Chapter 15 / 49

Under the Throne

Level 999: The Glitch King

The surprise lasted less than a full second.

Caleb recovered first, already reaching for a protocol built for situations that were not supposed to exist. Elijah settled somewhere between fear and recognition. Theodore’s face never quite finished closing again, and he seemed to know it.

“Eleven minutes,” Theodore said, checking something only he could see. “That is how long we have before Command reaches the Spire.”

“Then we have eleven minutes,” Jace said.

“You have zero Stamina and a Corruption Load that has not moved off eighty-nine percent.”

“I didn’t ask for a status report.”

“You needed one anyway.”

Seraphina’s grip tightened around his arm. “He’s right. You cannot go down there like this.”

“I can’t wait either. The second Sunchain indexes the vault, it stops being a mystery and becomes an asset. Theirs.”

“Then let them have it. Let something be their problem instead of yours.”

“It opened under my throne.”

“That is not a reason. That is stubbornness wearing a reason’s coat.”

“Maybe. It is still mine to wear.”

She shifted her hand, less restraint now than bracing. “If you fall, there is no chain to steady you. Just me, and I cannot carry both of us back up before Command arrives.”

“Then we don’t come back up before they arrive.”

“Jace—”

“I know what I’m asking.”

Neither backed down. She was not wrong to be afraid, and he was not wrong to be out of time. There was no version of the next eleven minutes where both truths received equal respect. Someone would lose an argument that had nothing to do with who was right.

LOWER-SPIRE FLOOR MAP — PARTIAL

Known Access: Broken Stairwell.

Possible Access: Service Tunnel. Old Transit Junction.

Unexplored Area: 93%.

The map tried to resolve the lower level and failed in sections, leaving whole corridors black where a normal interface would have filled them with estimated walls. One route ran beneath the nearest subway line, vanished under a field of unreadable symbols, then reappeared three blocks east without explaining how it crossed the distance. Jace felt the shape of it more than he understood it: the Spire was not extending downward into the city. It had found an older network and attached itself like a building remembering where its roots belonged.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

Theodore watched the missing sections with his jaw held too carefully. “Sunchain maps uncertainty as restricted data,” he said. “It does not usually admit uncertainty exists.”

“Healthy habit.”

“No,” Theodore said. “Useful habit.”

“Send Command a partial report,” Theodore told Caleb. “Structural anomaly. Investigation active.”

“That omits the vault classification.”

“It reports what we have verified.”

“We verified a sealed vault.”

“We have not verified who sealed it.”

Caleb went still, deciding whether loyalty to procedure or loyalty to Theodore mattered more inside that sentence. “Noted,” he said, and changed the report.

It was the second time Theodore had spent something on Jace’s behalf without calling it that. Jace suspected he had not fully noticed either payment.

Caleb studied the map. “Subway construction predates Earth’s System exposure. Any overlap with the substructure is coincidental.”

SUBWAY-TO-SYSTEM OVERLAY — GENERATED

Match Confidence: 97%.

Major transit junctions align with buried conduit architecture citywide.

Caleb looked at the number like a bill he could not argue down.

“That is not coincidental,” Elijah said. “Ninety-seven percent is a plan somebody forgot to hide.”

“The tunnels could have followed geological weaknesses,” Caleb said.

The overlay rotated. Subway lines settled over the older pattern in bright layers, not merely crossing the conduits but repeating their curves, junctions, and dead ends. Even abandoned stations sat above dormant nodes.

COUNTER-HYPOTHESIS TESTED: GEOLOGICAL ALIGNMENT.

Confidence: 4%.

Caleb’s mouth tightened.

“Manhattan wasn’t built over something by accident,” Jace said. “It was built to match it. Whoever laid the first streets knew where the old lines ran, even if nobody remembered knowing.”

DISCOVERY XP — BURIED TRANSIT ARCHITECTURE

Overflow Experience: 51,280 → 52,000.

Quest Objective Updated: Reach the sealed vault before Sunchain indexing.

A smaller timer opened beneath the reward.

SUNCHAIN RESPONSE ETA: 06:14.

“Six minutes,” Theodore said, softer now. The number had begun meaning something different to him. He looked toward the stairwell. “I was recovered somewhere like this. I told you that already, and I still do not know what to do with having said it aloud.”

“Come with us.”

“I cannot. Not yet. If I disappear before Command acknowledges my report, Caleb’s omission becomes disobedience instead of procedure.”

Caleb did not correct him.

“Then stay,” Jace said. “Just don’t close the way behind us.”

“I was not going to.”

Seraphina looked into the dark. “I could call my house. Contest the claim and buy real time.”

“Could you?”

“Not without questions I am not prepared to answer. Not without owing people who would treat the debt as permission.” She had already run the numbers and hated every result. “So no.”

One more door closed before anyone had to force it shut.

She exhaled and released the argument like a rope she knew she had lost. “Fine. But you hold onto me the entire way.”

“I wasn’t planning on letting go.”

They crossed the broken marble together.

The first step dropped farther than Jace expected, and his right leg nearly folded. Seraphina caught his weight against her shoulder before the fall became a decision.

ASSISTED DESCENT ACTIVE

Movement Efficiency: 31%.

Fall Risk: Severe.

He kept one hand on her and the other against the wall. Below them, the stairwell merged with brick service passages, rusted transit supports, and black conduits older than either. Subway vibration moved through one wall. Something deeper answered through the other.

Behind them, Theodore watched until the dark swallowed Jace and Seraphina from view. Then he turned back toward Caleb’s incomplete report and the six minutes he had purchased, carrying a secret that had begun to feel less like Sunchain property every time he chose not to file it.
