Chapter 7: The Thread in the Cradle*

Lord of Destiny

Three years after the Cut.

Karthos didn’t fall.

It just got messy.

Without the Weaver, no one knew what was going to happen tomorrow. Crops failed, then flourished. Wars started, then stopped for no reason. Prophets went mad because their visions just... stopped.

Kael Veyr lived in the mountains now. No title. No mark growing. Just ink on his hands and a scar over his heart that ached when it rained.

Lyra ran the new Council. Coren disappeared the night of the Cut. No one knew where.

Kael thought it was over.

Until the letter came.

It was delivered by a kid who didn’t knock. Just left it on the door and ran.

Inside: one piece of parchment. And a single black thread, tied in a knot.

_They’re being born.

Come to the village of Orrin.

Before they decide for us again.

- L_

Kael knew the handwriting.

He saddled his horse that night.

Orrin was three days away. A nothing village on the edge of the Ash Plains.

When he got there, the whole village was standing in the square. Silent. Staring at one house.

In the doorway stood a woman, maybe 20. In her arms, a baby.

And around the baby’s wrist was a black thread. Not a mark. A real thread. Glowing faintly.

The baby looked at Kael. And smiled.

Behind him, another baby cried from a house down the street. Then another. And another.

Lyra stepped out of the crowd. Older. Tired. “There are twelve of them,” she said quietly. “Born in the last month. All with threads. All in different villages.”

Kael’s scar burned. “The Weaver’s dead. How—”

“We didn’t kill it,” Lyra said. “We just cut it loose. And now it’s growing back. Through them.”

The baby in the woman’s arms reached out. The black thread floated off her wrist and drifted toward Kael. It stopped an inch from his scar and pulsed.

Like it recognized him.

“We call them the Children of the Cut,” Lyra said. “And Kael... they’re not being chosen. They’re choosing.”

The thread touched Kael’s chest.

Every voice in Karthos, in Orrin, in every city hit him at once. Not futures. Not fates.

Wants.

A thousand people, all asking for something different.

The baby giggled.
