead, the centre-back stepped around his left side as the ball arrived. A boot reached between Rafael’s feet and knocked it away before he could secure his touch.

The defender collected possession and passed inside.

Against most U19 centre-backs, Rafael would have controlled the ball before the challenge arrived. Here, recognising the danger had not been enough.

The next time Metz regained possession, he moved farther from the defensive line and approached the pass.

Contact followed.

The centre-back gave him a small shove between the shoulder blades as Rafael guided the ball away with his right foot. His weight pitched forward, but he remained close enough to return possession to the midfielder.

The academy official allowed play to continue.

The push had been slight enough to overlook and carefully timed. Rafael remembered senior defenders surviving entire careers through challenges like it.

Complaining would not return the second he had already lost.

The reserve team soon regained control. Their right-back advanced beyond Yanis, received near the touchline and played inside before the winger could recover. Two quick passes carried the ball toward the penalty area.

A shot followed from outside the box.

Metz’s goalkeeper pushed it around the post.

The corner was cleared, but the team in white collected the second ball and rebuilt instead of forcing another delivery.

Yanis dropped closer to Rafael while Metz waited for an opportunity to press.

"They release everything early," he said.

"That’s why we can’t reach them."

The reserve centre-back passed into midfield, ending the conversation.

A poor touch finally gave Metz an opening. Their midfielder reached the loose ball and played forward before the opposition could surround him.

Rafael checked toward the right.

The centre-back followed closely and leaned into him as the pass arrived. Rafael allowed the ball to travel across his body, absorbed the pressure and returned it inside with the outside of his foot.

His teammate received and moved possession wide.

The defender released Rafael immediately rather than allowing himself to be dragged out of position.

Two successful sequences.

Neither had created anything dangerous, but Metz had survived the pressure twice.

The U19s gradually adjusted to the pace. Their possessions remained shorter, although they no longer surrendered the ball with every forward pass. The back line stopped advancing together, leaving less room for the reserve attackers whenever play broke down.

Rafael spent several minutes moving between the centre-backs without receiving.

One stayed close. The other dropped several metres, ready to collect anything played beyond them.

They had already removed the runs he normally used against defenders his own age.

He stopped searching for the same opening.

When Metz recovered possession near halfway, Rafael dropped once more. The nearest centre-back followed and pressed into his back.

Rafael met the pass with his right foot and laid it into midfield before the defender could settle against him.

Then he turned and ran.

The midfielder found Yanis on the right before the reserve side could close the space. Yanis drove forward, forcing the left-back to retreat toward his penalty area.

Rafael continued through the middle.

The centre-back who had followed him was half a step behind, while the covering defender moved across to protect the six-yard box.

Yanis sent a low cross toward the penalty spot.

It reached Rafael slightly behind his stride.

Blue light flashed.

[Two-Touch Finisher Activated.]

His first touch brought the ball across his body and away from the recovering defender.

The goalkeeper advanced.

Rafael used his second to send the shot beneath the man’s right arm.

The ball struck the inside of the far post and entered the net.

Yanis reached Rafael and slapped the back of his shoulder.

"That better count as my assist."

"It’s a training match."

"It counts to me."

Rafael allowed himself a brief smile before directing him toward halfway.

Metz led 1–0.
