Chapter 10: Spinal Tap and Corporate Warfare

Leveling Up Through Affection: The Villain's Return

The safehouse was located beneath a luxury high-rise in the center of the wealthy commercial district. It was a subterranean fortress masked by layers of acoustic dampening runes and spatial distortion fields. Silas carried them down a private elevator that opened directly into a state-of-the-art medical and training facility.

The air smelled sharply of antiseptic and ozone.

Liam carried Liora into the primary trauma room and laid her gently face-down on the central examination table.

She was completely unconscious now, her breathing ragged and shallow. The purple discoloration was rapidly spreading up her neck, indicating that the necrotic mana was dangerously close to reaching her brain.

Vespera stood by the doorway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She had dismissed Silas to guard the perimeter, choosing to remain in the room to supervise the procedure.

She claimed it was for security purposes, but Liam knew she was desperate to witness exactly how an E-Rank intended to perform a mythical magical surgery.

"I need access to her spine," Liam stated, keeping his voice perfectly clinical as he stood beside the examination table.

Vespera stepped forward and efficiently unzipped the oversized jacket Liora was wearing, pulling it off her shoulders.

Beneath the jacket, Liora wore a simple, light-colored athletic top. Vespera produced a small, sterile utility blade from one of the medical trays and cleanly sliced the fabric straight down the middle of the back, parting it to expose the girl’s pale skin.

Liam took a deep, centering breath.

He pushed away all extraneous thoughts, ignoring the soft, vulnerable curve of Liora’s shoulders and the intense, calculating S-Rank stare boring into the back of his head.

He gathered the cold, abyssal energy resting near his heart and channeled it into his fingertips. His hands became coated in a swirling, ink-black mist that absorbed the bright lights of the trauma room.

"Commencing extraction," Liam murmured.

He placed the tips of his index and middle fingers precisely at the base of Liora’s neck, right at the top of her cervical spine. The moment his freezing shadows touched her burning skin, Liora let out a soft, shuddering gasp in her sleep.

Her back arched slightly, instinctively seeking the cooling relief his touch provided.

[Initiating Dual Cultivation: Meridian Alignment Phase.]

[Focus your intent. Draw the Yin corruption outward. Absorb, purify, and consume.]

Liam slowly dragged his fingertips down the center of her spine. He did not rush the movement. He pressed firmly, feeling the delicate ridges of her vertebrae beneath her soft skin.

With every inch he moved downward, his shadows acted like a magnetic vacuum, aggressively pulling the bruised purple necrotic mana out of her deep tissues.

The physical sensation was intoxicating. As he siphoned the corrupted starlight, his own shadows devoured it, breaking it down into pure, refined Yin energy that rushed straight into his own core. It was a perfect, symbiotic exchange.

He was curing her lethal affliction, and in return, her vast S-Rank potential was feeding his starved mana reserves.

Liora shifted on the table, a flushed, healthy pink color rapidly returning to her skin as the corruption faded.

A quiet moan escaped her lips, vibrating in the silent room. The sound was undeniably sensual, a pure vocalization of profound physical relief and deep, magical intimacy.

Standing a few feet away, Vespera felt a sudden, inexplicable heat rise in her own cheeks.

She had activated her ’Frost Sight’ to monitor the magical exchange, expecting to see a violent clash of incompatible energies. Instead, she witnessed something breathtakingly beautiful.

The dark, terrifying shadows belonging to the boy were wrapping gently around the girl’s brilliant starlight, dancing together in a flawless, spiraling loop of give and take.

It was not a medical procedure. It was a profound merging of souls. Vespera felt an foreign pang of something almost like jealousy twist in her chest, a sudden, irrational desire to know what that absolute, freezing darkness would feel like against her own skin.

She firmly pushed the thought away, clenching her jaw.

Liam reached the base of Liora’s spine, pausing just above the curve of her lower back. He let his shadows flare one final time, violently severing the necrotic root that had tied itself to her core.

The last traces of purple discoloration vanished from her skin .

He lifted his hands, stepping back from the table as the black mist faded from his fingertips. He was breathing heavily, a fine sheen of sweat coating his forehead.

[Ding!]

[Core Alignment Successful. Target is completely stabilized and currently experiencing extremely pleasant dreams.]

[Interaction Log: Massive intimacy threshold crossed. Affection +15 (now 109). Bond Level increased to ’Romantic’.]

[Reward Dispensed: Siphoned Yin energy has cracked the Third Seal Fragment.

Skill Unlocked: ’Shadow Step’ (Allows instantaneous short-range teleportation between areas of darkness. Current range: 50 meters).]

Liam felt a violent rush of power surge through his legs. The ability to teleport through shadows was a cornerstone of his past-life combat style. Having it back, even in a limited capacity, fundamentally changed his survival odds.

He pulled the ruined halves of Liora’s shirt together and draped a sterile thermal blanket over her sleeping form. Only then did he turn to face Vespera.

The Ice Queen was looking at him with an expression he had never seen on her face before. It was a mixture of deep respect, intense suspicion, and a strange, lingering vulnerability.

"You just performed a miracle," Vespera said quietly. "You saved her life, and you somehow grew stronger in the process. I felt your mana density spike the moment you finished."

"A fair exchange of resources," Liam replied, moving to the sink to wash the residual sweat from his hands.

Vespera walked over to a steel counter and poured two glasses of clear, icy water from a chilled pitcher. She handed one to Liam, a rare gesture of hospitality that signaled a massive shift in their dynamic.

"I received an encrypted message from the Association headquarters while you were operating," Vespera said, taking a slow sip from her glass. "Director Vance has made his move. He filed a formal grievance claiming you assaulted his nephew and kidnapped a priority asset. He is demanding a tribunal and a warrant for your arrest."

Liam drank the water in a single gulp. The cold liquid felt incredible against his parched throat. "How much time do we have?"

"I used my father’s clearance codes to stall the warrant," she explained, setting her glass down. "But it will only buy you four days. There is only one way to permanently get the Vanguard Guild off your back and secure your legal right to act as Liora’s handler."

Liam leaned against the counter, crossing his arms. "The Novice Gauntlet."

Vespera nodded, a sharp, predatory smile finally gracing her lips.

"Exactly. The annual Association tournament for newly Awakened rookies begins this Friday. Julian Vance is heavily favored to win it using his guild’s expensive gear and specialized training. If you enter the Gauntlet as an independent, you gain temporary diplomatic immunity under Association law. They cannot arrest an active competitor."

"And if I dismantle their golden boy on live television in front of every major Guild Master in the country?" Liam asked, perfectly understanding her strategy.

"Then you prove that you are a vastly superior asset," Vespera stated, her eyes gleaming with cold anticipation. "The Association values power above all else. If you destroy Julian Vance and win the Gauntlet, Director Vance will be humiliated. He will lose the political capital required to hunt you, and you will secure your freedom."

Liam looked past the Ice Queen, his gaze settling on the peaceful, sleeping face of the girl he had just saved. He thought about the arrogant smirk on Julian’s face back at the Awakening Center.

"Register me," Liam said flatly. "I am going to tear the Silver Vanguard apart."
