The Broken Mark

Level 999: The Glitch King

Seraphina's hand was still on his arm when the broken chain in Jace's pocket started to hum.

Not warm. Not gold anymore. The links had gone the color of old iron since he'd torn them off, and now they buzzed against his leg like something remembering a shape it used to hold. He almost didn't mention it. Almost let it sit there as one more small, private wrongness in a night that had already handed him more of those than he knew what to do with, on top of everything the night had already cost him to say no to. But it was getting louder, and loud things in this room had a habit of turning into panels whether he mentioned them or not.

"Your inventory item is active," Caleb said, already turning. "That should not be possible outside a crafting bench."

"Tell it that."

The hum climbed into the floor. Beneath the throne, the marble that had never once looked like anything but marble began to separate along a seam none of them had put there, gold light bleeding up through the crack like the Spire itself had a pulse it was trying not to show.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD — STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY

Floor Integrity: Compromised. Localized collapse imminent.

"Move, now," Theodore said, and for once there was nothing careful in it at all.

Seraphina pulled Jace back half a step before the section under the throne gave way entirely, folding downward into a stairwell that had no business existing beneath a room this old. Cold air rose out of it, dry and faintly metallic, air that had been sealed somewhere long before anyone in the room had been born.

"You're not going near that edge," Seraphina said, before he'd even shifted his weight toward it. "Not on zero Stamina."

"I wasn't going to fall in."

"You were going to lean until falling in became optional."

"That's a very specific accusation."

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"It's an accurate one."

EXPLORATION QUEST — UNINDEXED SUBSTRUCTURE

Objective: Identify the sealed vault.

Status: ACTIVE.

Failure Condition: Sunchain indexes it first.

Caleb read that line twice. Jace watched him do it.

"That's not a glitch face," Jace said. "That's your actual face."

"Sunchain's registry lists every recognized structure attached to this Spire," Caleb said. "There is no unrecorded level beneath it."

"There's one right now."

"The records are exhaustive."

"The records are wrong, then. Those aren't the same sentence, but you keep saying the first one like it quietly disproves the second."

Elijah stood closest to the opening, and he hadn't said anything, but his hand had found his wrist the way it always did, and this time nobody told him to stop. "It feels old," he said quietly, to no one. "Older than what they took from me. I don't know how I know that. I just do."

Theodore crouched at the stairwell's edge, one palm flat against the broken stone, and for a long moment he didn't look like a Collector cataloguing a threat. He looked like a man listening for something he half expected to answer.

"This predates the Spire," he said. "The Spire was built on top of it. Not beside it. On it."

"Predates it by how much?"

"I don't know." He said it plainly, without the practiced calm underneath it this time. "Sunchain doesn't build on unknowns. We verify, then we build. Someone verified this, once, and then made sure nobody remembered doing it." His hand didn't leave the stone. "I was recovered in a room that felt like this. I've spent years assuming that was Sunchain architecture. I'm no longer certain it was."

Nobody said anything for a moment. It was the second confession he'd made tonight, and this one hadn't cost him a projection to admit. Seraphina looked at him like she was recalculating something, and for once it wasn't hostile.

COLLECTOR FACTION REACTION — ALERT LEVEL RAISED

Status: Sunchain Command notified. Response team dispatched. ETA: 11 minutes.

"Eleven minutes," Seraphina said. "That's not a lot of time to decide anything."

"It's enough to look," Jace said.

"Jace—"

"I didn't say climb down. I said look."

He leaned toward the opening instead of into it, and the cold air moved past his face carrying something underneath the metal smell, something almost electrical, like standing too close to a machine that had been running quietly for longer than anyone alive had been counting.

Breach Sight came up without him calling it, drawn there by the shape of the dark below rather than any gold thread worth following.

STRUCTURE ANALYSIS — PARTIAL

Composition: Non-Sunchain. Non-Spire. Foundational.

Age Estimate: Exceeds available records.

Pattern Note: Structure extends laterally beyond visible foundation. Estimated span: citywide.

"Citywide," Jace repeated. "This isn't under the throne room. This is under Manhattan."

"That is not possible," Caleb said, though his voice had lost the certainty that usually made statements like that mean something.

"It's not part of the building," Jace said. "The building is part of it. Every street, every subway line, every foundation anyone ever poured — somebody laid all of it over something that was already here, and never once wrote down what it was."

Nobody argued with that, which was its own kind of confirmation.

Caleb straightened, his usual certainty visibly reassembling itself around something that refused to fit inside it. "This will be reported as an anomaly."

"It's not an anomaly," Theodore said, quiet, still crouched at the edge. "It's a foundation. We just never asked what Manhattan was standing on."

"Then ask it now," Jace said. "Before your response team gets here and decides the answer for you."

Theodore looked at him for a long moment, and whatever calculation was happening behind that look, it wasn't the one he usually ran.

SUBSTRUCTURE CLASSIFICATION: SEALED VAULT.

Sunchain Registry Match: NONE.

For the first time since they arrived, all three Collectors looked surprised.
