The leather interior of the luxury sedan smelled expensive—a sterile, suffocating blend of high-end polish, brand-new upholstery, and the faint, chilling trace of Julian’s distinct scent.

Kristen pressed his forehead firmly against the cool, heavily tinted glass of the passenger window, watching the jagged, familiar silhouette of the Ironbound forest slowly shrink into the consuming darkness of the distance.

A single, weathered canvas duffel bag held absolutely everything he owned in the world.

His family had stayed back at the main house, his mother’s eyes completely hollow with a heavy, unspoken grief, and his father still protectively clutching his bruised, recovering throat as they exchanged their silent goodbyes.

His friends had tried to follow the car on foot down the unpaved pathway, desperate to accompany him to the outer iron gates, but Kristen had used his authority to order them to stay back.

This was his cross to bear, and he would not let them witness any more of his humiliation.

As the tires smoothly transitioned from the bumpy, unpaved forest roads onto a perfectly paved, multi-lane modern highway, the oppressive darkness of the woods suddenly dissolved into an explosion of artificial color.

Kristen’s breath hitched in his throat, his golden eyes widening in completely involuntary awe.

He had never been out of the pack territory.

For twenty-two years, his existence had been strictly defined by forest boundaries, towering trees, and the constant, underlying fear of human trackers.

To him, the “outside world” had always been described by the elders as a dangerous, concrete wasteland crawling with lethal hunters, advanced surveillance technology, and high-tech scanners designed to trap and dissect supernaturals.

But looking out the window now, the city looked like an entire galaxy brought down to earth.

Massive skyscrapers loomed like dark, majestic monuments against the night sky, their glass facades shimmering with thousands of brilliant white, electric blue, and warm amber lights.

Neon signs pulsed rhythmically along the bustling streets, casting vibrant pink and crimson reflections over the rain-slicked pavement below.

Bridges stretched elegantly across a vast, pitch-black river, illuminated by perfectly synchronized rows of vintage streetlamps that looked like glowing gold thread woven into the night.

Vehicles zipped past their sedan in an endless, flashing stream of headlights and tail-lights, a blur of motion that Kristen’s sharp senses struggled to fully track.

It was overwhelming.

It was terrifyingly beautiful.

‘Look at all those lights,’ his inner wolf whispered, its voice echoing with the exact same childlike wonder Kristen was trying desperately to suppress.

‘It’s like a sky full of fallen stars.

Maybe the outside isn’t completely terrible, Kristen.

Maybe there’s a reason people leave the trees.’

Don’t get distracted, Kristen snapped back mentally, though he couldn’t tear his eyes away from a massive digital billboard flashing a vibrant, moving advertisement high above an intersection.

It’s a trap.

The humans built all of this, and the vampires are the ones pulling the strings.

We are entering enemy territory.

That was the most confusing and bitter part of his mother’s revelation.

He had spent his whole life believing that the vampires—just like the werewolves—were miserable, desperate parasites lurking in the deep, damp caves of the forest, hiding from human extinction.

But as the sedan glided deeper into the heart of the city’s elite diamond district, Kristen realized how fundamentally wrong he had been.

The vampires were in hiding, but they were hiding in plain sight.

They didn’t hide in dirt and mud; they hid in multi-million-dollar penthouses.

They wore tailored black suits, drove silent luxury cars, and used their evolved traits—like walking seamlessly in the broad daylight—to blend into human high society without raising a single suspicion.

They accumulated massive wealth, bought up the city’s critical supply lines, and ruled from the shadows of glass towers while the wolves starved in the mud, stubbornly clinging to outdated ideas of pack pride and historical grudges.

The silence inside the car stretched so taut it felt like a single wrong breath would snap it.

Kristen kept his gaze glued to the glass, but the mesmerizing view of the skyscrapers soon lost its initial charm, replaced by the suffocating awareness of the predator lounging just inches away from him in the dark. This story is hosted at novelping . com.

Vampires didn’t radiate body heat.

Sitting next to Julian was like sitting next to an open freezer door; a localized, chilling draft that constantly reminded Kristen his companion was technically dead, a reanimated corpse playing at being an aristocrat.

“Do you like the view, my dear Alpha?”

The smooth, mocking baritone shattered Kristen’s trance.

He didn’t even have to turn his head to know Julian was staring at him.

The vampire was lounging in the opposite corner of the spacious leather backseat, his long legs crossed with an infuriating elegance, his crimson eyes glowing faintly in the dim interior of the car.

Kristen slowly pulled his forehead away from the glass, forcing his expression into a cold, indifferent mask.

He settled back against the leather seats, clenching his fists tightly in his lap to stop his hands from shaking under the heavy, oppressive aura filling the vehicle.

“I’ve seen better,” Kristen lied flatly, his gravelly voice tight and strained.

Julian let out a soft, melodious chuckle that vibrated right through the small, enclosed space of the sedan.

He reached into a hidden compartment in the car, pulling out a sleek, gold-embossed folder and started casually flipping through it.

“Lying doesn’t suit a creature of nature, Kristen,” Julian purred, a wicked, knowing smirk playing on his pale lips.

“Your heart rate spiked the exact moment we hit the city limits, and your pupils are practically swallowing the neon lights.

It’s quite adorable, really.

Like bringing a wild, uneducated pup into a royal palace.

You can’t hide your fascination from me.”

Kristen’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth blipped into sharp fangs for a split second, a low growl threatening to escape his throat.

He glared at the gold folder, then snapped his gaze up to meet the vampire prince’s eyes.

“You’re scenting me, aren’t you?” Kristen stated flatly, shifting his weight.

“Stop it.

It’s disgusting.”

“Just tell me where we’re going, Vance.

I don’t need your commentary.”

Julian didn’t look away from his gold-embossed folder, his long, pale fingers casually turning a thick page.

“A wolf’s scent is entirely impossible to ignore, my dear Alpha.

It’s loud, messy, and currently saturated with an incredibly delicious cocktail of fear and defiance.

You smell like pine needles burning in a wildfire.

Why would I stop enjoying the fragrance of my new property?”

Kristen’s head snapped around completely, his golden eyes flaring to life in the dim interior.

“I am an Alpha of the Ironbound pack, not your fucking property.

Watch your mouth before I tear it right off your face.”

Julian slowly closed the folder.

The soft thud of the paper sounded like a gunshot in the quiet car.

He turned his head, his crimson eyes locking onto Kristen’s with a terrifying, unblinking intensity.

The amused, playful prince vanished in an instant, replaced by the cold, ancient monster that had brought the pack elders to their knees just hours before.

“You have a remarkable amount of bark for a dog whose family is currently breathing solely because of my mercy,” Julian murmured, his voice dropping into a chilling, soft register that made Kristen’s skin prickle.

“Let’s review the harsh reality of your situation, Kristen, since your thick wolf skull seems to be struggling to process it.

You are in my car.

You are entering my city.

By midnight, you will be under my roof, bound by an unbreakable contract that dictates your absolute submission to me.”

“A piece of paper doesn’t make me submissive,” Kristen hissed, his fangs pushing past his gums as his inner wolf roared in agreement.

‘Let me bite him, Kristen.

Just one taste of his throat.

Let’s see if his blood is as cold as his heart.’

“No,” Julian agreed, a slow, wicked smirk returning to his lips, though his eyes remained dead and calculating.

“The paper just legalizes it.

I am going to make you submissive.

Every proud, feral instinct you possess is going to learn exactly how to yield to me.

I’m going to teach you how to crave my touch, Alpha, until the very word ‘submission’ doesn’t sound like a punishment to you anymore.”

Kristen felt a sudden, violent surge of heat rush straight to his face—a volatile emotion suspended halfway between a blinding, murderous rage and an entirely unwanted, terrifying jolt of primal arousal.

His sensitive ears twitched, turning a distinct pink against his dark hair.

Driven by pure adrenaline, he lunged forward across the seat, his hands clenching into fists as he bared his elongated fangs right in Julian’s face.

“I will kill you in your sleep before that ever happens,” Kristen promised, his gravelly voice vibrating with raw power that made the leather seats tremble.

Julian didn’t flinch.

He didn’t even shift his relaxed posture against the cushion.

He merely tilted his head slightly, his gaze dropping to Kristen’s lips before rising back to meet his furious golden eyes.

He reached out with an agonizing slowness, his ice-cold index finger boldly tracing the sharp line of Kristen’s jaw, completely unfazed by the low, dangerous growl rumbling deep in the wolf’s chest.

“Vampires don’t sleep the way you do, little mutt,” Julian whispered sensually, his breath smelling faintly of sweet mint and sharp ozone.

“But I look forward to watching you try.

It’s going to make our first night together so much more…

entertaining.”

Kristen violently slapped Julian’s hand away from his face, the sound of the impact sharp in the dark cabin.

He retreated back into his corner of the seat, pressing himself against the door.

He turned his head back to the window, his chest heaving rapidly as he tried to regain control over his racing pulse.

The city lights outside blurred into long streaks of brilliant neon crimson and midnight blue, casting dramatic, shifting shadows across his flushed face.

He was locked in a moving cage with a monster who knew exactly how to dismantle his pride, piece by piece, and he had no way out.

The sedan suddenly slowed down, the tires crunching loudly over a perfectly manicured gravel driveway.

Kristen looked ahead through the front windshield, blinking against the sudden darkness.

The modern skyscrapers had faded into the background, replaced by a massive, towering iron gate that opened up to a sprawling, dark estate hidden securely behind high concrete walls.

They had finally arrived at the Vance Clan mansion.
