Chapter 11: Awakening Bonds

Leveling Up Through Affection: The Villain's Return

The sterile white lights of the subterranean medical bay hummed a frequency that Liora found strangely soothing as she finally opened her eyes.

The crushing, suffocating agony that had dominated her chest for the past several hours was gone. In its place, her newly awakened starlight core pulsed with a steady warmth.

However, she quickly realized her magic did not feel completely like her own anymore. Interwoven with the brilliant, searing silver of her Astral energy was a subtle, comforting thread of absolute, freezing darkness.

She pushed herself up into a seated position on the examination table, pulling the thermal blanket tightly around her shoulders to cover the ruined state of her athletic top. The moment she moved, a tall figure stepped out of the ambient shadows lingering in the corner of the room.

Liam approached the table with his hands tucked casually into his jacket pockets.

He looked exhausted, though his posture remained flawlessly straight and his dark eyes were as alert as ever. Liora felt an immediate, magnetic pull toward him, a profound physical and magical resonance that made her heart race and her skin tingle.

It was the undeniable aftereffect of him manually realigning her entire meridian network using his bare hands.

"Your core has fully stabilized," Liam noted quietly, his gaze sweeping over her flushed face to verify her physical condition. "The necrotic pathways have been purged. You should not experience another overload unless you attempt to forcefully channel your starlight without a proper magical conduit."

Liora looked up at him, her pale blue eyes filled with a potent mixture of deep gratitude and overwhelming affection.

She remembered the feeling of his hands moving down her spine, the intoxicating blend of his freezing shadows devouring the burning corruption inside her body. It was the most intimate thing she had ever experienced, and it had left her feeling inextricably bound to the boy she had once considered just a quiet, isolated neighbor.

"You saved me again," Liora whispered softly. She reached out from beneath the blanket, her small fingers wrapping securely around his wrist. The contact instantly sent a pleasant jolt of shared mana spiraling up Liam’s arm. "I do not know how I will ever repay you for everything you have done today."

"Survival is its own reward," Liam replied simply, allowing her to hold his wrist without pulling away. "And we are going to need you at your absolute best if we plan to survive the Vanguard Guild’s retaliation."

Before Liora could ask what he meant by that statement, the heavy reinforced door of the medical bay slid open with a sharp pneumatic hiss.

Vespera Nocturne strode into the room, having discarded her pristine white trench coat for a sleek, form-fitting black combat uniform lined with silver runic threading. She looked every inch the lethal S-Rank prodigy she was widely known to be, her icy blue eyes immediately zeroing in on the lingering physical contact between Liam and Liora.

"I am glad to see our priority asset is awake and functional," Vespera stated, her voice carrying its usual aristocratic chill, though her gaze lingered on Liam just a fraction longer than necessary.

"I have officially registered Liam as an independent competitor in the Novice Gauntlet under the sponsorship of my personal estate. Director Vance will receive the notification within the hour, effectively neutralizing his ability to issue a legal arrest warrant."

Liora looked completely bewildered by the sudden influx of information. "The Novice Gauntlet? But Liam is only an E-Rank Awakener. Julian Vance and the other elite guild trainees have been preparing for that tournament for years. Is it not incredibly dangerous?"

"It is practically a suicide mission on paper," Vespera agreed, folding her arms across her chest. "But Liam has already proven that standard power scaling metrics do not apply to him. However, surviving an encounter with a mindless Ash-Stalker is vastly different from fighting a trained human opponent in a sanctioned arena."

Vespera turned her piercing attention fully onto Liam.

"You possess a high degree of lethal efficiency, but you are still operating with a severely limited mana pool. I need to know exactly how your combat mechanics function against an intelligent adversary before I risk my family’s political reputation on your success. We are going to the training room."

Liam released a slow breath, knowing there was no way to avoid the impending assessment.

The Ice Queen respected nothing but pure competence, and words would never be enough to secure her full cooperation. He gently detached his wrist from Liora’s grip, offering her a reassuring nod before following Vespera out of the medical bay.

The primary training floor was massive, easily the size of a professional basketball court, completely encased in thick runic plating designed to absorb high-yield magical impacts.

Silas, the imposing A-Rank retainer, stood perfectly still by the observation console, while Liora took a seat behind the reinforced glass barrier to watch the proceedings safely.

Liam stepped onto the center of the reinforced mat, rolling his shoulders to loosen the lingering tension from his earlier battles. He felt a familiar, comforting chill settle over his mind as he fully transitioned into his combat mindset.

Suddenly, a glowing golden window materialized directly in front of his face.

[Pre-Combat Analysis Complete.]

[Warning: Your current E-Rank mana capacity is severely depleted from the meridian realignment procedure. Engaging an S-Rank opponent in your current state will result in a humiliating defeat lasting approximately twelve seconds.]

[System Mandate: You must activate the ’Yin Siphon’ passive skill to top off your reserves prior to engagement. The Consort Liora Selene possesses a massive surplus of unrefined starlight.]

[Task: Approach the observation deck. Establish highly visible skin contact with the Consort and draw out her excess mana. Maintain eye contact to ensure maximum emotional resonance. Do not be shy.]

Liam stared at the floating text, aggressively suppressing the urge to sigh out loud.

He turned his back on Vespera, who was currently drawing her elegant silver rapier, and walked directly toward the transparent barrier separating the combat floor from the observation deck. He signaled for Silas to lower the glass partition.

The retainer glanced at Vespera, who gave a curt nod of permission, and the thick glass slid smoothly down into the floor.

Liora looked up at him with wide, curious eyes as he stopped right in front of her chair.

"Is something wrong, Liam? Did you forget your equipment?"

"I am lacking a crucial resource," Liam stated calmly. He reached out with both hands, gently cupping the sides of Liora’s face.

Her breath hitched audibly, a vibrant flush instantly blooming across her cheeks and down her neck.

She looked up into his deep, crimson-flecked eyes, paralyzed by the sudden, overwhelming proximity. Liam did not hesitate. He intentionally activated his shadow core, letting his dark mana seep into his palms to establish a direct connection with the humming starlight radiating just beneath her skin.

He drew the energy backward, siphoning a potent stream of pure Yin mana out of her body and straight into his own depleted reserves.

The sensation was electric, causing Liora to let out a soft, involuntary gasp that echoed clearly across the quiet training facility.

The visible aura of silver and black magic swirled beautifully around their connected forms, a blatant display of their profound physical and magical intimacy.

Standing on the combat mat, Vespera watched the entire exchange with an unreadable expression. Her grip on the hilt of her rapier tightened imperceptibly.

She recognized exactly what he was doing, having witnessed the same impossible mana transference during the medical procedure, but seeing him initiate such a deeply tender gesture so casually sparked an irritating, unfamiliar frustration deep within her chest.

"I am adequately supplied," Liam announced, finally stepping back and dropping his hands from Liora’s burning face. He turned to face the Ice Queen, his dark eyes flaring with fresh, supercharged energy. "You may begin whenever you are ready."

Vespera raised her weapon, the air around her immediately plunging well below freezing.

"Try not to die, Liam Cross."
