The man called Xiao Feng frowned. “She just came to take a look and left. The boss won’t find out.”
“Don’t you know there are cameras in this room?”
“If you’re not afraid of causing trouble, don’t drag us down with you. We’re all counting on this job to make a living!”
Xiao Feng turned to the man who had been shouting the loudest. “Old Li, last month when you hurt your back and couldn’t work but refused to take time off, who the hell helped you with your job?”
“Brother Yu has lived with us in this room for so long. Which one of you hasn’t asked him for help?”
“Now that he’s gone, his sister just wanted to come and take a look, to have something to remember him by. What’s the big deal? Even if the boss finds out, what can he do?”
“All of you, how can you be so heartless!”
Xiao Feng’s outburst left everyone speechless.
In truth, not everyone was ungrateful—only one or two had been leading the complaints.
After his outburst, he looked at Yu Miaomiao. “It’s fine. Keep looking!”
Yu Miaomiao had already retrieved the card and shook her head apologetically. “I’ve seen enough. I’ll leave now. I don’t want to cause you any trouble.”
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not afraid!”
As soon as he finished speaking, the man guarding the door and another man in a slightly different work uniform barged in aggressively.
“Who let this woman in, huh?!”
“You guys in this room are getting pretty bold, aren’t you? Treating the boss’s words like nothing? Don’t any of you want to keep your jobs?!”
“I came in on my own,” Yu Miaomiao said, not wanting to implicate anyone. “I just wanted to see where my brother lived. Is that against the law? If it is, call the police and arrest me right now.”
They didn’t call the police, but they didn’t believe her either.
“Someone must have brought her in. Admit it now, or all of you can get out!”
“I brought her in,” Xiao Feng stepped forward on his own.
“This girl just came in to take a look. She didn’t do anything,” another man tried to plead for Xiao Feng.
“So it was you.”
The one who had been acting arrogantly was the site supervisor. He glared at Xiao Feng with a mocking expression.
“What, were you friends with Yu Lixin?”
“We all work together. Who isn’t friends with whom?” Xiao Feng shot back defiantly.
“Do you know how much trouble Yu Lixin caused the boss? How much money he made the boss lose?!”
“It’s wrong for the construction site not to install safety nets in the first place. So what if he had to pay compensation? Brother Yu lost his life! How about we give you the money, and you die in his place?!”
“You—” The supervisor was so angry he rolled his eyes. “You’ve got guts, kid. Let me make this clear—you won’t be eating this rice anymore. Believe me, not a single construction site in Bincheng will dare hire you from now on! Get out of here now!”
Xiao Feng, having nothing left to lose, sneered. “You think I care about this lousy job? Pay me my wages, and I’ll leave right away!”
“You still want your wages? How can you be so shameless!” The supervisor turned to the others in the room. “If he doesn’t leave tonight, none of you will get your wages for this month!”
Yu Miaomiao thought her own boss was shameless enough, but it seemed there was always someone worse.
Did these people think they were emperors? How dare they ignore labor laws so blatantly!
“Let’s go for now. I’ll help you get your wages later,” she whispered, tugging at Xiao Feng’s sleeve.
The contractor had a notorious reputation, and this was his territory. She was afraid Xiao Feng would suffer.
Xiao Feng clenched his fists. If it weren’t for Brother Yu’s sister being here, afraid of accidentally hurting the young girl in a fight, he would have punched the supervisor.
“A few lousy bucks, I can do without them!” He swallowed his anger and left the construction site with Yu Miaomiao.
