Vоlumе 1 Сhарter 10: Hеlрing Оut
In thе mоrning, Shu Miao аrrivеd at the undеrground pаrking lоt tеn minutеs еаrlier thаn thе аgrеed time.
Shе thought that if Meng Yuсhuаn arrivеd еаrlу аnd had tо wаit fоr her, she wоuldn’t dаre tо oversteр her bоunds again.
When shе reаchеd thе parking lоt, Meng Yuchuаn hаdn’t аrrivеd yet. Shе tооk оut her phоne аnd sent a mеssage tо Pei Rаn.
“Teaсhеr Рei, I’m аbоut to head tо the ехecutiоn ground. Wish me luсk 【fist】.”
Pеi Rаn rеpliеd instantly: “Studеnt Shu, you’rе ехaggerating. The other pаrtу is a top-tier hаndsоme guy, not sоmе greasy, bald, fat-faced creep. You should be secretly delighted 【wicked smile】.”
Shu Miao slightly furrowed her brows and was about to reply when she heard the sound of a car horn.
Looking up, she saw the familiar black Hongqi sedan.
Secretary Xiang was driving, and Meng Yuchuan was sitting in the back seat.
Shu Miao immediately put her phone in her bag and walked over with hurried steps.
She walked to the passenger side, opened the door, and was about to get in when she noticed a stack of documents on the seat.
For a moment, she felt awkward, unsure whether to get in or not, and could only stand there.
Secretary Xiang kindly reminded her: “Comrade Xiao Shu, these documents are all sorted, and there are quite a few. How about you sit in the back?”
Shu Miao pursed her lips and nodded apologetically: “Alright.”
She walked around the back of the car to the rear seat, opened the door, and got in.
Meng Yuchuan sat beside her, resting with his eyes closed, as if he didn’t care at all whether she got in or not.
Afraid of the awkwardness, Shu Miao placed her bag on her lap and took the initiative to greet him: “Good morning, County Magistrate Meng.”
Meng Yuchuan slowly opened his eyes, turned to look at her, his dark and deep eyes shimmering with a hazy glow.
He curled his lips into a smile: “Morning.”
His voice was low and gentle, and Shu Miao felt a jolt of electricity run through her body, her heart trembling involuntarily.
Meng Yuchuan continued to gaze directly into her eyes, his gaze gradually growing more intense.
Shu Miao slightly averted her gaze, gave him a gentle smile, then turned her head and lowered her eyes.
Meng Yuchuan watched her for a while longer, the curve of his smile becoming even more pronounced.
The car drove out of the parking lot, and Shu Miao kept her head bowed and eyes lowered the entire way, sitting with an extremely proper and elegant posture.
After about half an hour, the car came to a stop.
Secretary Xiang got out and opened the door for Meng Yuchuan, while Shu Miao opened her own door and got out, standing behind Meng Yuchuan.
Secretary Xiang took out the documents from the passenger seat, and Shu Miao stepped forward proactively: “Secretary Xiang, let me help you carry those?”
Secretary Xiang glanced at Meng Yuchuan, whose face showed no expression.
Just as he was hesitating, the weight in his hands lightened—Shu Miao had already taken most of the documents.
Turning around, he saw Shu Miao smiling: “Let me help you carry some.”
Seeing this, Secretary Xiang couldn’t say anything more and thanked her with a smile.
He then secretly glanced at his leader’s expression—thankfully, he didn’t seem angry.
No one else understood why Meng Yuchuan had asked Shu Miao to come along today, but Secretary Xiang knew perfectly well.
This wasn’t about having her come to work—it was clearly…
But he knew better than to say it out loud. All he had to do was make himself scarce at the right time and not interfere with their alone time.
During the event, Shu Miao sat beside Meng Yuchuan the entire time, listening to the host’s impassioned speech on stage. It was nothing but clichés, and she felt like she was about to fall asleep.
The event lasted until around four in the afternoon before it ended, and the three of them prepared to leave.Just as they stepped out of the main entrance downstairs, Secretary Xiang glanced at Meng Yuchuan. “County Magistrate, I still need to rush to get the materials. What about the car?”
Before he could finish speaking, he stood respectfully in front of Meng Yuchuan, awaiting his instructions.
Meng Yuchuan directly unlocked the car. “You go ahead first. I’ll drive the car back myself.”
Secretary Xiang nodded slightly. “Alright, then I’ll head over first.”
Meng Yuchuan nodded.
Shu Miao widened her eyes, watching Secretary Xiang’s retreating figure as he strode away, her heart sinking into a basin of cold water.
With Secretary Xiang gone, wouldn’t it just be her and Meng Yuchuan alone again?
Would she have to let him drive her back again?
Meng Yuchuan noticed Shu Miao standing frozen in place, her head lowered as she stared at her own feet, her small hands hanging by her sides clutching the hem of her clothes, looking utterly uneasy. He found it somewhat amusing.
He walked over to the passenger side and opened the car door for her, speaking slowly. “Comrade Xiao Shu, get in. I’ll take you back.”
Shu Miao looked up and saw Meng Yuchuan holding the car door open for her, standing there like a gentleman inviting her to get in, a faint smile on his handsome, fair face.
Instantly, she froze like a wooden chicken, her jaw nearly dropping to the ground, her pupils slightly dilated, completely forgetting to react.
Meng Yuchuan stood straight beside the car, carefully observing the stunned Shu Miao for a moment.
He raised an eyebrow slightly, a faint curve appearing at the corner of his mouth. “Comrade Xiao Shu?”
Shu Miao snapped back to reality and realized the situation—Meng Yuchuan was still waiting for her.
She immediately wished she could give herself a hard knock on the head. Why did she always end up looking so foolish in front of Meng Yuchuan?
Right now, she represented the entire Broadcasting and Television Center. Every word and action had to be flawless.
If she offended Meng Yuchuan, Liu Kangming would surely tear her to pieces.
She hurried forward. “County Magistrate Meng, you’re too kind. Actually, I can go back on my own. There’s no need to trouble you.”
But Meng Yuchuan insisted. “It’s fine. I don’t have much to do today, so I’m not in a hurry. Get in.”
Shu Miao was about to speak again, but Meng Yuchuan beat her to it. “There are a lot of people coming and going. Get in first.”
With that one sentence, he successfully silenced Shu Miao. His words had hit the nail on the head.
The people coming and going were all from various units. It really wouldn’t look good for her and Meng Yuchuan to be seen arguing here.
After a moment’s thought, she gritted her teeth. “Then I’ll trouble you, County Magistrate Meng.”
The smile on Meng Yuchuan’s face deepened, his tone carrying a hint of delight. “No trouble at all.”
Shu Miao nodded at him and slipped into the passenger seat, staying close to the car body.
Meng Yuchuan smiled and closed the door for her, then walked to the driver’s seat, got in, started the car, and drove away.
As the car entered the main road, Shu Miao noticed the direction was wrong. She thought Meng Yuchuan might have forgotten the way to her home.
Hesitantly, she glanced at Meng Yuchuan and reminded him softly, “County Magistrate Meng, this isn’t the way to my home.”
Meng Yuchuan kept his eyes on the road ahead. “Mm, I know.”
Now Shu Miao was confused. If he knew, why was he taking the wrong route?
Did he still have business at another unit? Was he taking her along to help?
…
As Shu Miao imagined countless possibilities in her mind, Meng Yuchuan directly interrupted her speculations.
“I’ll take you to eat first, then drive you back.”
Shu Miao felt as if she had been struck by lightning, her entire body petrified. “Huh?”
Meng Yuchuan turned his head to glance at her, his eyes carrying a trace of imperceptible fondness. “It’s mealtime. I’m taking you to eat.”One shocking revelation after another left Shu Miao so stunned that she began to ramble incoherently: “Take me to dinner? Eat… eat what? I’m not really hungry yet. Maybe you should just take me home instead?”
Meng Yuchuan paid no mind: “It’s still a bit of a drive. By the time we get there, you’ll probably be hungry.”
Shu Miao’s delicate brows furrowed slightly, a faint trace of worry creeping into her expression: “County Magistrate Meng, maybe we shouldn’t go after all. I… I’m afraid I’ll waste your time.”
Meng Yuchuan chuckled: “You’ve been busy all day. You can’t skip a meal.”
