This was the 31st day Ling Jiujiu had been conscious, and he hadn’t eaten for seven days.

Since waking up in the morning, Ling Jiujiu had felt extremely weak.

His stomach kept rumbling nonstop, and his originally somewhat agile body had become unusually stiff.

His tongue was so stiff it felt knotted, making it difficult to even speak clearly.

Even taking a few steps made his bones creak like a rusty iron bed, as if they might fall apart at any moment.

Seven days was probably his limit for fasting. If he didn’t eat soon, his body would likely develop serious problems.

He really didn’t want to turn into one of those brainless, clumsy zombies.

Ling Jiujiu stretched his stiff body, got up, and went to the kitchen, taking out a small bowl of wriggling little insects from a jar.

Then, carrying his fishing rod and a metal bucket, he headed out.

Fishing was a time-consuming task that required patience. If Ling Jiujiu still had the energy to run, he wouldn’t have wanted to come to the river to fish.

After sitting idly by the river for two hours, Ling Jiujiu hung his head, drowsy and nodding off.

Just then, the fishing rod suddenly twitched twice, and he immediately perked up.

But after seeing what was on the hook clearly, he deflated again.

Ling Jiujiu took the shoe off the hook, tossed it aside, cast the hook back into the water, and continued dozing off.

He hadn’t been asleep for long when the fishing rod moved again.

Ling Jiujiu hurriedly looked up. This time, what was on the hook wasn’t a shoe, but it definitely wasn’t a fish either.

He took the thing off the hook and examined it for a long time.

If he remembered correctly, this black, hard object was…

A gun! The kind humans specifically used to blow zombies’ heads off!

Now Ling Jiujiu was completely awake.

This river wasn’t short, and things would occasionally drift down from upstream.

But most of them were clothes blown into the river by the wind or garbage. A handgun was a first.

Before he could figure out what was going on, another massive object drifted down the river, snagging on his hook.

After seeing the massive object clearly, Ling Jiujiu instinctively took several steps back.

He… he had fished up a person!

Ling Jiujiu pulled the man out of the river, brushed aside the hair plastered to his face, and studied him carefully for a moment.

The man was exceptionally good-looking, the best-looking human Ling Jiujiu had ever seen.

But the man’s complexion didn’t look good—too pale, with colorless lips.

Ling Jiujiu reached out a finger and poked the man’s cheek. The touch was icy cold, with no warmth at all.

Normal human skin was warm, lips were pink, and complexions were yellowish.

This man… was he perhaps dead?

Humans who died were highly likely to turn into zombies. This man might become one of his own kind.

Living alone as a zombie was indeed a bit too boring. Ling Jiujiu really wanted to find a zombie he could communicate with to chat and relieve his boredom.

Zombies from outside were all very stupid and couldn’t communicate at all.

If he raised one from scratch, it might be better.

After all, he was the only zombie with a brain!

If the man wasn’t dead, he could also ask this human for food.

He really didn’t have the energy to go find fresh meat to eat anymore.

Having made up his mind, Ling Jiujiu slowly reached out toward the man…

An hour later.

Accompanied by the gurgling sound of flowing water, Lu Chen was awakened by a strong, dull pain in his leg.

Not long ago, their 001 squad had gone out to search for supplies and unfortunately encountered a zombie horde.

Everyone in the squad had either been bitten by zombies or become food for them.

He himself had been scratched by a zombie, and his fate was unknown.

He looked down at his thigh, where there were several dark brown claw marks.

The blood had been washed away by the river water, but the swelling around the claw marks was very noticeable.

People bitten or scratched by zombies had only two outcomes.

Either they awakened a supernatural ability and became an awakened, or they underwent zombification and turned into a zombie.

But right now, compared to the bite wound, he was more concerned about…

Where were his clothes?

He was clearly wearing clothes when he fell into the water. It was understandable if his jacket had been washed away, but his pants had been fastened with a belt.

Lu Chen immediately became alert and looked around.

Sure enough, on the ground near him, there was a trail of footprints leading into the woods.

Someone had taken advantage of his unconscious state to strip off his clothes.

In the apocalypse, rescuing people casually was inadvisable because you never knew if the person you saved was still human.

That person had some conscience, at least. They hadn’t done anything to him and had left him his underwear.

Lu Chen got up, planning to find a place to stay first.

Just then, a rustling sound came from the nearby woods.

Driven by vigilance, Lu Chen instinctively reached for the gun at his waist, only to find it gone.

His gun was missing too.

Well, if his clothes had been stolen, of course they wouldn’t have left him his gun.

Lu Chen looked toward the source of the sound.

From behind the nearest large tree, a furry head peeked out halfway.

Lu Chen narrowed his eyes slightly, watching the young man sneakily peeking out from behind the tree.

The young man’s face was completely bloodless, his exposed eyes had a reddish tint to the pupils, and his entire body was hidden behind the large tree, with only half of his small head showing. He looked like a pitiful little thing, afraid of people.

A zombie?!

No, the way the young man looked at him clearly still held human consciousness.

This was a zombie who retained consciousness and hadn’t fully undergone zombification yet.

Lu Chen cautiously took step after step toward him, wanting to see the little zombie’s condition clearly.

Before he could get close, the little zombie became agitated.

“D-don’t move!”

Ling Jiujiu was frightened by his actions and hurriedly raised the gun in his hand, aiming it at Lu Chen.

With the gun pointed at him, Lu Chen paused.

But from his current position, he could just see the young man’s appearance hidden behind the tree.

The young man had a slender build and was wearing the clothes stripped from him.

However, Lu Chen’s physique was more than twice as robust as the young man’s, so the clothes hung on him like a child wearing an adult’s clothes.

The young man’s voice was slightly hoarse, whether from zombification or thirst.

Even though he was the one holding the gun, why did he look like he was facing a great enemy instead?

Lu Chen realized something, glanced at the gun with its safety clearly still on, and raised an eyebrow slightly.

He tentatively took another step forward.

“Y-you, don’t come any closer!”

Ling Jiujiu jumped in fright, trembling as he held the gun toward him.

His grip on the gun was wrong, and his body was shaking so badly—clearly, he had never handled a gun before.

Now Lu Chen had no more reservations and strode toward the young man.

“If you come any closer, I’ll biubiu you! I really will biubiu you!”

Ling Jiujiu panicked. How could this man not be afraid of such a terrifying thing as a gun?!

Watching the man get closer and closer, Ling Jiujiu, in his panic, aimed the gun at his leg and pulled the trigger.

“Biu! Biu!”

Ling Jiujiu: (Expression of extreme shock and distress)

Why didn’t it biu out?!

I’m done for!

I’m going to get my head blown off!

Lu Chen quickly walked up to the young man, snatched the gun from his hand with a swift motion, and released the safety.

Before he could aim the gun at the young man, he felt a weight on his leg.

He looked down and saw the young man clinging to his leg like a koala, looking up at him with a pitiful expression:

“Please, d-don’t shoot my head.”

Ling Jiujiu was terrified.

Dragging the man ashore had almost exhausted all his strength.

His body was too tired. He had only taken the man’s clothes as leverage to get him to find some food.

He had taken the gun to protect himself because he was too afraid the man would hurt him. He never intended to harm the man.

Besides, if he hadn’t fished the man out of the river, the man might have drowned.

In a way, he had saved the man.

And yet, as soon as the man woke up, he wanted to blow his head off.

The more Ling Jiujiu thought about it, the more wronged he felt.

His nose twitched, the corners of his eyes slightly reddened, glistening with tears.

Seeing the young man like this, Lu Chen’s expression changed slightly: “Don’t act cute.”

Ling Jiujiu tilted his head: “?”

Even as he said that, Lu Chen slowly re-engaged the gun’s safety.

Seeing the little zombie still clinging to his thigh, Lu Chen tapped the young man’s head with the gun:

“Let go, or else—”

Before he could finish, Ling Jiujiu had already covered his head with both hands, trembling as he curled into a ball, presenting his rear toward him.

Lu Chen: …

Their first meeting

Ling Jiujiu: I fished up a person!

Lu Chen: I was stripped naked by a zombie!
