Chapter 6: Cutting the Loom

Lord of Destiny

*Lord of Destiny — Chapter 6: Cutting the Loom*

Kael looked at Coren. Then at Lyra.

Then at the thousands of threads above him.

“Both of you are wrong,” he said. His voice didn’t shake.

Coren frowned. “What?”

“If the Weaver is dying, and holding it kills us, then we don’t hold it,” Kael said. “We cut it.”

Lyra went pale. “Kael, no. That’s not a thread. That’s the Loom. If you cut the Loom, every fate unravels at once.”

“Good,” Kael said. The black mark burned. “Then people get to choose for themselves. No Lords. No Weaver. No one deciding who pays.”

Coren laughed, but it was sharp. “You’d kill the world to set it free.”

“I’d give it a chance,” Kael said.

He reached up. The black thread from his wrist stretched, thinner than before but sharper. It didn’t go for a single thread this time. It went for the knot at the center of the ceiling. The place where every thread met.

The Loom.

The Spire shrieked.

Every thread in the hall went rigid. Red ones bled light. Gold ones snapped. The silver Eye between them shattered into dust.

“Stop him!” Lyra shouted, but Coren was already moving.

Coren grabbed Kael’s arm. The black marks on both of them flared and connected, a bridge of ink and light.

Suddenly Kael saw it. Not Karthos. Everything.

Every city. Every life. Every choice that had ever been pulled or cut.

And behind it all, something vast and tired. The Weaver. Not a god. Not a person. Just an old thing trying to keep the fabric from tearing.

_Please_, it whispered. Not in words. In exhaustion. _It hurts._

Kael hesitated. The thread in his hand hovered a breath from the knot.

“Do it,” Coren said in his ear. “End it.”

“Don’t,” Lyra said. “If you cut it, there’s no going back.”

Kael thought of the baker’s daughter. The guard on the wall. The blacksmith’s son. Ten thousand people he just saved by pulling one thread.

And he thought of the next Lord. And the next. Burned out, one by one, until the mark reached their hearts.

His hand came down.

The thread cut.

Silence.

For one heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then the Loom unraveled.

Threads fell like rain. Gold, silver, red, black. They hit the floor and went dull. The Spire’s windows cracked. The mountain outside groaned.

Outside Karthos, the sky didn’t turn light. It turned clear. No Weaver. No bells. No one watching.

Kael fell forward. The mark on his chest stopped moving. It was still there, but it wasn’t growing. It was just a scar now.

Coren stared at his hands. The black marks were fading. “It’s... gone.”

Lyra dropped to her knees and laughed, or sobbed. “You idiot. You actually did it.”

Kael couldn’t speak. His head felt empty. Light.

For the first time since midnight, no one was deciding his fate.

He had.

*End of Book One: Lord of Destiny*

Epilogue hook: _Three days later, in a village far from Karthos, a child was born with a single black thread wrapped around her wrist._
